Lakers just don't have enough assets tbh. Every top team in the league right now has core pieces that were acquired via the draft.

They'll have a ton of cap space this summer when LeBron leaves but a big chunk of that will be taken up by Reaves' extension and their FA targets (Watson, Kessler) are gonna be very hard to pry away.

Sure, they have the Dodgers ownership and minds coming in which should help. But even the heart of the Dodgers' recent success was because of an excellent farm system in tandem with the Japan > Los Angeles pipeline which is meaningless in the NBA.

They're the Lakers so I'm sure they'll get handed some bullshit but it's just going to be very hard to be competitive against SA/OKC in the coming years with their dearth of assets. They essentially will have to luck into another Reaves type acquisition via the draft and, frankly, Luka's fat body has a ton of basketball mileage on it. That prime window isn't as long as some Lakerfan might think tbh.
They won't do it because he generates so much revenue, but the absolute best move for them would be trading Luka for the biggest haul in league history.
No chance they build a legit contender in just one summer, Luka turned 27 already.
Meaning he'll be 29 by the time they build a legit roster...if they even do it since they need so much and have no assets to do it.
At least not compared to what other top contenders have at their disposal.

And as you say, Luka doesn't look like he'll age well and be on MVP level in his 30s.

Agreed tbh. And agree that they likely won't do it until it's likely too late.

I think they'll re-sign Reaves and try to sell high on him as early as they can next season. Hopefully, they're still hung up on the antiquated philosophy of getting another "star" to pair with Luka/Reaves but I suspect the incoming braintrust will be too smart for that.

I really hope Pelinka isn't fired too soon, that dude is terrible :st-lol:

Well that and the fact the Dodgers are willing to do these insane deferred contracts that aren't legal in the NBA.

If they flipped Luka for an appropriate haul, it would be the most epic "I traded this red paperclip for a house!" moment ever... Palinka should absolutely do it.

Welp we started playing well in the 4th and so did the Thunder...

Love to see guys like Lowe calling out Luka's whining. He called him unwatchable because he whines on every play... Zach, being the mouthpiece for every sane Basketball Watcher, yet again
Zach Lowe is an amazing sports journalist. But I miss his writing. He is a great podcaster but his writing was sublime. Miss that aspect of his journalism.

Bill Simmons was an enjoyable read too and he hasn't written an article in like a decade. It's a bummer tbh.

I want this team to go for it (1st seed and best overall record). At this point, i don't care how the brackets shake out, i want the Spurs red hot entering the playoffs, in rythym, and playing their best basketball. Houston chilling out the last week of past season having nothing to play for is a cautionary tale..

Bill Simmons is probably my all time favourite writer going back to the mid 00’s.

He was one of the first to call out main stream media BS and call it how it really was. I use to laugh watching him on ESPN when he’d get Magic and Jalen Rose rage baited and worked up by spitting cold hard facts and when it didn’t align with their BS incoherent takes they’d start attacking him for not being a pro athlete.

Zach Lowe was yahoo’s best asset back in the day. And what simmons built at grantland was really phenomenal

So we are at Brooklyn tomorrow to wrap up our b2b while Houston plays in Orlando to complete theirs. If we open up a 6 game lead against Houston too, i think that’s a wrap on #2

First double digit win streak in a double digit amount of seasons (10 game winning streak for first time since 67-win 2016 season, last season with Timmy.) Can't believe it's been 10 years since Timmy retired. I'm getting old as fuck. Aging sucks.

Growing up, a double digit win streak at some point at least once every season was an expectation, not something to merely hope for.

It’s ridiculous to be in the hunt for the number one seed. The Spurs merely going 15 to 9 the rest of the way to get to 57 wins. I mean, there’s not too many people who would’ve predicted that record. I’m not the kind of guy who gets ahead of themselves on records, but there is a chance to do something pretty special this season. Now I want to emphasize that the Thunder have been injured whether or not they’ve been resting the rest of their players. If healthy, I’m pretty sure they would get the number 1 seed. This so-called slumping might work in their advantage in the playoffs. I still think we match up great if we end up meeting them.

Denver & Minnesota gives me pause. The Nuggets healthy including Gordon are going to be a very tough matchup.

Tomorrow night and Sunday will give us even a better indication if we can go over 57 W’s.
