He's literally been bad at everything this year with little reason to play him. Man, hopefully all the DNP's lights a fire under his ass whether he remains with the Spurs or not.As mentioned earlier in the year, Sochan's main strength, perimeter defence, has been replaced by another much better player in Castle. Vassell and KJ have also stepped up in that area earlier on, so having Sochan on the floor does not add much value, while taking too much away from offence. Add to that his perimeter defence this year is not all that good and that explains the benching.
The other part he brought was offensive rebounds, and both KJ and Kornet has been doing very well in that area. Keldon is 18th in the league right now and Kornet is 9th. Sochan isn't bad when he's on the court at 8.5%, which would put him at #25 in the league if he played enough minutes, but again, if we already have two guys in the top 20. Besides, last year he led the team at 10 on OREB% (would've ranked 13th in the league if he qualified), and had a respectable 17.7% on DREB% (44th).
So far this year, Sochan isn't horrible when given the time, but he has certainly regressed. As a roll man on screen and roll, he is actually 92.7% percentile in the league when factoring scoring, FT and and one frequencies. The problem is that is is on very small sample (0.7 possession per game). He is also 83rd % on transition offence at1.3ppp.
His defence, which was once his calling card, has been bad. He is:
On offence, he was decent at cutting last year at 44th %ile, this year he is at 7th %ile in the leaue.
- 12th %ile on pick and roll defence on the roll man. 14th last year
- 10th on pick and roll on the ball handler. 68th last year.
- 39th on isolation d. 87th last year.
- 79th on post ups. 66th last year.
- 2nd % on spot ups letting in a ghastly 1.44 ppp. 78th last year.
Numbers don't lie. he is definitely regressed from last year. How much is it due to the change in roles, how much due to inconsistent minutes, and how much due to him being unprepared, and how much it is due to him being figured out is unknown.
This is good stuff. The other piece is that his shooting is not good enough to play along side Steph until such time that Steph improves to above 35%. Its unfortunate bc PF is such a position of need.As mentioned earlier in the year, Sochan's main strength, perimeter defence, has been replaced by another much better player in Castle. I disagree. Like, what you're saying is right, but at the end of the day, I care more what you do on the court for the real games. Allen Iverson was late and didn't care much about practice. Wilt skipped practices and said to the team you can either have me for the game or for practice, but not both (I think this was when he was in Philadelphia, he lived in NY or something, so he had to travel). Both of those guys are obviously much better players that Sochan, but that doesn't mean Sochan doesn't care. Some people are just late. I think I read Kawhi has been late getting to the plane for away games and the whole team's been waiting for him to turn up so they can take off, but he hasn't gotten benched. Doesn't mean they don't care or are lazy. If that is an issue for Jeremy, and if he's been genuinely trying to fix it, I'd be OK with that. Having said that, if he doesn't understand the on court stuff (offense and defense), then in that situation I wouldn't play him.I actually would not.
You're making millions and if you can't show up for those few hours of work daily, then you don't deserve to be on the team even if you're a great player, let alone a fundamentally flawed one like Jeremy.
He can see the floor only when both Castle and Kornet sit, otherwise our spacing isn't good enough.
This is my thinking. If HB can't hit shots at all, then he has a chance to take HB's minutes because Harrison doesn't usually do much in he way of rebounding or defense if he isn't hitting shots. I will say it this way - If Harrison continues to shoot poorly and JS can hit a slightly better clip from three point range than HB, I'd rather Jeremy take his spot because at least you will get some hustle, rebounding and defense to go with it.This is good stuff. The other piece is that his shooting is not good enough to play along side Steph until such time that Steph improves to above 35%. Its unfortunate bc PF is such a position of need.
But if I'm Sochan this is my time to get after it with HB slumping so damn hard. i get the veteran presence thing, but if hes not making 3s HB gives up way to much on the other side to be useful. Might as well get Sochan's defense so similar shooting percentages.
We've said this exactly stuff for yearsWe shouldn’t write off Sochan yet. If he can at least reliably hit the corner three and get back to his defensive and cutting/finishing ability from previous seasons then he should earn continued minutes off the bench. I like the pairing with Wemby tbh
Being late is something I can't tolerate in my personal life and I just refuse to engage with people that leave everything until the last moment and are often late.I disagree. Like, what you're saying is right, but at the end of the day, I care more what you do on the court for the real games.
Probably two of the greatest games in Spurs history. We have to back to Duncan's near Quad-Double in the 2003 finals to find a more significant individual performance in a Spurs uniform.2 and 6pts the last two games, monster games??![]()
How many more years should we wait for his shot to come around? We shouldn’t write off Sochan yet. Who knew that 3 point shooting would be an issue for this team? I’m shocked.
That being said I will enjoy Sochans final moments in SA. Wizards just traded for Trae Young. They’re going to need defense to offset that expensive traffic cone they bought. They’re a young immature team. The fit is perfect. I want Sochan to play great and maybe we can trade him for a FRP from them.
Similarly, shooting under 30% even though nobody guards you will also send you to the pine. There’s no way to game this - he’s not good enough on offense to be a rotation player on this team. Whether he discovers his groove or not, he just isn’t capable of doing…stuff.sochan and olynyk have been detrimentally passive when open for a three. Think w sochans benching and whats seems to be more decisive shooting the last couple of games, he hopefully understands being fearful of misses is no longer an option. Hes gotta live or die by being able to shoot, and passing up opportunities will get him put on the pine.
SO you're saying there's a CHANce?Similarly, shooting under 30% even though nobody guards you will also send you to the pine.
