Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think Wemby needs to shoot a few more threes.
I want the emphasis on interior play to continue but we need him to also stretch the defense a bit.
While the plays seem better designed to create favorable shooting situations, I think the coaching staff still gives certain players some leeway to experiment.

This is probably why the team often gets caught up after leading by 20 points. Harper and Castle take three-point shots, and Carte Bryant has some playing time.

Victor still seems to be focusing his development on periods of experimentation in which he works specifically on one aspect of the game. Last year, it was three-pointers, to the point of excess. This year, it's clearly the Giannis style of play. We can already see a difference from the preseason: tonight, Victor avoided bringing the ball up the court. He understood that he was still losing the ball too much in that situation.

As for three-pointers, he'll come back to them when they decide to stop experimenting. The closer they get to the playoffs, the less they'll do this and the less freedom certain players will have.

And, in this game, if Victor didn't take two or three shots like he was going to do in this “Giannis” phase, it's simply because the opportunity didn't arise.

In this experimental context, I think they are still forcing situations where Victor can still drive and dribble in a crowded paint. Soon, I think they will only do this against weak defenders or centers (which is clearly something to avoid against athletic, low forwards).

We also know that Victor often shoots "a-trowa-powa" (three-pointers) when he's hot. Against Toronto, he didn't get the ball enough to string together the spectacular plays punctuated by such shots.

WE STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACKED

I can't believe an actual, real life 2K player exists

And he i a Spur

Holy shit

It's funny because this year it's like Wemby finally figured out he is significantly taller than every one else on the court, and that he should keep the ball high to protect it. he is also crashing the boards, especially offensively, pretty hard. His jumpers are now comfortably over his defender and he realized that they are close to impossible to block.

He has been playing bball all his life, and he is significantly taller than everyone on the court all this time, I am not sure why it took him so long to figure out how to really use it to his advantage. He is a walking mismatch every where he goes.

Wemby has levelled up this year, even his meh games end up with 25/12/3 or some insane numbers.

That was a good thing imo, him taking more 3s last year was part of developing his game at the NBA level, for both getting used to taking 3s but also figuring things out.

Learning is trial and error.

Obviously he won't be averaging 9 threes per game - like he did last season - going forward and that's a good thing; we want him to use his size closer to the rim and have a more balanced game, but when needed he will be ready because it's not new to him (if that makes sense)

You really have to wonder if there are just going to be default “rules” every team sticks to. Iike will teams give him wide open 3’s 100% of the time because the math says 40% from 3 is the absolute best they can hope for on a given posession. Or if it’s just a thing where no one goes to the rim anymore - period. Because he’ll block you 60% of the time so go find a better shot and don’t even try it.
