Anybody have interest in trading a couple mediocre second rounders for Julian Philips out of Chicago? 6'8" in shoes, almost 7' wingspan, high level athlete, already a decent defensive player. I liked him decently well coming out of college, I think he's improved every year. His main issue is that he can't' shoot - yet, but he's improved his FT% up to >80% and he's still only 22. He can barely get minutes in Chicago, but seems like a buy-low candidate if he makes the shooting leap like a some of the Boston wings (Walsh, Minott, etc.). Might be worth taking a bet on if he can become bigger Derrick Jones Jr, who is a nice rotation piece.
Interesting suggestion,
@SpursBills.
I took your cue and tried to find out similar low-usage, decent impact (EPM) players who are probably underplayed by their teams. These are some of the names that pop out - (ignoring rookies or rookie contracts who won't be traded) that could help the Spurs (ignoring poor 3P shooters except for Centers). Some are unheralded and some are veterans.
1. Jamison Battle (TOR), 6-7, 220. SF (unguaranteed, less than minimum two year contract), (shooting 59.1% on three, low volume).
2. Duop Reath (POR), 6-9, 245, C (unguaranteed minimum expiring contract)
3. Pat Connaughton (CHO), 6-5, 209, SF/SG (veteran, expiring contact, $9 million). Pretty much consistent 3 pt shooter and good defender for his position
4. Baylor Scheierman (BOS), 6-6, 205, SF/SG (on three year contract, but last two years are team options, $2.6 million). Very good 3 pt shooter and positive impact on defense. Part of a four headed unheralded core who are outperforming their salaries this season along with Jordan Walsh, Josh Minott and Neemias Quetta)
5. Marvin Bagley III (WAS), 6-10, 235 (PF/C) (minimum, expiring). No great shakes but better than Sochan & Biyombo as a PF/C.
6. Jay Huff (IND), 7-1, 240 (C). Very good defensive impact. Has a 3p threat (32% this year on volume - 4 attempts - shooting).
7. Precious Achiuwa (SAC), 6-8, 243 (C) (minimum expiring). Good all round defender, very good rebounder, decent shot blocking threat, athletic. But offers little on offense, and poor shooter, including on FTs (among worst in league). Best, a Biyombo replacement.
(We have already discussed Minott, Walsh and Quetta and I doubt Boston is letting any of them to leave).
