What are you listening to right now?

Might as well get this warmed up. I never knew this existed until recently. I read a quote by Robert Plant that said he sings my songs better than I do
Great White did a lot of excellent cover work. this is always the first i think of with them

I guess I'm alone on the metal side of things? :st-lol:
I’m in. This type of music and metalcore is pretty much my safe place.

Landmvrks
Ocean Sleeper
Polaris
Spiritbox
Architects
House of Protection
Bring Me the Horizon
Blessthefall
August Burns Red
After the Burial

I’ll go instrumental a lot with Buckethead

Of course all 90’s grunge/rock and 00’s numetal is all good.

@OK Computer. If you like Radiohead and flaming lips, try (if you haven’t already):
Sparklehorse
Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, GodSpeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai and all those post rock groups
Grandaddy
Drugstore
JJ72
Mum
Damien Rice
Some of these I’ve heard before, the others I’ll check out. I went down this road before and no band quite captures the vibe. Thom Yorke’s hypnotic vocals and the experimental electronic sounds of their songs are a combination I can’t find elsewhere. Well, there is one band that scratched the itch a little bit: The Smile…. which is just Thom Yorke again forming another band after Radiohead. :p

I would give my left nut to see them tour next year, not sure if it’s possible for me right now though.

Cass McCombs
Phosphorescent
Warpaint
This Will Destroy You
Future Islands
James Blake
The Clientele
Baxter Dury
Destroyer
Arthur Russell

Older bands you probably know: Roxy Music, Portishead, Massive Attack

I liked Spiritbox's very early stuff because I was a fan of iwrestledabearonce, but ironically I liked iwabo before Courtney LePlante and her BF took over the band and then split off to form Spiritbox. Was a bigger fan of iwabo with Krysta Cameron on lead vocals... but Courtney LePlante's band before iwabo (Unicron) was a banger.

I haven’t heard anything from unicron. I’m a pretty big Spiritbox fan. I get that bands have to make themselves more accessible to mainstream audiences to stay relevant but they have blended harmony and clean vocals from the get go so I don’t see it as a drop off.

Production value is high on their last album and that can be polarizing.

I make a lot of music so I like a nicely produced album. Over production doesn’t run me off.

Oh no you are not.. my favs are suicidal tendencies, body count, sod, infectious groove, love peak metalica, faith no more, white zombie... list is long :)

The last couple days I found my way into the AI realm of remakes... There's so many good 50's/60's funk and jazzy AI versions of 2Pac all the way to Sound Garden. These tracks are amazing and scary at the same time.

speaking of cover work and my poo-pooing the metal scene... this was used as our first dance at our wedding

Anyone into the blues 'round here?

I've been learning guitar for a couple years now, and it's given me a completely different perspective and taste as a music consumer - I never cared for blues before, but can't get enough now.

It's also insane to see how blues music influenced so many groups and genres across the board - was listening to Led Zeppelin I the other day and Page's playing is bluesy as fuck on it. Never would've thought about it before learning how to play.

For another on-topic question: gym-goers, what's your favorite music to listen to during workouts? I'm looking to expand my current rotation :st-music:

Led zeppelin were clearly blues based. Cream and as well. Jimi Hendricks. Rock would’ve have existed without blues.

Listening to the A history of rock music with 500 songs podcast. Some good history there.

Yeah the transition from more blues centric early zeppelin stuff to more of their trademark heavy metal by the time they reached IV was certainly a journey.

All those guys were heavily influenced by blues. That’s what they grew up listening to. It’s what makes the pioneers of that era so special, beginning with the Beatles, Kinks, blue oyster cult, yardbirds, Hendrix, cream, stones, etc

Led zep by 2 started pulling away from blues. Around that time Black Sabbath really took the metal sound from kinks and even some Beatles (helter skelter) to the next level

Just a fascinating period of music history

For those who like heavier stuff, Death from Above 1979 is great. It’s a two piece that doesn’t have a guitarist. The bassist just plays the guitar parts which gives them this heavy sluggish type of sound.

Went see them live and it was a good show but was surprised to see so many kids. Some of them were quite wasted and was body slamming people, shoving around and generally acting like idiots. So I found this scary looking bald biker dude who was just standing there on his own, clearly didn’t want to get bothered and stood next to him the entire gig. Nobody had the guts to start crap next to us (well him). In fact there was like a 2-man buffer around us. Some ladies clued in after a while and like formed a ball of people around us after a while. Was pretty funny.

My music hot take is that Wolfmother is a top 5 rock album since 1990
you mean 91

91 only... blood sugar / achtung baby / out of time / nevermind / ten / metalica black album / use of illusion / temple of the dog / badmotorfinger ...

not sure what happened in 91 but it is the greatest musical year ever

Was creating a summer beach mix… dig the 90s and early 2000s vibe:

Last year first weekend in October I went to Iron Maiden in San Diego and then Gojira, Spiritbox opening for Korn on Saturday. Wasn’t much there for Korn. That fascination died out in the early 2000s. But getting to see Spiritbox for the first time plus Gojira for a third, especially fresh off their Olympic showcasing was incredible.

Love the classics like Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, Anthrax, and enjoy a lot of Pantera and Slayer, but really into new groove Metal with Sleep Token and Spiritbox, and especially Silent Planet and Bad Omens. IMO, Gojira is my favorite modern Metal band.
