**2025 Baseline Bums NFL Season Thread**

Raiders take a rb instead of a high end OL prospect and now Jeanty is one of 2 backs in the league (chase brown) who averages negative yards before contact per rush
What the hell is going on with that? Is the offensive line that bad or is it the system? I mean it can't be the player

League needs to investigate Wilson after those throws,

I'll just add on parsons that back is questionable...haven't watched how many downs he's playing but let's see if he holds up

raiders OL was trash last year too. had a historically poor run game through about half the season. pass protection wasnt anything special either. they basically brought back the same unit as last year with some reshuffling. last year andre james (shit center) got hurt and they ended up playing Kolton - Parham - JPJ - Meredith - Glaze... and the results were bad. this year they just shuffled JPJ and Meredith, moving JPJ to guard and meredith to C, but its the same starting 5 as last year.

the only additions were claiming Alex Cappa off waivers (has some starting experience, but by multiple measures was the worst starting guard in the league last year for the Bengals. led the league in sacks given up and penalties iirc). they drafted 1 guard and 1 tackle in the 3rd, but neither is pro ready

JPJ has been a disappointment tbh, was very well regarded with drafted in the 2nd last year, but always seems lost. has short arms so cant sustain blocks. i think his only real future is at center but he is awful at the mental aspect of the game (misses assignments, handoffs, etc). and to be fair, he missed week 2 with a concussion so they played Cappa, and then this week even though he was cleared, Carrol said on a short week they didnt want to reshuffle again. so yeah they have started Cappa for 2 weeks, but its not like JPJ would be a savior, he's been inconsistent at best

i think they also need to move on from Parham. he's in his 4th year now. when he was drafted it was known he wasnt some bulldozer/powerhouse but was supposed to be a very clean technician to make up for it. hasnt been the case. he arguably is also best fit for center just because he lacks power and centers tend to have the least 1v1 assignments.

we basically have 3 guys who in some form or another arent good enough to be guards and therefore are best fit at center because of those shortcomings. meredith is physically limited as well but he at least is better about not completely blowing assignments. he may get beat on a block, but at least he is not out there trying to block the wrong guy, or failing ot identify a blitzter.

and then at RT, DJ Glaze was a 3rd round rookie who started last year, and wasnt very good, but he survived out there. usually for a rookie thats a good sign, but he hasnt seemed to take any steps forward this year

Kolton has been a rock at LT for about 6-7 years now, but last year was a down year for him (was battling a lot of injuries to be fair). he was pretty good in weeks 1 and 2 but he was whiffing all over the place today too, and thats concerning

as far as the guys they drafted, i really do like the tackle, Charles Grant. very physically gifted. big guy who moves very well, but he played at a small school so he needs some time to adjust to competition level and clean up a little technique, but i thought he was very good in preseason. main issue with him is in college he played exclusively at LT, but then this preseason, they also exclusively played him at LT. his easiest path to starting would theoretically be at right to bookend Kolton, but he has no exposure to that side. the guard, Caleb Rogers... i dno. not particularly exciting (few guards are). sloppy technique, meh power, meh athlete. but with guards you never know. he does have the reputation of being one of those "nasty" players, which i guess is nice for a guard, but if it doesnt come with adequate technique, it wont matter. we'll see.

but yeah, the coaching staff has to bear a lot of responsibility here. they have been reshuffling the interior guys all offseason. and its really troubling when so many guys are just outright missing assignments, let alone failing to make effective blocks. but the OL coach is a nepotism hire, its pete carroll's son.

i absolutely love Jeanty as a prospect, he was clear RB1 this year. but i badly wanted the raiders to take Membou. seemed like such a clean RT prospect. physically dominant, plays with technique. was a very good pass protector in college and has raw power where he easily anchored. he wasnt a standout bulldozer in the run game but its clear he has the power and physical ability. but so far for the Jets he's been a monster both in run and pass game.

in case you think im monday morning quarterbacking...

RBs make a difference, but you cant fix a broken run game with a running back. the analogy i like is that some planes are better than others, but they all need a runway.

the great teams build through the trenches for obvious reasons. improving at OL improves both your pass and run game. the chiefs heavily invested in their OL during these superbowl runs. drafted and paid big money to Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith, spent a lot of money to sign Jawaan Taylor and Joe Thuney. now they spent a first for Simmons at LT. the chargers invested firsts into Rashawn Slater and then still when ahead and drafted Joe Alt. the eagles have had the best OL in the league for a few years now, and its no surprise Saquon blossomed there. its not a surprise Henry got better leaving Tennesse's broken OL and joining Baltimore (lamar helps too).

and the defensive line is trash outside of Crosby. they did invest a first in Tyree Wilson but its safe to say that as of year 3, he is a bust who people still get excited for about "flashes". Koonce did break out 2 years ago but doesnt look the same coming off the ACL. maybe he needs one more year to truly be back to his old self. we've seen that in several pro athletes where they techcnically come back after 1 year but dont look the same until another year. but DT is just a bunch of journeyman/rotational guys but no real starters who can do anything, provide any push. i do kinda feel for the team here because they paid christian wilkins a lot of money to be a stud DT, but he got hurt early last year and doesnt seem like he was recovering and they had to cut him. brutal loss and they didnt really replace him either.

No idea what the fuck is going Houston. But this is hilarious to me

To add to @spurraider21 's excellent answer, Chip Kelly is their OC who is known to have a lot of plays that have the RB go east/west before they go north. That RB Murray for the Cowboys who went for like 1800 yards the year before he went to Philly was like night and day difference for him partly because of Chip Kelly plays.

He’s been getting blown up behind the line on runs directly up the gut as well

Feels like Lions got hosed on that backwards pass call, tbh.

10 minute, 18 play TD drive.

Haven't seen one of these since... yesterday.

Leak out plays always work to close out games, yet coaches rarely run them...

Fake block on a "run" play and leak out causes defender to hesitate. Defenders are too programmed to stop the run in late game situations.
