What are you listening to right now?

Along the same lines, anyone into audio gear? If so what systems do you use? 2-speaker? Mobile? Computer-based?

I am mostly a headphone/personal audio guy, but I do have two low/mid-end systems using 50 year old amps. It does sound pretty damn good.

I've been looking into getting a tube amp.

I can either go the cheap route: https://www.parts-express.com/Dayto...rXZiLxsVyMOMuBhK1YbMB0nqw0tgMevxoCVqYQAvD_BwE

Or middle ground route: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08134V3V...NL59CWK9P&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

I'm definitely not going the hi-fi route and spending $10k.

Also been looking for a decent quality CD player because my wife's been asking.

Right now I'm running a Audio-Technica turntable through a Pioneer Elite Home Theater Receiver (though I don't use it for home theater anymore) and a pair of Klipsch Reference bookshelf speakers and a powered sub. Houses here in HI are pretty small, so form factor is key for me.

Not a huge tube guy but those things look great. Do look out for tube rolling though as that is another rabbit hole that will go deep.

Not judging but given you proclivity for car upgrades you’d likely want to upgrade your amps at some point so might as well get one at the upper limit of your budget, which I assume is about $2k given your two amps. Buy used, test it out and you are saving $ right off the bat, often 40% or more. Amps lasts forever too so you don’t have to worry about them dying on you, especially the old stuff.

Schitt ragnarok could be a good choice as it’s a hybrid design. I’ve only heard their older stuff through headphones but they do sound very good. Those Chinese brands like cayin, yaqin and shanling are great deals, even though I think shanling is a bit over priced now. I’ve listened to a cayin and a shanling before and I preferred the cayin sound, even though I don’t remember the model. It’s very sweet and warm sounding. They probably have some integrated models that will take phono too if you need one.

As for CD players, even though it’s old and discontinued, the oppo bdp-205 is just amazing. If that’s too pricey try looking for a bdp-105. Otherwise Cambridge stuff always gets my vote (I have a lo priced network player from them and I felt it punched way above its weight). I’ve heard good things about marantz, audiolab and onkyo players as well. Even though onkyo in particular has a wide range of products so you have to pick through them as there are duds in there.

If you are no averse to Chinese stuff fiio makes competitively priced stuff as well.

Check out us audio mart to see if someone is letting go of some good quality stuff. Facebook marketplace is hit and miss. Not the most reputable place.

I'm doing a dual deep dive into Lou Reed and John Cale right now, starting from Velvet Underground all through present day.

Have to admit I couldn't have told you who John Cale was two years ago but I'm a huge fan now.

Not an R&B guy by any means, but I just started with Frank Ocean and it's amazing.

Anyone into the blues 'round here?

I've been learning guitar for a couple years now, and it's given me a completely different perspective and taste as a music consumer - I never cared for blues before, but can't get enough now.

It's also insane to see how blues music influenced so many groups and genres across the board - was listening to Led Zeppelin I the other day and Page's playing is bluesy as fuck on it. Never would've thought about it before learning how to play.
I'm with you. I listen to blues almost everyday. The morning show for one of our college radio stations is blues based. And I clock a lot of blues in Spotify. An early childhood love of Stevie Ray Vaughan's music set me on that path.

you mean 91

91 only... blood sugar / achtung baby / out of time / nevermind / ten / metalica black album / use of illusion / temple of the dog / badmotorfinger ...

not sure what happened in 91 but it is the greatest musical year ever
I agree 100%. A great time to be a young man in Austin since it was a test bed for a lot music. We heard things there up to three months before wide release.

Even better if you were in Seattle but yeah what an amazing year... even crazier is that most of those albums have been released in September: nevermind, blood sugar sex magic, badmotorfinger, use your illusion.. crazy year, crazy month

Some GOAT level funk, Frusciante just killed this. Can really hear the Parliament/Funkadelic influence, just fucking brilliant in every way.

Nephew turns 18 tomorrow. Over the last few years he’s slowly gotten into rock. I’ve fed it with concerts as best as I could. He recently purchased a record player.

So I bought him Magma by Gojira which I think is perfect Gateway Gojira. Haha

He’s mostly into Grunge and the Grunge-ish metal like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. So this is a risk. But he likes riffs, and few bands riff better than Gojira.

Love me some Nas

The story of how DJ Premier made this beat is nuts. He sampled a record of bird sounds and a Christmas record from some Lutheran church in Minneapolis that somehow landed in a record store in NYC that was going under and Premier was able to buy out half the contents of.

Have always loved Premier but damn this gives even more an appreciation for the genius he is.

Kool Herc called this the anthem of hiphop. So many amazing beats in Apache:

Then loved when Sugar Hill made their own version
