This guy looks like a BIG 6’5” player, kinda like Keldon. Looks like he could eventually be groomed to replace Devin or just add another versatile wing to our core. I like how strong he looks - seems he would be a seamless fit to everything we do. I’m looking higher on the board because of the recent ATL skid.

Super early but here are my faves in order:

1. Hannes
2. Tounde
3. Carr
4. Haugh
5. Aday

Left out on purpose:

-Quaintance - love his defense but there’s hardly a shot there and we’ve tried that already
-Karim, Yaxel - I’m getting that sense that their personalities won’t mesh well with our current core (i usually have a good feeling about this)

Oh man, I love Tounde the more I watch. If everybody could see past their obsession with getting a player above 6’5” they’d appreciate how ELITE of an addition to this team Tounde would be. Tounde could play 2, 3, 4 with how great his offense is and how big and quick he is on defense. My jaw is dropping.

Jayden Quaintance made his long-awaited season debut this week after recovering from an ACL tear last year. He was one of the top prospects coming out of HS 2 years ago and is still widely considered a top-10 pick in the upcoming draft. He's a 6'10.5 255 lb defensive-minded PF/C prospect with a developing offensive game. Great rebounder. Already has an NBA-ready body.

NBA comp: Bam Adebayo.

Absolute monster athlete

Realistically I'm not going to spend too much time on JQ because the Hawks would have to really shit the bed in order for the Spurs to get a chance to draft him and I don't see that happening. He's probably going to be undervalued this year because a lot of guys take a year after coming back from their ACL to truly get back to their pre-injury levels but I still don't see him slipping down to the teens. Dude was wrecking shit in Overtime Elite playing against the Thompson twins when they were almost 20 and he was just 15.

I just don't want him on OKC covering up all of Chet's deficiencies, although maybe they're happy enough with Sorber and his injury recovery is going well.

I'd actually really like to see him on the Wizards if they can't get Peterson - him and a skinny 3 point shooting shot blocking big like Sarr together would fit like a glove and just wreck opposing offenses

Hi all! Back again for the third straight year of NBA Draft Coverage from yours truly. The 2026 class is shaping up to be legit loaded, especially at the top. We're six weeks in and there's already a clear top 3 that has scouts and GMs having some intense debates about who actually goes first. Let's break it down.

THE TOP 3

Darryn Peterson (Kansas) - The consensus guy right now even with his injury issues. He's dealing with a hamstring but when he plays, it's clear why he's the favorite. He just makes everything look easy, you know? Can create shots in the flow of the game, great playmaker, and at 6-6 he's got the size scouts want. Thing is his health matters a lot for both him and Kansas' tournament run, so that's the main storyline to follow.

AJ Dybantsa (BYU) - This dude might have the most skilled offensive toolkit of the three. He's been putting up around 21 PPG and when he gets going he's unstoppable. He put on a clinic against Clemson with 28 points and 6 dimes. Thing is his 3-point shot is still a work in progress (8-23 from deep) and scouts want to see more consistency on defense. But the ceiling is high if he develops that shot.

Cameron Boozer (Duke) - Honestly there's an argument he's the best player in college basketball right now for a freshman. He's averaging 23.3 PPG, 10 RPG, and 4 APG. Played a brutal schedule early and has been putting on a show. The only knock is he lacks that crazy athleticism some teams want and has had moments where bigger guys bother him inside. But his strength and footwork make up for it. Duke went through some losses recently but Boozer has been a beast regardless.

THE NEXT WAVE

Caleb Wilson (North Carolina) - This guy might be the most impressive in this second tier. Scouts didn't expect him to have this much motor and toughness but he's been a monster for UNC. He's 6-10 with NBA skills already, can play inside and out, versatile on D. Only thing holding him back is his finishing around the rim and his 3-point shot isn't falling yet (3-12) but he's young and improving.

Kingston Flemings (Houston) - This guy came out of nowhere basically. He jumped from like the 37th ranked recruit into lottery consideration. He's been going off in December, averaging 18+ PPG in key wins. His shot is kind of weird looking but he's been hitting it consistently, which is wild. Houston's been dominating and a lot of that is on him running the offense. If this keeps up he's gonna be a top 10 pick for sure.

OTHER GUYS TO WATCH

Mikel Brown Jr. (Louisville) - Elite playmaker but his outside shot has been streaky (26.8% from 3). When it falls he's dangerous.

Chris Cenac Jr. (Houston) - Another Houston guy, 6-11 and super athletic. Still raw but the talent is there, just needs development.

Nate Ament (Tennessee) - Tall wings are always interesting. He's having efficiency issues right now but the skill set is too good to ignore, just needs time.

WHAT'S THE FEEL OF THE CLASS

The top is really strong. Like, all three of Peterson, Dybantsa, and Boozer could legitimately go first depending on who has the pick. It's a real debate which almost never happens.

Guards are loaded in this class, which is cool. Beyond the top 3 you've got Flemings, Brown, and a bunch of other guys who can step in and run an offense right away.

As for the depth beyond those elite guys, it's more up for debate. Some scouts think it's solid, others think it'll be average. Depends who stays versus goes to the NBA.

The money in college is still crazy so expect some of the mid-tier lottery guys to come back for another year. That's gonna keep the board fluid till June.

THINGS TO WATCH

- Peterson's health. If he gets healthy and plays in conference play he locks up the #1 spot. If he misses more time it opens the door for Dybantsa or Boozer.

- Flemings keeping up the efficiency. If his 3-point shot stays consistent through conference play he could legitimately be top 5-10.

- Boozer and Wilson refining their games defensively. They're gonna get picked apart by NBA scouts if they don't show more consistency.

- Who actually leaves versus comes back. That could shift this board crazy over the next few months.

BOTTOM LINE

This draft is gonna be good for a lot of teams. The top 5 can all be foundational pieces and there's real depth there if you're patient. Peterson versus Dybantsa versus Boozer is the story of the class right now, and honestly any of them could go first depending on team preference. It's one of the better draft classes we've seen in a minute, so teams in the lottery should feel pretty good about their odds of finding a legit player.

WHAT ABOUT THE SPURS?

So the Spurs are absolutely cooking right now. They're sitting at 23-8, second in the Western Conference. That's way ahead of what anyone expected for this rebuild. But here's the thing: if they really want to compete, they need some help in the draft.

Here's the situation with the guards: they've got four above-replacement level guards on the roster right now. Two are on cheap rookie-scale contracts, and the other two are locked up long-term. So guards? They're set. What they really need are wings. Quality wings that can defend, shoot, and give them versatility around Wembanyama.

THE WING FOCUS

If they stay in the 12-20 range, the priority should be finding a wing who can contribute immediately and develop into something more. The depth at wing in this draft is solid, which is great for the Spurs.

And honestly? My favorite fit for them is Yaxel Lendeborg from Michigan. Yeah, he's older (he'll be 23 on draft night), but that's actually perfect for what the Spurs need right now. He's a legit NBA player already. This guy is absolutely dominating on a hot Michigan team. He's 6-9 (7-4 wingspan), super versatile, can guard multiple positions, and isn't afraid to crash the boards. His shooting has improved, and he just looks like he fits the Spurs system perfectly. You know those guys who just make winning plays? That's Lendeborg. He's not gonna blow anyone away with athleticism, but he's the kind of solid, high-IQ wing that contending teams love.

For the Spurs' timeline especially, getting someone like Lendeborg who can step in and help immediately while they're actually competitive is way smarter than reaching for a project. Plus he's exactly the type of player who could thrive as the third/fourth option next to Wembanyama.

OTHER WING OPTIONS

If Lendeborg is off the board, there are other wings to consider in that range:

Thomas Haugh (Florida, 6-9 SF) - He's another ready-now option. Good ball mover, plays high energy, solid all-around game. He wouldn't blow you away with upside, but he'd help you win games immediately.

Jayden Quaintance (Kentucky, 6-10 C) - He's dealing with a torn ACL recovery but the physical tools are elite. He's got incredible athleticism, can run the floor, space the rim, and protect the basket. He's a lob threat who can be a vertical spacer next to Wembanyama. Once he gets back healthy and finds his rhythm, he could be a legitimate impact player. It's a bit of a gamble waiting for him to get right, but the ceiling is sky-high if he returns to form.

THE BOTTOM LINE FOR SA

The Spurs' guard situation is handled, so stop chasing point guards in the draft. Target wings. Target guys with size and versatility. And if they can get someone like Lendeborg who's ready to contribute right away while they're actually trying to win? That's a perfect pick for where they are. The rebuild is ahead of schedule, which means they need to start thinking like a contender instead of looking five years down the road.

Milan Momcilovic has become the best shooter in college basketball and it's not even close. He still doesn't get much attention. Nbadraftroom now has him at #29, other mocks still sleep on him. Maybe the memory about his last game in last years tournament still hurts his stock. For a 2nd round pick he should be high on Spurs list.

The Spurs' second round pick strategy is incomprehensible to me.

why would we need a 2nd round pick? We don't have enough minutes according to you :st-lol:

What's weird about Lendeborg is that he has played 3 years in NJCAA before playing 3 years in NCAA. Technically, he is a 6 years college player.
Correct, but he also didn't start playing organized ball until 17.

Wow. Why has he played so long (just saw CC mention that he didn't start playing organized ball until 17).

Also, what is NJCAA compared to NCAA. Can someone explain that to me as I don't know much about the US school system.

Roster is stacked and no playing time for rookies.

Zero room for minutes for players like that.
I'd like to briefly push back on the notion that our roster is too stacked for SRPs.

1-9, we're one of the deepest teams in the league. After that it really falls apart. 10-12 aren't bad. CB is a developmental player, great use of the end of the bench. Kelly O is a decent deep bench player. JMac is a marginal 3rd string PG. After that, it is very iffy. Lindy is a marginal specialist shooter for the deep bench. Bismack and Sochan are not NBA players. At some point in an 82-game season, these guys are going to need to play... and unfortunately we've seen what happens when they do.

The Spurs shouldn't simply ignore the end of the roster because the main rotation is very good.

Well the spurs are stacked on second round pick capital, these drafts are gonna get pretty deep with NIL so we could start draft & stashing as soon as this year. I would prefer consolidating into better picks than taking a million shots in the dark though.

I'm not really interested in draft-and-stash anymore myself. That strategy seems to be a thing of the past these days as overseas player development and scouting isn't some land of dark magic and hidden gems anymore.

I do want to see us use our SRPs more effectively. There have been lots of guys available to be picked in our range that we have passed on (Ajay Mitchell and Reynaud for example). I know there is the issue of SRPs having some level of empowerment of where they go, so I'm not fixated too much on those specific guys... but rather they are an example that there are ready-to-play contributors to be had in the second round (and especially with NIL coming into play). No need for spray-and-pray... just pick one good one to add to the deep bench each year.

I was hoping we drafted Hugo Gonzalez last draft, unfort no

Despite this year's success, I believe the area in greatest need for improvement is the drafting by Wright. Wemby and Harper were picks that almost everyone on this board and most sentient humans would have pulled off. Castle was a solid pick which potentially could have been used on the wrong player but nonetheless was pretty much who should or would have been selected by most folks also.

Now that we really have the foundation of a developing contender, it is imperative to become better at developing a better hit ratio on picks that will be much later in the draft up to and including the second round. Heck, everyone has high hopes for Carter Bryant but lets be honest, the jury is still out at this point and I am in the front row cheering for this kid to put it together.

I can recite the history of questionable picks during the recent down years and kash konsiderations for so many second round picks but I won't. It's just the draft is the weak link for Brian Wright and whatever needs to be done to improve that needs to start happening, now.
