Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

Imagine the Spurs making these two relatively simple trades.

Tre Murphy for Vassell + 2027 Hawks FRP + SRP’s

PJ Washington for expirings (Sochan, Olynyk) + Mavs 2030 FRP swap + Spurs 2029 or 2031 FRP + SRP’s

Wemby - Kornet
PJ - Barnes
Murphy - Keldon
Castle - Champ
Fox - Harper

My goodness. Shooting, defense, toughness, size, intangibles, rim pressure.

PJ Washington isn't worth 2 FRPs + SRPs, let alone unprotected picks with swaps attached. He's a good role player but valuations are bonkers. When you're looking for role players, you should make a reasonable offer and move on if the other team demands a ridiculous price tag, just move on and get creative, pretty much every role player we now crave could be had for much cheaper a season or two ago, if you only see them once they slap you in the face you're doing something wrong.

As an early Murphy truther, I obviously think TM3 is a significantly better player than Big Game Dev, but I think we're lucky in that Devin's play this year (spurred on by being demoted to a role better suited to his level of competence, to use Kirk Goldsberry's phrase) and combined with the lack of a leap from Murphy (his stats are pretty much identical to last year's other than his REB% is up a nice bit but his USG% has taken a tick down) has perhaps narrowed the gap in their perceived value.

I don't he is a 3 FRP worthy upgrade... but it might not take 3 FRP at this point. I may be overly ambitious here... but I think there is an outside shot one FRP could do in a swap.

The Vassell and TM3 gap is much closer than it was last year. He’s an upgrade but not two rotation players and 3 1sts of an upgrade.

I’d also have a healthy fear that he wouldn’t be nearly as impactful here since he’d be coming from a team that has been circling the toilet for a few years. Easy to put up numbers on a shit squad.

Cam Johnson is another bums darling that has struggled to be impactful in Denver. Although he has looked much better recently. This trade gives me Cam vibes.

Devin is producing now. Fitting in exactly where he needs to fit in.

We’d probably have to make the trade but Vassell and 3 firsts is a nonstarter for me. Even 2 firsts is not super appealing either.

I believe the spurs should not look for higher end options like Murphy at this point. On offence we have wemby, fox, Harper and castle, each one of them can drive an offence on their own. Murphy would be a nice finisher but if the role is to have a player who plays d and finish we can get much cheaper options like the NAWs and the camara’s of the world.

I wouldn’t mind swapping Vassell plus a few seconds for an Andrew wiggins rental. Miami gets a few years younger, we get a better player for a few million more per year but one year less. If wiggins is willing to come off the bench then even better as I see a lineup of him, KJ kornet and Harper being a good enough second unit to hold our own of most teams starting lineup. Get a shooter like a cam Spencer or Jaylon Tyson, who I believe can be had without a crap load in return to put in the 2 guard starting spot and we are good to go.

Sochan probably doesn’t get much value now, so I don’t see him going straight up for any valuable piece in return, but he’d be a good player to grease the wheels on a multi team trade due to his rookie scale salary and can just no give a QO. Any other position I think are set.

I would have said yes to a Wiggins and Vassell swap 10 out of 10 times but I don’t think I’d do this trade right now.

Like Scott, I've been on the hate-Dev train too, but I have to admit thats he's fitting in better than I expected and I'd like to see what he looks like with all of our top 4 guys playing (which we haven't seen this season). I wouldn't do the Wiggins deal and even if I did I think we'd be getting those 2nd's judging by where each guy is now. Going back to TM I'd be intrigued with a TM for Sochan, Olynyk, BB + Atlanta 2027

PJ likely gets traded this offseason, I’d say the Mavs will get at least 1 unprotected or very lightly protected pick for him if it’s a pick based deal. I could see 1 swap + 1 pick lightly protected from a contender or a team looking to jump to a contender which is what the Spurs are. Of course they should try get the deal done with just the Mavs swap, you negotiate hard with that and see if the Mavs do it, but I don’t think they do. The Spurs giving up Derrick White to Boston for a top 1 protected swap was an absolute steal for Boston, the Spurs doing the same for PJ would be the same.

When was the last time the Spurs drafted an elite two way role player with all the late FRPs they had since the Duncan era? You’d have to go back to Derrick white in 2017 who was a guard, Kawhi in 2011, then Tiago Splitter in 2007 who was a C. 3 in 25 years and only 1 was a wing, not a great track record. Maybe Carter Bryant breaks the mould.

Also need to remember you need role players who play defense and rebound in the playoffs, I hope Barnes, Champagnie, Keldon kill it in the playoffs in those areas, but I have my doubts.

These two guys upping their trade value. Playing team ball. Finding peace in their role on a team with an elite backcourt and star center. These two guys have been the heartbeat of the team while we coddle are precious wounded.

The first thing you guys want to do is ship them off.

The one thing you can’t trade for is chemistry. It took awhile to build this. Let it simmer.

I know at some point some tough decisions need to be made but for the first time in a long time I hope we don’t make any trades with our core 7-8 players.

Jeremy Sochan ($7.1M expiring)
2026 Utah SRP (projected 31-34)
Warriors Receive:
Moses Moody ($11.6M → $12.5M → $13M through 2027-28)

Warriors get a decent tax relief (projected to pay $81 million this season in repeater tax) and the possibility of getting Sochan to play like a Donkeymond Green backup plus we add a sweetener in the high SRP.

Moody is what he is - a good defensive minded wing with good shooting and will be a fit with the Wemby-Fox-Castle-Harper core. Plus he is insurance in case the Spurs aren't able to re-sign Barnes for a decent contract or if Champs leaves in 2027 because of a great contract elsewhere (he will deserve it).

The only hitch is that we lose a backup C option ..but in any case we need to get rid of Biyombo for a more useful third string C..which could be Bassey or Micah Potter or maybe even the corpse of Brook Lopez when he gets cut from the Clippers inevitably.

The main trade is Moody for Sochan though.

I don't think Dumars is looking to be fleeced again. He's probably going to be asking for more in any potential upcoming trade to try and recoup that lottery pick he sent to Atlanta.

Whoever said this had is a smart point re the gap between the DV and TM3 players. I’d also like to understand TM3’s defensive numbers— have been reading elsewhere that he is highly overrated in that area?

I have no issues with Vassells performance this year and am pleasantly surprised. But I’m still hesitant to pay $27M for a fourth/fifth option when there are better options in the market for less.

With the talent the spurs have now, the focus should be:
1) get the complimentary players to fit into the system. There are no needs for big names or stars anymore. THe kornets and the Barnes are exactly the types we should focus on
2) get as many draft picks as possible so that we can get a pipeline to replenish these complementary players. I’m thinking our draft pick cupboard is sort of bare now. One pick a year is better than one pick every other year but multiple picks a year would be even better. The 2nds also have to be well managed now. Either used to trade for or draft and develop useful players.

This is pretty reasonable even though the warriors probably say no. Moody's upped his 3 point volume every year while his percentages haven't taken a real hit, he's a good defender, and his percentages look bad this year because he's having an anomalous year shooting poorly from 2. I think he's actually got some Nesmith equity in his development and is worth it if you can get him for cheap, plus if he works out it allows you to use Vassell as a valuable trade piece. The Utah 2026 2nd rounder is actually very valuable, probably more so than a typical late first, and I'd try and trade pretty much any second besides that one.
