Game Thread Spurs (1-0) @ Pelicans (0-1) (Fri 10/24/25) [7:00 PM CDT]

Victor 4 FTA
Zion 16 FTA

sure refs, sure.
That's what I was saying throughout the game. 2 or 3 of the fouls on Wemby were total weak sauce. Meanwhile, Zion is a bull in a China shop initiating tons of contact.

2 games, 2 times Wemby dealt with foul trouble. Unfortunately, he is not getting the typical superstar treatment.

Imagine if the refs treated Wemby like SGA. He would be the most unstoppable force to ever lace up a pair of sneakers.

Biggest Vassell hater out there, but he has had a really nice start to this season. Overpaid, sure. But if he is going to do this, he is extrmely useful on many fronts.

Spurs lose last night without Vassell.

I'll be beyond thrilled to be proven wrong about him.

I was surprised at Devin’s box score. His misses were real bad but he made plenty so 🤷‍♂️

In the first half, multiple times he passed up an open shot for a contested shot. I still don’t know why he does this all the f’n time. Catch. Shoot. That’s how it works man.

What year is Keldon in again? What about Castle? You can see why one has more leeway than the other.

And Vassell is empty calories, we all know that. He's pretty consistent at being inconsistent.
One is a 29th pick, one is a 4th pick rookie of the year. The players are the players and they have their roles. Just accept it that Keldon is a role player who provides energy off the bench. He wasn’t that good, isn’t that good and never will be that good.

Castle will be really really good, and the standards should be higher for him because of it. But instead this place do the opposite.

I love shitty, ugly wins early in the season. Everyone's grumpy and knows they have to improve. Meanwhile you've proven you can gut these things out. No one's happy but you get the Dub.

The whole team was doing that. They were passing out of good shots for worse shots instead of passing out of good shots for great shots.

I got zero complaints - because;

A) pelicans are going to compete every night and they are way under the radar and can be a pita to any team on any given night...

B) wemby's opening game performance reverberated thru the entire nba and these spurs were bound for a slight letdown and their heads were swollen due to the praise and proclamations of all the "experts" calling wemby the new standard and the spurs a problem for the league yadda yadda

C) No one will remember this as anything but a -W-

D) Having nights where unexpected role players help eke out a win while others struggle is the mark of a versatile team and as soon as champagnie or kj or barnes have a great game - spurs fans will expect them to have that type of game every night...but that is not who they are tbh
*spurs have only two legit all stars - wemby and fox - and every other player plays a role and when they shine - it is a bonus*

I like the roster, trades are not necessary right now and it is a slow work in progress....

It’s gonna be such a grind this year. Pels supposed to be bad but they hit on 2 first round picks and then they have the most unstoppable rim runner of his generation and a couple of dead eyes in Murphy and Poole. Fears is gonna be an all star at some point IMO.

Utah’s a tough out, apparently. Charlotte is possibly good. Philly is reborn. Wizards are at least trying and somewhat organized.

Brooklyn and Dallas looking like the only gimmes right now across the whole league. And Dallas is temporary.

I think we’re going to have a huge log jam across both conferences with surprises in the top 2 for both.

The lack of 3-point shooting showed yesterday. Castle won't have another 10 TOs performance also. When Fox comes back, that gives us a floor general who can control the game and avoid all these costly TOs.

Rebounding is a lot better than I thought it would be. My only concern is 3-point shooting at this point and probably what will limit the Spurs to go the Finals but there is no question that they are a playoff team.

The biggest needs for this squad are better three point shooting and better defense of three point shooters. My hunch is they can maybe get away with a deficiency in one of these areas, but both is a death sentence. Fortunately defending the three should be a relatively easy fix. If Barnes and Champ can get their heads out of their asses maybe the shooting can work its way up to somewhere close to adequate as well. I agree with the consensus that an ugly win is a good win at this stage... The players know they have a lot to work on but also the confidence that they can pull through as a team when it matters. Getting the W without Wemby on the floor is even better.

Lots to complain about but Vassell is not one of them. We easily lose this game without him and yet people are still pissing all over him. He played a good game, was decent defensively and shot because nobody else could.

Kornhub was phenomenal, and Harper will be something truly special. Castle played a pretty bad game but turned it up in OT. Wemby was ok (then I saw the stat line and was amazed that is a meh game from him). Sochan didn’t even play but was blamed for the spacing. Fox didn’t play but was credited for running a good offence. You just have to love this place.

Funny thing is if Keldon played exactly like castle did today, which would have been a phenomenal game for him, he’d be ragged on to no end. The double standard of some of these people through haterade glasses is really a sight to behold.
The fact that 29 pts, 11 rebs and 9blks is regarded as a meh game already is showing not only our expectations of him but also of what he can do. I still can’t believe he’s a spur

My only issue is the FT shooting. So, if they are able to win games when they stink it up at the line, even close nailbiters, then it will make it so much easier for them when the FTs start falling at a much better rate.

Something worth mentioning, the Pels record last year has no relevance to their team this year. When Zion/TM3/Herb are healthy they are going to be a pain in the ass to play. Weird shit happens in the first month of a season too, all teams are playing hard trying to scrape out wins. Beating 2 teams in their home openers by any means necessary without suffering any injuries is a great start to the season.

Charles Barkley famously said "The bad teams don't know they're bad yet".

It wasn't a big beautiful win...but it was a WIN! The team and coaches will learn as they continue on their road to a possible playoff situation/finals. Each game they will continue to meld and gel with one another. I liked how the team came together and got a win in OT after the NO Pelicans managed to foul out Wemby. I like what I am seeing so far.

A big reason why we won is rebounding.Adding kornet is a great addition so far.If we can shoot better,We could be
be a really good team this team.
Kornet was responsible for so many second and third chance opportunities for the Spurs. He does all the little things that often go unnoticed. What a great pickup for the Spurs!

The Spurs clearly outplayed them when I watched the replay this morning, but several bad calls, a few Spurs mistakes, and a lot of luck kept the Pelicans in it.

Zion:16 FTA
Wemby: 4 FTA

Zion was initiating a lot of the contact and coming away with free throws that he didn’t deserve.

I didn't rewatch it, but that is what it felt like to me when I was watching the first time.

Finally caught up with the game, worst possible travel for work timing.
Watched the Mavs game on the phone and couldn't catch this one.

What separates good teams from average ones is winning even when they're not playing well.
And that's just what we did against a team that's not to be underestimated.

And it wasn't even a huge carry by Wemby. He did his thing, but our late run and OT were obviously without him.
I'm a known friendship crew hater, but maybe, just maybe they're not too far gone.
Everyone is showing a lot of positive energy, Mitch and the staff got to them.

No need for me to go in detail, you guys covered everything already.
Let's just hope Fox can be on his usual level asap, he'll significantly increase both the floor and the ceiling of this team.

Good times ahead, the atmosphere for tomorrow's home opener should be great.
