Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

I'm glad the discussion is happening because it's really shining a light on some of the shit Wemby does that box score watchers and casuals aren't aware of. Like he deserves to be talked about as a real candidate for sure, and I don't have a problem with him pointing that out. (No surprise Draymond is on team Wemby in this context tbh).

But I still think Shai has had a slightly better season overall -- machine-like consistency across the whole season. They've been playing pretty hurt all year, and I don't know that I agree we can judge MVP solely on what happens Post-ASB. So that just leaves me with picking SGA. It's way way closer than I thought it would be tho.

It's getting to a point where I don't really want Vic to get the MVP this year, tbh :st-lol:

The media glazing and discussion has been great and is very beneficial overall for Wemby and the Spurs, but tbh I'd rather get Wemby the rest and postseason preparation he needs, while also "keeping him hungry" and feeling that chip on his shoulder. It's great that he believes he's the MVP and should win it - that's almost more important than whether he actually gets the award or not. You gotta believe you're the best to really be the best in sports.

Besides, it's both hard to ignore the inconsistency on Wemby's early parts of the season, the lack of minutes played relative to peers (hard to argue less time on the court => more value, especially when it's not a Curry situation where he's sitting every 4th Q, just general low minutes to save up his body), and OKC's consistent regular season dominance. Kinda feels like the discussion around him is getting stupid at this point.

It's clear that OKC is fearful of the Spurs (throwback to Shai's comment "a team that isn't better than you doesn't beat you 3 times in a row" or whatever) and that's plenty good for the thing that actually matters - getting Wemby the FMVP. The entire league is on notice right now..... Let's not blow an early nut celebrating regular season awards tbh, and stay hungry.
20 years from now when I'm arguing with a lebron glazer who's the goat having a 22 year old MVP award would certainly help my case

Wemby's been awesome lately obv but he's definitely in a shooting slump from 3 right now. Shooting 9/37 from 3 (24%) over the past 6 games. It's the only thing holding back his stat-lines back from looking monstrous. Nit-picking though tbh. He's been incredible, especially defensively of course. Hopefully he finishes the season strong and we can really challenge OKC for the 1-Seed. We'll need them to lose at least 2 more games though, maybe 3, and that's a lot to ask of a team that almost never loses to anybody but us and Boston.

Why, because you don't think teams would be willing to part with 5 first round picks in a row?
No, because paying the best players in the league (Wemby is one of them) the super max is not a problem whatsoever for teams/franchises. These guys are actually worth more than the super max. Giving away a generational talent like Wemby for silly reasons and hoping that you somehow get equal production and quality out of five FRP would be terribly irrational thinking and mismanagement.

1. Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

Last week’s ranking: No. 3 ⬆️
Season stats: 24.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.1 blocks

His case: Wembanyama is transforming into a historic defender in such a short period of time. Usually, that’s the toughest part of the game for a young player to master. Wembanyama is different in that he entered the league with solid defensive instincts and, coupled with his enviable size, is making a massive impact here in his third season.

He has 17 blocks in his last three games and is averaging nearly as many blocks per game this season as the Utah Jazz (3.8 bpg), Denver Nuggets (3.9) and Milwaukee Bucks (3.9) are as a team this season. Finally, Wembanyama is doing this despite averaging under 30 minutes a night. His stats would expand with more minutes.

Wow he’s at 1. Im willing to risk playoff matchups to get 1 seed if it meant Wemby getting MVP tbh.

Plus as has been pointed out HCA vs OKC>2nd round match up.

Wow, pretty surprised to see NBA's MVP ladder have Victor ahead of SGA. I don't think that reflects the general sentiment from the actual voters, but still shows how Wemby has forced himself into the conversation.

For what it's worth, DraftKings has SGA at -500 to win MVP with Victor in 2nd at +500.

I'm officially all aboard the Wemby MVP train.
A few weeks ago I preferred the #2 seed, but with the way the Lakers are playing lately (and Luka's history of playoff performances) I'd rather avoid them.
The #1 seed, Wemby MVP, and letting the Lakers and Thunder battle it out in the 2nd round sounds great to me.
GSG!

Wow never thought we would see Wemby be at #1 for MVP ladder when we are still the 2nd seed....

Guess to show that speaking out (Wemby's giving his 3 reasons) really help gather people attention. All the media personnel are debating whether Wemby's reasons are valid also help pushed his narrative.

Staying silent and nothing will be done

Narratives matter, who would've thought... :st-wakeup:

E: also it's actually fuckin' crazy the sheer power that Wemby's words (and actions to back it up) have on the league. As recently as two weeks ago you'd be laughed out the building for pushing a Wemby MVP serious argument -- and the guy just comes out and says "well, defense is half the game, and I've beat Shai 4 times this season, I think I deserve it" and now the odds are shifting to his favor? Truly surreal. We could not be more blessed.

I can't wait until he inevitably speaks out on the refs in the playoffs, maybe it'll be the straw breaking the camel's back and forcing Silver into real changes....

To make it even weirder, I've heard multiple people, including Reggie Miller, say that Wemby will need the Spurs to finish #1 to win MVP... but if the Spurs finish #1 it will be at the very end of the season and by then most votes will already be cast.
Exactly what happened to Timmy in 1999.
