Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

well, obviously a big Wemby fan, as a long time french spurs fan. but i have to admit i'm not a big fan of the way he talks and behaves sometimes. "I'm the best player of the league when i come back", the obsession and tounting with Chet who is just a class act all the time, celebrating so ostensibly a miss free throw and now the "pure and ethical basket" quote if it's really a dig at OKC...... he seems a very good person and teamate and very coachable. he should let these unnecessary childish things aside...

On the court, it's great to have the full squad. Wemby changes everything defensively, it really allows us to be a very good defensive team with a lot of very capable defenders around him as the control tower.

Offensively, our game is less fluid and fast with him for the moment, but he's drawing so much attention that can be exploited by the others guys with so many good scorers we have around him on our roster.
i'm sure we will soon know how to combine our fluid offense and fast tempo with him and the gravity he brings offensively.
He's uber competitive. Also, if you notice he came in the league very humble, until he got smacked every single game and never got calls. Now he's pissed. He's going to keep talking trash because he can. He's going to keep saying he's the best because he is.

He also could be playing the long game. He's already a superstar, once he starts getting the superstar whistle it will be even better.

I agree what he's been saying can be a bit jarring at times (especially being used to the subdued approach to these things by our franchise legends), but you just gotta love his confidence. At least we know he better be putting in the work to back all that smack up.

last time he said something about the fact he will never get dunked on more than he blocks shots and he had a shitty game after. I don't think that the cocky attitude is right for him and the image he tried to picture at the beginning of his career

Spurs organization will do everything for vic to miss 65 game limit and be ineligible for the awards.

Also what is this mitch doing by playing vic off the bench? Ive never seen a 21 year old framchise player playing off the bench even if that player is on a minute restriction.

Why would the Spurs do that? They obviously don't mind paying Wemby the Supermax he deserves, and would be imbeciles to let some extra % payout cloud their judgement and jeopardize the relationship with their franchise superstar.

Thankfully I haven't seen any indication of that from the Spurs so far -- conspiracy theories notwithstanding. Besides, with the publicity, hype, social media presence etc that Wemby generates just by being on the NBA floor, the Spurs easily recoup whatever money is lost with him earning DPOY/MVP/etc

On another note, I've seen a lot of people mad at Wemby's confidence and comments.... Why are people so fucking miserable? (French fans don't answer, I already know why lol)

I'll freely admit I was a bit skeptical after his latest comment, but he absolutely walked the walk yesterday and gave about the strongest backing to his statement that you can - he was the visible MVP and difference maker en route to beating the nigh-invincible, reigning-champs #1 seed in an elimination game, with their whole team healthy to boot.

Like how could he *not* claim to be the best in the league? You gotta believe you can do something before actually doing it... Love his attitude, and we should really be grateful that our baby GOAT candidate has that fire in him tbh

I cannot wait for Playoff Wemby.

I'm French and I agree ^^

Not starting Wemby totally fucked OKC’s game plan and rhythm. That’s one reason why they did it. Wemby seemed pretty cool with it and the final results speak for themselves.

Steve Nash talked about this in pre-game and pointed out that it was about the minutes restriction and having him on the court at the end of the game. Victor played about seven to eight minutes a quarter for the last three quarters with good breaks to catch his wind and let him be effective.

Some people like Duncan's attitude others prefer Garnet's attitude, I prefer the former nothing to do with being miserable. At the end of the day, I'm still happy that he is a Spurs :D

I was initially annoyed as well with Wemby not starting. Once the 1st quarter was almost done and he hadn't come in I just assumed Vic was a last minute scratch and wouldn't play. I thought the NBA had asked the Spurs to at least announce him as a GTD so people would tune in lol. Mitch knowing he only had 20 minutes of Wemby I can understand the choice to maximize his availability for the 4th quarter. The Thunder certainly seemed shell-shocked whenever he came into the game as well.

Winning the game means not having to apologize so kudos to Mitch. Tim Duncan had several off the bench games during his career due to return from injury, other stars as well...not at all unprecedented.

I guess we were just used to Timmy’s no comment and little emotional robotic ways. He simply let his play do the talking.
As long as Wemby backs up his talk, I’m fine with it and I’m sure most spurs fans will be!

I guess worst case is where he continues to talk but then begins to regress but I don’t foresee that happening.

I don't think people disliking cocky, petty comments is being miserable. It is human nature to feel aversion against arrogant behaviour, even if it is from your own people.

I wonder if someone within the Spurs organization is advising Wemby against these type of comments. He's still young and hasn't won yet, so people still like him; but as soon as he starts winning, people will turn against him if he keeps this up. It just serves him no good. Don't tell us how good you are, just show us and let the rest do the talking.

It seems like he raised the level up this season with the digs, shades, and braggadocio behavior whenever he gets close to a mic. Why give free bulletin board material? why put so much unnecessary pressure on yourself when you can't even guarantee your availability? I don't get it, is this why he connects with trash-talk, fake-tough extraordinaire like KG and not Timmy? I totally agree with you, he is setting himself up for an uncalled-for, un-Spursy villain arc .

Victor was wearing an 'Air Afrique' shirt on the bench during the LAL game. Wondered about the significance, then saw this story in the NY Times Magazine about an MOMA exhibition coming up of Parisian art collective based on the cultural history and significance of Air Afrique. Collective has some sponsorship from Louis Vuitton.
That’s a Nike collection

I think Victor has chosen to embrace the generational talent talk rather than managing it low profile, it must fuel him rather than putting unecessary pressure on his shoulders. I'm not sure this is the way but it is his way. In that regard he is more kobe, TP, MJ than Tim, David or Jokic. As you said so far so good, NBA in general is not a fan of OKC and happy to see a team and a dude raising to the challenge but things can change fast. This is not very Spurs to do that but at the same time, he is coachable, put the team first and drama free, he is just a young confident player who is not afraid to show his ambition.
