He's a mediocre shooter, sub par rebounder and lightweight, who can't spare Wembanyama from defending physical scoring bigs.

If Hachimura gets traded to the Cavaliers, unless they trade Allen this off season to free up space to re-sign him, he'll probably be the Spurs number one target. Basically a younger, bigger, stronger Barnes.

Watching some of TJ last night and there is a dude who has a very tentative grasp of what is going on around him on the court. Definitely has the physical tools, but, don't think he puts it together.

Agree, Sochan isn't all that great in our system, but at least he's competent. At times TJ looks totally lost.

Barnes can’t do any of those things,either. I’m not sure what kind of shooting you’re looking for, but 35-36% is considered a good floor spacing big. Brook Lopez, considered a quality floor spacing big by…everyone, has a career mark of 35%.

Yeah, but Barnes is already on the team and on an expiring contract.

Lopez is a center though, so he has more value if he's able to pull opposing rim protectors out of the paint. Also, the standard for shooting increases the more you go down the positional or role spectrum.

If they're going to give up an actual asset, I'd rather aim higher. Otherwise, I'd rather look at options who won't cost such a thing.

an actual big shooting 35-36% from 3 is different from an undersized 4 like HB doing it. barnes justifies him being out there by being a corner sniper. defensively he is passable and he at least tries doing fundamental things like boxing out on the other end even if he's not a prolific rebounder. but really its the shooting that is the lynchpin for him. Aldama is a better rebounder than Barnes and is more consistently a threat off the dribble as well. if HB is only shooting about as well as Aldama, then Aldama is the superior option

All this speculation and we’d end up like those poor Australian kids waiting for Allen Iverson to show up, but ending with a human disappointment of nothing.

I am very curious how the spurs deal with these expirings from an asset management perspective. I understand they’ll be an over the cap team this summer largely limited to improving the roster via the exceptions, right?

Im convinced they want to keep Barnes at the right price, and they’ll have his Byrd rights to do so. But I think it’d be malpractice to not at least rollover the KO/Sochan expirings by getting another player that expires next year.

Jarace isn't bringing a real FRP. I'd still do the Sochan + a couple 2nds though..

1) Spurs aren't a true contender this season.
2) Carter Bryant is a legit prospect who will turn into a quality 3&D role player.

then doing nothing significant at this trade deadline makes a lot of sense.

Upgrading this season's Spurs third string players is useless. It might even be counter productive if these players take away minutes from Harper and Bryant.

The Phoenix Suns, who are seeking power forward depth, are among several teams that have checked in on San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, league sources told HoopsHype. Suns center Nick Richards was brought up during exploratory talks, sources said. However, such a move would push the Suns further above the luxury tax, which is not ideally something Phoenix wants to do.

Sochan, a 22-year-old forward who’s averaged 11.4 points and 6.1 rebounds over the previous three seasons combined, is eligible for up to a $9.62 million qualifying offer this summer that would make him a restricted free agent.

I just don't want the Spurs to miss out on a potential 2003 like run by doing nothing. I'm not saying they should give up future capital in first round picks (not unless it's for a really good deal that could be a long-term fit), but just anything that can help to give the team a chance at a maybe magical run. You never know what could happen with other teams injury wise. If OKC ain't healthy/have injuries at the wrong time, Spurs could have a shot, if Denver ain't healthy etc., Spurs could have a better shot than expected. They shouldn't go into the playoffs thinking "no shot, or not this year." It could be this year, you never know what could happen. If there were multiple teams clear cut above the Spurs, then yeah, maybe it doesn't matter, but I don't quite think there are. Health being equal, I think OKC is the team above and probably Denver too if fully healthy as the clear teams above. Not sure if anyone else is clearly above the Spurs.

This. And you never know, how the situation of other contenders develops regarding injuries. A window might open, we don't see yet. Noone had the Pacers in the finals at this point last season.

Nick Richards makes sense on paper, if healthy. 6'11" big, expiring $5M contract, former Kentucky Wildcat teammate of Keldon Johnson, and aligns with Phoenix goals if they want to get a peek at Sochan.

Get a free look at a possible 3rd center, and maybe it determines direction in the next draft; do we grab backup center in 2nd round, or resign Richards and pocket cash considerations.

I quite agree with you but I just doubt Spurs FO and coaching staff think that way. Guaranteeing both Waters and Biyombo is quite a sign of lack of ambition for this season. The way Mitch is coaching sometimes also hints into Spurs being more development oriented.

Spurs have so much second round picks they could use 1 or 2 to improve the end of the bench and there will also have the buyout market. We will see what they will do but I'm not optimistic they will be active on these fronts.

The Spurs are clearly overachieving relative to the strength and experience of the squad, but the FO mustn't think that they aren't ready to contend. Wemby is already in the top 5 in the league now and is the only two-way player in that top 5 other than SGA. And Fox used to be a franchise leader. So the Spurs shouldnt' stay content with what they have now. Sochan was supposed to be a first string player but he has regressed into a third string one. And Olynyk has also been a net negative. Turning them into one more useful player who can shoot, is something that the Spurs must not give up on.

We don't have any minutes available that need upgrading except for PF position, how hard is that to understand?
Young guys got us here, I'm not taking away playoff minutes from them just to have a couple of washed veterans chuck shots and play no defense.

Fox/Harper/Castle should get all the guard minutes. If there are some left over, Devin takes those.
Devin/Champ/Keldon get the wing minutes, with Barnes also getting at least 20. We could take away some of those Barnes minutes, but that's about it.
We need a third big since Wemby is an injury risk, but that player wouldn't get any minutes if both Wemby and Kornet are available.

McLaughlin and Waters are more or less useless, but I'm not using even second rounders to get someone who takes away minutes from our young guys.
Harper needs more minutes as it is, let alone if we get another guard.
