Player The Uncertainty Realm of the Improved Jumpshot of Jeremy Sochan

Ive already said the trade market for him is pretty dead BC the spurs did not extend him. Which means for teams interested he can just sign as a FA soon enough. sochan isn't going get a good return because of this. He's still a develp[ment big and you don't give up assets for that profile. "lets trade our non shooter for a shooter" which team is that going to sign off for, one dimensional no defense shooters like bryn forbes are worth more to most teams.

It's shocking to me that we tried this guy as our starting PG. Sad we didn't give him a little run this year, but him rotting on the bench isn't going to make him any better. I'd of let him play in Austin to at least get reps and maybe give him a hint of trade value.

I'm not. With pop we were playing an offense that didn't need ballhoggers and sochan has shown time and time again he can stay in front of anybody. The idea was to have the tallest longest lineup ever.
Now trying him as a center, that was very stupid.

he doesn’t play garbage time, because even in garbage time the guys are expected to play within the system. He doesn’t know how to do that, so they don’t want him disrupting the harmony. Probably.

It is a little weird. Because even though he’s hopeless, the blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. The kings or bulls could see one of his stat stuffing games and trick themselves into thinking he could be helpful. But we’re announcing to everyone that he’s just really bad.

Usually a point guard has an idea of how to run an offense. Jeremy was lost out there, hence a team that was lost. His basketball IQ doesn't fit the prototype for a point guard, who should be the most court-aware person out there. Playing him as a PG was a huge mistake.

Or is it a Yankees hat....and he's actually going to play baseball now! Brian Wright has traded him TO ANOTHER LEAGUE!!!

The thing about sochan is that he is a chaos merchant. Sure he may not fit into a system but I’m not really seeing much of a system on the spurs now. I may be overlooking things but there is still a lot of drive into the paint and see what happens type of offence. I wouldn’t exactly call this some 4D chess system at any point.

Besides, as I’ve said for a long time, with the lack of shooting, having constant motion and cuts can be beneficial as well, like last years grizzlies. We can have champagne, Vassell, and Barnes (or even wemby or keldon) as a release valve with that type of offence as well and sochan can most definitely be a cutter and offensive rebounder.

He most definitely is not an offensive creator but he does have value, and to my extremely untrained basketball mind he can fit into a system with the spurs personnel. I see the need to develop Bryant, but playing McLaughlin and lunch lady consistently over sochan is just odd. Having the starter player in the mid to high 30s in minutes for a team this deep is also odd (don’t start me on the Harper should play a hell lot more rant).

This team, as constructed, should NOT have the ball in the hands of one persons hand for an extensive period of time. Or should I say we should NOT have a ball dominant player. If you give it to wemby, I can see it but still wont agree, but shoving the ball to castle and making him struggle is not helping him, especially when we have fox and Harper, and to an extent Vassell when he’s healthy. Having castle as part of a three headed monster is perfect for the team, makes the offence less predictable, everybody can you touch the ball, and everybody gets to develop in a more structured and yet less challenging way. All three of them can bring the ball up court, initiate the offence, be the connective piece and finish, and Vassell can do that in a limited capacity as well. Not maximizing that aspect by developing a system for them is just head scratching to me.

Sorry, totally veering to where I should put in the Mitch thread but back to this thread, sochan isn’t a star, but he most definitely can be a regular 10-15 minute guy.

he can give you 15 good minutes in 25% of the games he plays. Thats life with a chaos merchant. Never going to be someone you can plan to be effective. You just have to get lucky, and the luck won’t last 4 playoff rounds. Which makes them fairly worthless for a contending team.

There aren’t any guys I can think of who are generally bad players who give you good games occasionally who were also in some kind of championship rotation.

The simpler story is that he’s a bad nba player and is missing the various qualities needed to thrive in the league, and will have to find a home on a bottom feeder if he wants to keep earning nba money.

Which makes it odd that he is stuck on the bench when the spurs are losing 20 pt leads, especially when the opposing teams perimeter players were carpet bombing us with threes and penetrating the paint like a hot knife through butter. Throw him out there for a few minutes, disrupt the other teams flow as we can’t disrupt our own flow anymore, and just see what happens. If it fails it fails, not like whatever crazy lineup on the floor is working anyways.

At this point we aren’t in the playoffs, we are in the regular season, so talking about counting on him is moot. Besides, throwing him in a game, even a playoff game, as an X factor or change of pace guy is totally different from counting on him. He has shown to play well with wemby but we don’t even see him play with wemby anymore.

Read: bad basketball merchant.

We got plenty of those still. Not as bad as the last six years but we still have those.

I agree that it seems a bit odd that Sochan has almost gotten no minutes at all, even in situations where he actually might have helped. I kind of of hope this means the Spurs organisation doesn't see a future for Sochan here anymore (which is fair) and will be looking to trading him now while he still might have some value, even if it is probably small. Having him on the team and not playing him neither helps the Spurs nor Sochan (who obviously will be looking for a new contract) in the current situation.

The last time Sochan got minutes he bricked two absolutely stone cold wide open corner 3’s in the first few minutes he was on the floor. Neither were close. Then on the third one he got he was wide open again, but he refused to shoot and instead ran towards Victor for a dribble hand off who was being tightly guarded outside the 3 point line.

You have to be an All NBA defensive team level defender to offset that level of offensive ineptitude, which Sochan no longer is.

I’m all for giving him another go, but if he bricks or passes up his first 2 or 3 wide open looks then I’m parking him on the bench again. I can live with misses if they’re shot with confidence and close, but not bricks.

Also with 3 of the 9 rotation guys being non shooters (Castle, Harper, Kornet) it makes things even harder for Sochan to get on the floor, because then you have a 4th non shooter, basically half your rotation.

Worth noting that his mechanics are still schizophrenic. He has several different versions of his jump shot. Sometimes it’s smooth. Sometimes a small hitch. Sometimes a huge hitch. Sometimes sidespin. Sometimes he kicks his legs out to the side.

I guess the jumper is secondary to some bigger issue the coaches have. But it’s still just terrible.
