Player Sochan's Extension Watch

So how much did Sochan get extended for again? Was it 25 million a year like I’ve been told it was going to be all offseason? I mean that’s a bit of an overpay but Sochans shot is coming along (I’ve watched his 30 second work out clips) and the potential is just off the charts. Dude is the best wing defender in the league or at worst top 5 and he’s gotten so much smarter on offense. He now knows how to cut!

Wright took a bit of a gamble but look at Sochan’s contemporaries and that deal is right in line with them. Overall Sochan is going to have suitors across the league so locking him up at that price was the prudent thing to do…:st-bobo:

Champagnie might play a key role in this decission. At the price of 3M per season, for two more years, he covers more needs and is a better fit, for less than half the salary.
I wouldn't even offer Sochan the QO, that would be 9.6 million for 2026-27, when they already got Champagnie for 3 million.
2027 Bryant should be ready to take those minutes anyway (hopefully play an even bigger role) and to get him to this point in his development, they need to play him some minutes.

so, in that scenario Sochan ist the odd man out, no matter if he costs 1 million or 10. considering they have Champagnie, Barnes and Carter, an immediate trade of Sochan would make sense.
Champ can’t guard LeBron or any of the other big wings of the league. Neither can Castle.

Spurs need to find a way to package Sochan in a trade to get an upgrade at PF
Vassell, Johnson, Sochan + future draft picks should all be considered in trades.

Spurs have a solid foundation now and just one more move(move away from relying on Sochan) along with some developmental experience from the young guys to already be good enough to challenge for a title.

one of the reasons OKC is so loaded is that they are re-signing their bench rotation level guys to multiyear deals which end up looking like bargains a year later, much like what we did with champagnie

Isaiah Joe signed for 4/48
Aaron Wiggins signed for 5/45
Ajay Mitchell who looked great yesterday was just signed this offseason for 3/8.7
Jaylin Williams signed for 3/24
Kenrich Williams signed for 4/27

for people asking what a reasonable deal for sochan would have looked like, or still asking themselves is keldon johnson is overpaid... these are the types of contracts OKC is signing young bench guys to. and when they eventually have to move on from somebody like Dort or Hartenstein, they dont have to scramble to draft a replacement or hope to find somebody for the TPMLE. (they also have Sorber to help replace Hart but losing him for his rookie year obviously raises some questions as to whether they could actually rely on him next year)

if we have young guys who look like decent bench/rotation guys who can spot start (read: Sochan)... these are the types of deals that the best team in the league are signing those players to, and these are not the types of deals i'd expect sochan to agree to on a rookie extension.

All true and fair, problem is Sochan in his mind is a former top 10 pick and 3 year starter, he doesn't see himself as one of those guys even if that's where he belongs. Happens with super young players on tanking teams usually, players are given more playing time than they deserve and build a distorted image of themselves that makes it hard for them to come to terms with reality.

In his shoes I would have tried to guarantee myself as much as possible now and worry about padding my bank account later, really 40 million is more than any sensible person can spend in a lifetime, the rest is just an ego boost. That way he'd be set for life with plenty of time to inflate his bank account in his third contract by age 26/27, but sometimes people see this as a video game rather than life.

i mean thats fine that he was drafted there, but if we are signing him to the 26-27 season and beyond, we have to look at what we expect his role to be, and at this point barring some serious changes to his game he's a bench/rotation guy and thats the going rate

with lakers perimeter defense looking like complete ass and Jimmy Gilgeous-Alexander destroying them, maybe we trade Sochan for LaRavia and change

Welcome rascal, glad you finally made it over just in time to celebrate that Shaedon Sharpe extension!

I realize it is a pointless thought exercise at this juncture, but watching KD with the Rockets last night I couldn't help but wonder what having that automatic bucket of a player would have looked like for the Spurs the next 3 years. I still think some combo of Friendship Crew/Barnes and draft capital could've gotten it done and it would've been a healthy move particularly for our guards. All reporting indicated KD had SA as his primary choice but the Spurs just didn't seem to reciprocate. KD at the 4 (and losing some friendship crew) would've just smoothed out so much fit clunkiness, oh well.

Probably 2 of Vassell / Keldon / Barnes, + Sochan + 14 + future first, going by what they got from Houston (Jalen Green + Dillon Brooks + #10).

this is why wemby needs to simplify his offense somewhat and have some consistent, go-to move the way LMA had his turnaround, and how Durant can cross over to either side and just rise up. doesnt have to be what he does every possession, but would be his version of a bailout shot. right now wemby's offense still looks like he's basically improvising every time he touches the ball

Be still my beating heart... may our love affair with Jake never end

There were some suns reporters who said while the spurs were KD's preferred destination ( wanted to play with Wemby and Fox ) the suns didn't really negotiate in good faith. They were demanding the no 2 pick and/or castle in the trade and wouldn't deal without them. No way you give up either of those things for a player at the end of their careers so it was a non starter that went nowhere.

thats what it would have taken to beat the rockets offer which included the #10 pick and a solid starting level player in dillon brooks. i dont think the spurs could have beaten that offer without giving too much, so it probably couldnt have gone much differently

That makes it tough for the other 4 guys on offense to fit around a dude when they have no idea what he is going to do lol. Seeing Wemby in preseason utilize more pull up mid range and post up into 1 step to the basket attacks makes me hopeful that he realizes in basketball less can be more in terms of effective offense.

Yea I can understand PHX insisting on 2 or Castle being included and if that was the case I would've excused myself from those negotiations (which BWright apparently wisely did). KD could've possibly made it more uncomfortable but it seemed a few teams were okay with trading some real assets even with the threat of just a 1 year rental.

Green has more value in a vacuum than Vassell (very similar advanced stats, Green has better availability). Brooks has actually been a neutral or slightly negative player most of his career but he had some high profile clashes with Lebron which adds to his mystique for some reason lol. I do think Sochan intrigued some teams (not any good ones) but with his latest string of injuries he is going to have to actually play and play well to gain back percieved value. Losing 14 would've sucked once we saw Carter Bryant was available.

Gambo said Spurs didn't even make a concrete offer

He’s gonna F this whole thing up when he’s back. that paint looked wide open last night. I don’t know why Kidd didn’t scheme more to sag off of castle but other coaches will. And they definitely will sag off Jeremy.

Maybe Dallas had some hubris about their front court’s abilities in the paint and didn’t pull in help. But I dont expect Vic to have that much room to operate in going forward.

He'll mechanically push Wemby to the perimeter and we don't want that, we saw yesterday how much damage he can do when he doesn't spend most of his time beyond the 3pt line...

Last season already we could all notice how much the team played more fluidly with a better passing game when Sochan wasn't here.

“But what about his defense” the sniffers will say after we just let up like 80 points with no clear deficiencies.

Johnson said the lack of an extension does not change the coaching staff’s view of how the 22-year-old Sochan fits in the short term.
Sochan missed Wednesday’s opener while recovering from a calf strain.
“Jeremy’s been an integral part of our team for a few years now,” Johnson said. “We view him as someone we are going to look towards as a defensive tone-setter and a guy that can help us in so many different ways.”
