News The Official Check Here Before Asking About Injury Return Dates Thread

I can't imagine Wemby missing less than 2 games with how cautious the staff is. The next two are a back to back too.

"Obviously it's a quick trip," Johnson said before tipoff at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. "It was just wise to keep him home and to make sure he had all the resources and all the support he could from being there. We’re encouraged. We’re going to take it day-by-day.”
Asked if Wembanyama would be in play to suit up Saturday at home against Portland, Johnson did not completely rule it out.
"It's too quick to say for sure," Johnson said. "But we’re encouraged by what we’ve seen.”

English translation: “Devin Vassell had a goal this season with the Spurs: to manage to play 82 games after having experienced quite a few physical setbacks during his early years. Unfortunately for him, the MRI he had today revealed a groin strain. He should miss several weeks. To be continued.”

Not sure if this is based on actual discussion with people in the organization or just an estimate based on the diagnosis, but sounds like a multi-week absence for Vassell unfortunately.

Bummer about Vassell. I notice that the Spurs & Blazers have not submitted injury reports yet, along with a couple of other teams.

That sucks about Vassell. He’s really improved a lot this year and even playing better defense. I don’t want to be a cliche, but the silver lining is Champ is a better fit in the SL with better rebounder, bigger defender and a true catch-and-shoot guy, quick release.
Champs has been good and that supernova performance really brought the team back to life in that win against NY but right now I trust Devin more with the shooting plus he's still better as a three-level threat.
Sucks that he's out a while.

I'd be shocked if he's not on a minutes restriction and they allow him to play both ends of the back to back, so a virtual lock he misses another game and inches closer to losing award eligibility.

They better be careful to not overdo it with the precautionary measures and cost him individual accolades before he's even had a chance to accumulate them.

Wemby is deferring for now, but they should be able to correctly read the room, right? He said he expects/feel he will be back next game including a reference to 65-game limit ("in my mind").
Obviously it's all moot since it appears he dodged a bullet with what looked like a multiple-months injury at first glance, but him going 0-3 on DPOY awards in his first 3 seasons is something that would surely rankle with him especially if he ends up missing out by a game or two (see also his comments on how he probably sat out far longer than he should've with the calf strain)..

"Johnson acknowledged that Wembanyama was lobbying to play from the day he suffered the injury on Nov. 14, trying to get into a game in Sacramento two days later. The Spurs shut him down and stated they would be abundantly cautious with Wembanyama, which was not easy for him to accept.

But it’s true if it was only me, I would have came back earlier,” Wembanyama said. “But I think it’s more reasonable to do it (this) way, to listen to them and do as they said. Because, I mean, there was no reason to take (an) inconsiderate risk two days after my injury.”
Wembanyama accepted the advice, but he’s been pushing for clearance for quite some time. Johnson noted that the conversation around Wembanyama’s return has been going on for two weeks."

I would think if the Spurs get their way he will sit both under the reasoning/logic of "it gets him 5 more days of rest". Time to see if Vic has the lobbying juice as the franchise player or not. For my thinking, if everything is structurally sound and the MRI was fully clean then he should probably suit up. His hyper-extension was of the freak variety, not someone falling into his leg. He hasn't had much mileage on him this season thanks to the month off from the calf strain and subsequent minutes restriction.

At some point, the basketball player just needs to play basketball.

Sounds like LAL is what they are targeting, but I'll be surprised if he plays in either.

So long as we don't play like assholes who have never shot a basketball before, we shouldn't need Wemby for either of these games if we're being honest.

doctor who says he knee can handle 25 minutes of basketball one day, but if he plays 25 minute of basketball the next day, his knee will fall off
Feels like as long as he's not lobbying hard-- by that i mean putting his foot down-- they'll keep sitting him for as long as they can. I understand being spooked by a calf strain, but a freak hyperextension with not a minimal damage to ligaments or intolerable pain and yet a week later and he's still iffy might just be an overkill at this point..

I don’t know the rules. But can’t he play a couple of minutes and sit, just to satisfy the 65 required?

You'll need him for the Laker game tbh.

Won't beat the Lakers without him IMO and also might not beat Memphis either. Spurs are being overly cautious IMO, but I understand why. I don't like it, but I understand.
