Player The Uncertainty Realm of the Improved Jumpshot of Jeremy Sochan

Makes sense for him. Better to sit on the bench and watch the team make a playoff run instead of getting bought out and no other team asking for his services.

jeremy should troll giannis and post the same "image not going anywhere" clip

Poor Jeremy may be on the Lonnie Walker III career trajectory. If he manages to get on with another team next season he might make some short-term impact before folks grasp he's a net negative. I want him to do well. I like him. He's just a low-IQ basketball player.

Lonnie is actually a great comparison. One of those guys we all just kept waiting to take off and just...never did. A few short stops with other teams and that was all she wrote.

Meanwhile, people on reddit seem to have a hard-on for Jeremy for whatever reason and think he's gonna go elsewhere and turn into an All-Star.

There aren't many of them here... but there are a few!

Not all star, but sochan wasn’t even that bad this year when he played. He regressed from last year as his confidence is totally gone, but he still defended adequately, set good screens and played hard. There was no reason not to play him at all during blowouts. I really don’t get it.

I also find it surprising that no team was willing to trade for him at all. I can see offers being too low and the spurs rejecting those offers but not even a 2nd round pick was surprising.

Does Sochan play tonight? Spurs need to increase his value for this summer, they could do a sign and trade.

I think Sochan is a little injured and his hops isn't there. He really needs that. I also can see the nuggets to target him in the off season.

I expect them to give him some spot minutes rest of the season or if there are injuries, now that the trade deadline's gone and passed, but I doubt he has enough value for any sign and trade possibilities.

I am sorry but he was disastrous mostly this year except for a few decent minutes here and there. His shot is completely gone ..almost no redemption. His defense has been lackadaisical and his positional awareness has been terrible. Last year he at least played decent PF where except for shooting he was useful in many actions. But those actions are wasteful in lineups with Castle, Fox and Harper who are also mediocre shooters and Sochan doesn't fit at all.

I think the Spurs tried everything with Sochan ..and to whose credit ..he willingly tried to work out various alternatives to become a useful fit. But he was disastrous as a Point Forward...mediocre as a Power Forward and useless as backup C. The only thing he was good at was on the ball defense and he has regressed in that department this year.

As regards shooting...the Spurs asked him to remodel his broken shot by emphasising shooting with his right hand to get the right rotations and spin and he dramatically improved as a free throw shooter even while shooting poorly from 3. When he finally started shooting with both hands ..instead of stability ..he brought a new hitch to shooting that screwed up his accuracy at both the Free throw line and the perimeter.

Now he is back to square one with an even more broken shot than what he had when he begun with the Spurs. He has been so poor on offense that he has even lost some abilities like a decent turnaround jumper from the elbows. Now all he does is dribble close to the paint and then hold and turn his back and try to find someone to bail him out of the play.

He used to do a lot of cuts in transition but with such poor shooting the Spurs tried to hide him as the back up C in the dunker's spot and he only got to clog the lanes without offering any offensive rebounding. For some reason his hands suddenly turned to stone as well and he has been hesitant and below average in the other strength he had - finishing.

In sum, the Spurs probably shouldn't have taken him in the first place. His Rodman cosplay and trying to get under the opponents skin by needless needling were never the Spurs way and that should have been a red flag from day one. The stupid hair colouring and social media buffoonery was inversely proportional to his actual production on the court.

If he is really going to fit with the squad, he needs a complete reset and turnover of his attitude and outlook towards the way he plays basketball. The Spurs still need a backup PF in the 30 something games left and he needs to keep his head down and prove himself in practice and get back to doing the little things well such as perimeter defense, cutting and hitting at least the corner threes. But Mitch must keep him on a short leash. Any glitch in the limited minutes and he has to be glued back to the bench. I hope the Spurs have told him that this will be the role going forward. If he demurs ..he can be cut. If he understands that the league considers him dead weight..then he has a chance to redeem himself by being his best self despite limitations in limited minutes.

I hope the message lights a fire under him.

That’s the part that doesn’t make any sense, he has shown a willingness to do anything the team asked of him, so why would everything go to the shitter all of a sudden? I have a hard time picturing him having attitude problems as he’s always been a good soldier. He tried hard although th results aren’t there. He’s cheering for the team and his teammates and is genuinely trying to help, so why would he all of a sudden not be able to do anything, even things he could do well previously?

Intent isn't always the same as outcome, isn't it? Like I can say I will do the right things but what use are words when I haven't really made any improvement through my actions? Cheering teammates from the bench, hi-fives, etc are just the lowest hanging fruit in being a good team player. What is more important is to really find a niche by understanding limitations and make the best use of the strengths by maximizing them. Sochan seems to regress in his strengths and not improve on his limitations. Which is the exact opposite of someone like Castle who also has serious shooting woes, but has improved so much in other areas that he can still be a way better player than last year without a consistent 3 point shot.

I am not even an arm chair behaviouralist or a psychiatrist. But from what I can see as a fan, he seems to be this team-player who says all the right things and even agrees to do them but not really improving on the court. In our line of work, we call such folks brown-nosers. In competitive and dynamic fields of work such as sport or creative fields, we always value folks who add their unique skills to better the team and not just those who just do things as they are told and not doing them well.

Zollins was one of the loudest cheerleading on the bench, waving towel and shit when Wemby made some highlight plays. But off he go when a trade opportunity arises.

No one wanted to trade for him over the last 3 months. No team wants to sign him through a buyout. He is wise to try to get as much money from this current contract as he can.
I don’t think you can assume that. Plenty of teams pick up other teams draft misses, as long as the acquisition cost is zero.

2 points I haven't read in this convo that could explain why he's still here imo...

- Sochan's salary 5.5M (proportion left to be paid) when a lot of teams worked to go below the epron with many doing salary oriented transactions.

- Joining a team half way in the season presents a high risk of Sochan not shining in the few months left and ruining his value, when staying with the Spurs has the "he doesn't fit the system" excuse.

Fans are excited over CB, his highlight reels dunks, his 3pts shots. He’s really outplaying Sochan, and even possibly why the Spurs didn’t bother to trade for Sochan’s replacement, because CB it is! Now it is possible that Sochan has had some offers, but the Spurs promised to land him a good spot. They’d probably waive him if a preferred team would pick him up.

I take it the spurs crashing and burning whenever he steps on the floor, has gone unnoticed

How could it be missed... look at this shit!!! Pretty noticeable how worse things are when he's on the court.

Yeah. Looked up the game logs this season and sochan is -86 for the season over 27 games and 355 minutes. That’s like -8.6 per 36, which is really bad for a winning team like the spurs, who are +5.8 per game, or about 4.3 per 36. That’s a 13 point swing. Granted sochan played a lot of horrible lineup minutes but still bad.

For comparison castle is +128 in 1252 mins, and that’s about a +3.5 per 36. Bryant is -32 in 322 mins (-3.6 per 36 or so), keldon +122 in 1221 mins (+3.6), Julian +296 in 1452 mins (+7.3), Even olynyk is a +10 in 269 mins. I think the k my guy worse is biyimbo based on very limited minutes.

Sigh, I guess I have to admit defeat and hand in my sochan fan club card.

not quite yet.. you have to weight by garbage time minutes as well.. but mostly it is about mitch tbh and you can't put that into analysis it is too much work.. mainly the spurs have been struggling between end of second and start of third quarters. One should look for lineups that spark those negative runs, and often cb is one of the culprits with some obnoxious plus minus results that then level out when he gets a reasonable amount of minutes..

Me too. I thought Sochan's year 3 improvement, and yes there really was one, was a sign he would continue to get better. Both the stats and eye test show he went the other way instead. Full credit to the FO here for not extending him.
