the main reason the wizards did the Poole/McCollum deal is that CJs deal ran out a year earlier. now the wizards are projected to have over 100mil in cap space next offseason. they can afford to spend 50 of it on Trae, find another priority FA signing they can afford to overpay, and then rent out the rest of the space for picks

I think the CJ McCollum move is good for the Hawks, he’s a sieve defensively like Trae, but he’s a better off ball scorer/fit next to Jalen Johnson.

For the Wizards I kind of get it in that Trae could put more fans on seats, and it’s an upside swing and buy low opportunity to see if he can rediscover some of his old scoring/playmaking as the lead initiator, but Trae is still a floor raiser for a bad team and I don’t get why the Wizards would want to risk winning an extra 5-10 games and end up at 30 wins and pick 7-10 instead of 20 wins and a top 5 pick in a potentially franchise changing draft.

I’d be shipping CJ out for second round picks and expirings and let that scrub Bub Carrington start at PG the rest of the year and end up with a top 5 pick.

I think it’s a big value buy for WAS. They will play hardball on his extension too with their new FO crew. Makes a ton of sense to me the more I look at it.

As long as we're talking four way deals:

Pass. Hate to give up on CB so quickly.

Yaxel Lendenborg seems kind of small for a power-forward. Tankathon has him listed as 6-9.75, but he looks closer to 6-7 in his highlight videos. He's ancient (will be 24 when he suits up to start next season), and he's not playing good competition at the moment. But he's uber-productive on both ends. He seems to have really good defensive anticipation and hands, and he's plenty skilled for his position.

On paper, Yaxel seems like everything Sochan was supposed to be. If the Hawks pick falls out of the lottery and he's there in the late teens or early 20s, he could provide immediate depth at the team's biggest position of need. If the pick is much higher than that, the team will need to see some hidden upside to make the pick worth it. Derrick White is a good example of how there could be upside left even in super seniors. Maybe Lendenborg is the next coming, but we'll have to see how this year goes.

He measured 6'8.5" barefoot at the combine last year with a 7'4" wingspan and 9'0.5" standing reach, so I think in shoes he's probably 6'9.5-6'10". Also Michigan has had the #6 ranked SOS in the country based on Kenpom so I think his competition's been plenty good, it's just that Dusty May has a stacked team and Michigan's been blowing out ranked teams by 30 so he doesn't actually play much. I think it's fair to question how much of his production is a product of the system. His matchup against Duke's front line in the spring will be telling, as will going up against Purdue's massive frontline. I have some questions about his overall athleticism as he does not appear to be much of a vertical athlete, but I don't mind drafting an older prospect in the lottery if he checks basically all the boxes. He also started playing basketball very late so there is a possibility for a Siakam-like late development arc there.

Interesting that you bring up Derrick White though, my exact comp for him is actually forward Derrick White.

He measured 6'8.5 barefoot at the Combine last year before withdrawing his name from the Draft. So 6'9.75 with shoes sounds about right. He also has an elite 7'4 wingspan and a 9'0.5 standing reach which should help negate some of his height concerns. Size and length won't be an issue for him tbh. Spurs would be lucky to get him imo.

Damn, Hawks make the End of an Error official. Wonder if a trade has already been agreed-to behind the scenes, as the public announcement should drop ATL's leverage otherwise.

This is a real test of the Hawks GM's ability here. Robbing idiot FOs like the Pels is one thing, but extracting value out of a perceived negative asset is another level entirely. Kind of excited for this to play out lol

Also absolutely shout out to Brian Wright indeed, it's so good to have the PG situation resolved and not be involved in these "sweepstakes".

On a different note - was Trae exchanging half-court shots with Luka at the All Star Game the highest point of his career / perceived value? It really was looking like the Hawks got close to "equal value" with the Luka trade for a minute there.

Feels like it's been downhill for him ever since then. Imagine trading out of Luka Doncic for a bum and an extra pick :st-lol:

Cam Reddish was selected. lol

Sources: Wizards emerge as a legitimate trade destination for Hawks star Trae Young

More salary would have to be added by Washington to make the salary cap math work in a trade for Young — and it remains to be seen whether the Hawks would also have to send the Wizards draft capital as a measure to convince them to absorb Young's contract or if Washington would be making a direct play for Young — but the prospect of Atlanta trading its most popular player is only growing as the Feb. 5 trade deadline nears.

Wait, the Hawks would be salary dumping Trae to the Wizards??? :st-lmao:

Funniest fucking outcome possible lol, how do you fumble his value this bad

They fumbled it by letting him play these past few seasons....should have moved on two years ago really...
They either badly misread the market, or badly wanted to move on from the DJ debacle. The outcome is the same, though, no matter the motivation.

Exactly.... I think there's also a group think perspective that hurts teams like Atlanta who don't control their picks for a couple seasons. There's this 'we can't tank' thought process because that pick might go high for the team controlling it so we've got to stay competitive... its dumb because it puts the focus on making sure another team doesn't benefit from our (atl in this case) past mistakes instead of putting it on 'what can we do to improve our situation from here'.

They end up wasting two years or more when they could have acquired other assets to make their rebuild go faster once they controlled their picks again.

If the Spurs can get into the Young to Wizards trade by prying Justin Champagnie.. I think it will be a good addition. The Champagnie twin is a very good rebounder for size and a capable defender plus he shot well last season and following a bad start this season, he seems to have found his stroke. A better fit than the current version of Sochan for the Spurs.

Prying Justin away would be like some other team wanting Julian from us. He wouldn’t be a throw in. You would have to attach some specific assets to get him in return.

I suggested Justin Champagnie several times last season, when the Spurs were trying to add pieces and had more margin for error and time to allocate to developmental projects. With the team's improvement this season I now think they should aim higher, like someone who has a real path to playoff minutes, and at this point Justin Champagnie hasn't shown enough to make me confident he's that.

I might still take him if Washington wants to move him for cheap (say Biyombo and a mediocre 2nd rounder) since it's not inconceivable they'd prefer to use the roster spot on someone with more upside or another position, but that's probably as far as I'd go.

Julian has proven significantly more than Justin and should be way more valuable. I get that sometimes we try to avoid home team bias, but let's not overdo it.
