F#$K. Really didn't want them moving him until the offseason. Hopefully they don't until then.

Not a coincidence. Hawks know they're better without him at this point, and they desperately need a Center. Despite needing a PG, I doubt the Mavs want Trae due to his defensive limitations and the fact that his timeline doesn't matchup with Flagg's. But I wonder if they'd try to get a third team involved to redirect Trae elsewhere with AD coming in, or if they'd just do separate deals.

I don't think that they can get much out of Trae, everybody knows that he is an extremely bad defender and a bad shooter. Only teams that might be interested are teams looking for a big expiring contract next year, they won't send young prospects and high draft picks

I mean this stat is misleading. He wasn't very involved in those games. That roster just blows when JJ and NAW aren't going nuts.

Also true. It's def not all his fault. Hawks were reeling a bit before he came back. But I've watched the past couple Hawks games since he's returned and teams continue to attack him relentlessly when he's on the floor (and rightfully so). And his offense has dipped considerably this season so it no longer helps offset his horrible defense. Currently shooting 41% from the field and 31% from 3 this season. We know what Trae is at this point. He's clearly not a winning player. They should've sold high on him 2 season ago tbh. Now his return wont be nearly as high, but at least they'll have an infinitely better player (when healthy*) in AD coming in instead. The question will be how many draft picks they'll have to expend (and what protections, if any) to make this happen.

:st-lol: AD constantly being met with the reality that he's a center despite him hating it for whatever reason

guess it just comes down to ATL finding a 3rd team that has some interest in Trae, as Dallas seems to want no part of him back in any AD trade.

In hindsight, it is absolutely crazy the heist Trae Young pulled thanks to that conference finals run 4 years ago. The Hawks spent so much time and money (and churning coaches) trying to recapture that success, turns out it was entirely an outlier. It was just a case of a team getting hot at the perfect time against very flawed opponents.

I wonder if the Pacers are about to do something similar.

Pacers are about to get a top 5 pick so probably not

Gonna be hilarious when the Hawks trade for AD and he go does in the first quarter of his debut game with yet another injury
Exactly this! I hope the Hawks do trade for AD! Would just be better for us.

Other thoughts:
  • It is commonly just assumed that KP would be part of the deal (if Trae isn't) and that DAL would buy him out. I could definitely see the Spurs picking him up in the buyout market if this happens. KP already thought he was headed here this summer accordingly to him. Of course, this assumes he is over whatever this mysterious illness he keeps getting.
  • The talk of Risacher headed out and possibly rerouted is interesting to me. If we could somehow land him for cheap... I wouldn't hate it at all. Seems like a very long shot though. If DAL doesn't want him they should be able to reroute him for a positive return.

I have no clue why Dallas would buyout KP other than the fact that he was traded from there several years ago. He fits their roster pretty well. Obviously the illness question, but KP has been an elite player this year according to advanced stats (and a huge fact as of why Atlanta was several games above .500 a week and a half ago.)

I think his time there previously is a big part of it, but also I think part of the idea is that if KP is playing, the Mavs in a post-AD trade scenario wouldn't be looking to have an elite player on the team. They want to tank while they can to build around Flagg.

I'm not so sure, I don't think the ownership is looking to tank considering the horrible luka trade right after the finals. They only have control of this years pick then go on a drought so I don't think they'd risk making bad roster decisions like that.

Only having control of this year's pick is exactly the reason to bottom out this year (plus they'll have Kyrie returning next year).

KP can't stay healthy either, so I wouldn't call buying him out a bad roster decision at all. ATL can get to AD's salary (for trade purposes) with KP and Risacher. If they could do that, and get a couple of picks, I'd do that if I were them. It would also have the major benefit of getting out of Davis's remaining 2/120 and get them under the 1st apron next offseason.

This would be such a no-brainer move for DAL, in my opinion... so much so that it should be viewed as a horrible mistake by the Hawks if they do it, because AD will probably be hurt and ATL will not only commit themselves to his remaining $120MM but probably another terrible contract after that. IMO, AD is headed straight to Embiid levels of contract horror for whoever gives him his next deal.

Why wouldn't dallas just run KP and attempt to get value with his performance being so good this year?

Again, because this is the last chance DAL has to get a high draft pick. Why ruin that by running out KP for some meaningless wins?

That's assuming KP will even play again this season. He has some strange nervous system disorder that is a result of his ankle surgery over a year ago. Even if he gets bought out, he may not be able to pass a physical to sign with anyone else.

I get the tanking thing I just do not see the new GM and ownership signing off on it.

Or are you asking why doesn't DAL run him out to showcase him to flip later? He's an expiring.

They're 12th in the West right now, I'm not sure what there is to sign off on? The fan base knows where the team is right now. Get the pick this year, then make some moves to try to compete for the playoffs next year. They might try to move Klay this deadline as well.

Kyrie/Flagg/Risacher/PJ/Lively/Top 10 Pick would be a decent base to build around

KP would be our starting PF if he were healthy... but he's not... supposedly returning soon though.
Im half salivating at the thought. The other half of me is seeing how we might get killed at the 3 point line more with how slow that line up is going to be.
