They won't do it because he generates so much revenue, but the absolute best move for them would be trading Luka for the biggest haul in league history.Lakers just don't have enough assets tbh. Every top team in the league right now has core pieces that were acquired via the draft.
They'll have a ton of cap space this summer when LeBron leaves but a big chunk of that will be taken up by Reaves' extension and their FA targets (Watson, Kessler) are gonna be very hard to pry away.
Sure, they have the Dodgers ownership and minds coming in which should help. But even the heart of the Dodgers' recent success was because of an excellent farm system in tandem with the Japan > Los Angeles pipeline which is meaningless in the NBA.
They're the Lakers so I'm sure they'll get handed some bullshit but it's just going to be very hard to be competitive against SA/OKC in the coming years with their dearth of assets. They essentially will have to luck into another Reaves type acquisition via the draft and, frankly, Luka's fat body has a ton of basketball mileage on it. That prime window isn't as long as some Lakerfan might think tbh.
No chance they build a legit contender in just one summer, Luka turned 27 already.
Meaning he'll be 29 by the time they build a legit roster...if they even do it since they need so much and have no assets to do it.
At least not compared to what other top contenders have at their disposal.
And as you say, Luka doesn't look like he'll age well and be on MVP level in his 30s.
