Game Thread Playoffs Round 2, Game 1: Spurs vs Timberwolves (0-0) (Mon 05/04/2026) [8:30 CDT]

Spurs I felt tried to reinvent the wheel by not providing enough size next to Victor. Luke is still a solid backup but this may not be the series for him. During the championship years I remember the Spurs always had two centers, and backup PF to play along side Duncan. '99 it was Robinson-Perdue-Kersey-Rose, '03 Robinson-Willis-Rose-Ferry, '05 Nazr-Rasho-Horry, '07 Oberto-Francisco-Horry-Bonner, '14 Splitter-Baynes-Diaw-Bonner-Ayres. This year they only have Kornet but no other bigs whether it's PF or Center to play alongside Victor.

The game may have changed but the other teams remaining in the playoffs have more size than the Spurs from what I have seen.
Yep many of us have been clamoring for more front court size and athleticism and here we are getting exploited by a long 3 and two legitimate sized PFs- exactly what we lack - all of whom are listed at 6’9” - exactly the size/height players we lack. Combine that with 0-12 from 3 for Fox and Wemby and 0-14 from 3 counting KJ off the bench and it spells an L for the Spurs. I think we can shoot better but MN has the D to give us worse looks from outside and clog the middle. While exploiting size mismatches in the frontcourt.

MN looks like the best definition of a bad matchup for us. At least we know what to prioritize with whatever of our 4 draft picks we actually keep. Front court help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finch was whining about Wemby's blocks being goal tends. There was only one that was for sure a goaltend. The rest are legit.
I agree. I see through what Finch is trying to do in lobbying the refs to call bs fouls on Victor when he goes up for a block or to call goal tends.

Not for teams like the Thunder. Ag hammy falling off the bone and Hali’s game 7 Achilles are 99% why they have the ring that’s given them the even more of a golden whistle (no idea what that team/city has done to deserve it in the first place) and a high chance of repeating this year

Feel like spurs are ALWAYS getting fucked with

Why was Keldon trying to trash talk Edwards? LOL after he took him to the hoop on back to back plays on top of it..

LOL I love this chart. I know this is copium to some extent, but getting to the second round is an overachievement for this team given preseason expectations. Even as recently as our slump in January I was thinking a first round exit was 50/50. I still think we beat Minny in 7, but win or lose, this season has been a tremendous step forward for the franchise. I try to keep that thought in mind when I feel tempted to jump off the proverbial cliff.

Idk, losing to a hobbled Wolves is inexcusable.

To a healthy one though, is fine by me. But Ant is like 70%, and theyre missing their best shooter…

Teams that clog the middle while still playing good perimeter defense are a bad matchup for anyone. I think our current roster is particularly susceptible to such a team due to below par frontcourt outside of Wemby. Kornet as a backup center that still mostly has to play against Gobert exacerbates the same problem.

They may be hobbled, but they are still battle-tested. A loss to a great team full of absolute dawgs can be viewed as a learning experience and an opportunity for the front office to re-evaluate aspects of the roster, rather than an unmitigated disaster.

Now Denver and Boston... those franchises are in a precarious place, and I don't envy their fanbases right now.

I have no problems with Keldon talking back to Edwards since Edwards was talking shit from the beginning of the game. You gotta show some resistance towards Edwards. Being submissive to a guy like Edwards is not going to work. I rather go down swinging then be passive when dealing with him.

Teams with the combination of size depth and shooting are bad matchups for the Spurs, namely New York and Minnesota. The Spurs are structured to play one big, two wings and two guards. They need the shooting. Unless a young Robert Horry shows up somewhere, it is what it is.

To me the biggest problem was our cold shooting, especially from 3. BUT, can’t pretend that MN didn’t make those looks harder due to playing solid D. Which means we can’t just think we will be fine once we shoot at our normal % - much more needs to be adjusted than that.

We should have clearly signed Cisokko when he got waived.

He showed lot of promise in that final game. We need to stack 2-3 players like that… At this point we are asking too much of Wemby…

We don't.
Our defense was fine.

We couldn't get anything going on offense even with our strongest lineup on paper, how the hell would we score with someone like Cissoko on the floor?

We have a better version of Sidy on the roster tbh. Unfortunately, he was hurt last night. Hopefully CB can play Game 2, would be a nice player to have in this series.

Would love to see CB guard a hobbled Ant. He can handle that assignment.

Its crazy how CB went from being an unplayable rookie to an important playoff chess piece in the course of a single season. Never seen that rookie season arc before.

Kornet looking borderline unplayable is very concerning tbh. We already need to find a new backup C for next season

Big issue. Wemby played the last 16 min and he doesn't have the stamina.

In the crazy denver game, wemby played the whole 4th quarter too and missed key plays in the clutch

With out Gobert they dont have good rebounders.

We didn’t attacked that mis match until 2 mins into final Qtr. come on Mitch, its basic on what you need to do when their best Defender is not there…
