Player Sochan's Extension Watch

With CB around....I am okay if other team snatched Sochan away
You're "okay" with it?

Mate Spur would have to add 2RP to get rid of Sochan...

He's unusable for so many reasons even with a low salary he would be pointless because places are limited and so many better prospects are available.

It costs nothing to wait for an improbable 180 tho, let's see if Sochan shuts our mouths...

It would be nice to know whether Spurs made a reasonable offer but he wanted more money or Spurs didn't make a contract offer at all.

Right now, with his lack of shooting, I have a really hard time seeing being successful here. It wouldn't surprised me if he ends out of the rotation with Champagnie taking his minutes.

Spurs have this season $39.5M in expiring contracts with Barnes + Olynyk + Sochan. If they are willing to add a player with a high salary after the Fox's extension, they can offer immediate salary relief to other teams in a trade.

Win / Win
If he plays great, Spurs have option to extend him or he becomes trade sweetener.
If he sucks, he gets traded for a bag of chips or plays out contract.

The time has arrived, you are either adding to the Wemby Championship pursuit or you are not.

I have this lasting image of Sohan playing in the FBC against the Knicks last season. He was working the post, but just getting absolutely clobbered by bigger players. I remember thinking “there’s no way this dude can sustain that kind of physicality over the next few years”. Not sure how he fits on this team. Maybe as a 3 and D player but he’s gotta work on the three.

What is the FBC?

How fast Sochan has fallen....2 years ago he was still deemed as a promising rookie comparable with Draymond Green's BBIQ (and high offensive potential) and a versatile defensive pest.

Agree with that. Would be lovely to know but we most likely will never be privileged to that information. For us fans, the lack of shooting and scoring, the low IQ, the running around on D with no purpose... there's no fit for him on this team...

This is a team with championship aspirations in the very near future and expensive randoms with limited IQ and skills shouldn't be on the payroll.

It's a big year for MATFO in this regard. You have Victor the MVP DPOY candidate, Fox the All Star, Castle the ROY, Harper the 2nd pick who projects to be better than Castle. Who do you keep and why? Who do you trade and why? Who do you pay and why? Who do you forget about and why? Sochan seems to be one of the guys you'd just not extend and forget about.

It's a big year for multiple players who wanna get paid

The only thing separating us from OKC and title contention is our lack of quality role players.

Wemby= SGA
Fox= Jalen
Castle= Chet

But we don’t have a Dort. We don’t have a Hartenstein and we don’t have a Caruso. I hope we have a Wallace in Harper. Those 4 players are what take OKC to a championship team.

To me, Sochan will never be on that level. And neither will Vassell or KJ.

Lil General catching strays! Give our mans a break, he's only like 4 feet tall!
No hate towards Lil General, but the guy couldn't shoot. fast as hell, great handles, manages the court well, but guy made 27 3 pointers in his 16 years in the league, that is 1,054 games, and 12 of those were made during the shortened 3 point line era. He made 1, ONE, 3 pter in 90 games spanning 10 playoffs. ONE. I still blame him for the Admiral being so underrated in his career. My fear for Wemby is that he will repeat what the Admiral went through in his prime, where the team just couldn't put a good enough team around him (that can shoot), leading to continuously disappointing post seasons.

Back to topic, Sochan and the Spurs not reaching an extension could be a good sign. On one hand, the Spurs are no longer handing out bad contracts, on the other Sochan is not so desperate to take on any contract because he may have some confidence in his improvements, betting on himself. Can't wait.

Awkward scenes in the hallways at the Rock at La Cantera today (you have to imagine this in the style of The Office)

Jeremy: Hey Brian, we wuz trying to call you yesterday mate

Brian Wright: Oh hey Johnny... yeah, I think my phone was broken or something... you know Amazon Web Services had a global outage...

Jeremy: It's Jeremy... but actually I was here and I saw you in your office all day and I could see your phone light up when I called...

Brian: Oh... uh... sorry James... I was in meetings all day man, not ignoring your calls or anything...

Jeremy: Jeremy... it's... Jeremy. But I could see you wuz playing Minesweeper on your computer Mate...

Brian: On, no Jimmy... that was just Pop's Zoom background... funny that El Jefe is... anyway Jason, gotta run... HEY CARTER, WAIT UP!!!

This is what I’m hoping. That the spurs simply don’t want to give a bad contract and would rather just wait it out. If Jeremy earns it this year, pay him. If not, offer him what he’s worth and if he walks, he walks.

If Jeremy comes out and averages 20 a game this year and shoots 40% from 3 on 5 attempts per game, it still doesn’t mean the Spurs made the wrong decision in not extending. You can’t give out contracts ‘hoping’ players magically learn to shoot or develop a skill from a 3 out of 10 to a 7 out of 10 level.

Frost Bank Center, our home court.
Thanks. I hadn't seen is written and FBC much and couldn't figure out what it stood for. How long has it been the Frost Bank Center now?
Frost Bank Center. I guess no one really uses FBC.

BTW, I meant maybe he can have a career as a 3&D small forward.
Thanks. I didn't make the connection on what FBC was. The rest of what you said was crystal clear. I'd love to have Sochan as a 3&D type player, but unfortunately, he's nowhere near close the the "three" part :(. I hope he has a good season, and I hope he can improve his shooting (a lot easier said than done).

One thing that doesn’t get mentioned as much is how important the wings are in today’s nba.
OKC is loaded with them, Boston was, Cleveland, Atlanta, Orlando, Dallas to a degree, rockets for sure. The only “good” teams that don’t have good wings are Denver (and it could be argued they do have good wings), who have the best offensive player ever in Jokic, and bucks, who aren’t really that good even with Giannis.

The Spurs wings are weak, not just offensively but particularly on defence. We will see how castle can evolve this year and step up the D, and whether Harper can be that on defence. As much as I like Keldon he’s just totally lost on defence, Vassell is shockingly bad and Barnes is just too old. Sochan at times may be the only competent wing defender on the squad and we need multiple of these guys, so even if Carter stepped up and become a reasonable rotation player, the team will still be missing perimeter defence.

The contracts for Braun, sharpe, Daniels, NAW and camara showed that this is still an offence league. So sochan would have to improve drastically on offence to really get anything more than the MLE next year.

Sochan is a perfectly fine player, the price is the issue. In a few years we’ll be scouring free agent wings willing to take part/all of MLE. Problem is he wants more than that now.

Plus the Spurs will still have options. If he’s that good this year, then you happily use RFA to your advantage.

Champagnie might play a key role in this decission. At the price of 3M per season, for two more years, he covers more needs and is a better fit, for less than half the salary.
I wouldn't even offer Sochan the QO, that would be 9.6 million for 2026-27, when they already got Champagnie for 3 million.
2027 Bryant should be ready to take those minutes anyway (hopefully play an even bigger role) and to get him to this point in his development, they need to play him some minutes.

so, in that scenario Sochan ist the odd man out, no matter if he costs 1 million or 10. considering they have Champagnie, Barnes and Carter, an immediate trade of Sochan would make sense.

Wemby effect. There will be more and better FA knocking on Spurs doors. Why commit to a player who cannot shoot?? If he makes an improbable 180 improvement, chances are he’ll sign with the Spurs also if the money is right. Still there would be plenty of better options
