Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

i think some of the calculus on Keon would be you sign him to a multiyear deal knowing his role wont be huge right now, but if we do in fact move off of one of fox/castle/harper in a couple of years then he steps up
I will most likely be wrong about this, but I don't see Keon signing another bargain deal. Kangz should have done that last summer by declining his option and sending him into RFA in a down market... but next year he'll be a UFA and more teams will have space and I think he and his agents are probably quite aware of that.

^ I've been trying to think of teams that could use a player like Dev while also having the pieces to make it work. Aside from SAC (obligatory inclusion for fleecing possibility), my preferred match is Chicago especially if they see themselves as a solid Top 6 playoff team if the East this year.
  • I dont know what to make of Pat Williams, but I did read CHI was open to moving him last year (finally). Seems like a fit on paper here.
  • I could also see a deal around Huerter and an asset (not sure how Spurs view Essengue for example).
  • I could also see Jalen Smith having some appeal here but not sure how CHI sees him (Huerter/Smith/small asset)
NOLA is interesting given the panic potential over there, but not sure they'd off-load Herb to us. Having a hard time seeing another viable team right now.
Not sure why they'd need/want Vassell, they have Coby White, whose basically a better version of Dev whose progressing yr/yr instead of regressing. Same age, same size, better ball handler/creator so 1/2 vs 2/3. Literally the exact same career O and D Rtgs, except Coby has been steadily improving the past 3 yrs where Dev has been regressing. I'm rather have Coby, Bulls prolly would too, not sure who'd want both, doubt that's the Bulls.

I still think Dev could be a good fit with a tanking team and I still think he could look better as the yr goes on, I've been pretty happy with him this yr.
But also agree with Scott, if he balls out with Vic/Castle done, or really at any time this season, I'd look to move him for anything that breaks his salary up into easier to move pieces.

you're probably right, and i dont see it happening. just explaining how i would see the theory behind it

Coby also probably won't cost $26.2MM AAV (which Devin is due the next 3 years after this one) to resign this summer in the new cap economics.

Devin aside, Spurs really got unlucky with his deal because it came before the new CBA completely turned everything on its head. His deal is kind of in the dead man's middle space where no one is getting deals as most of the league moves to a more polarizing contract structure.

How much do we think Peyton Watson will get in FA this summer?

Well, 26 won’t be the same as 25, a starved marketplace.

I think another thing you might start seeing is teams with cap room drop offers on RFAs, knowing that the rights holding team will likely balk at paying the player. In the past, they would have just matched, overpaying, and traded them within a year, but I think the market for such deals is dead, and you’d be stuck with him.

I'm definitely not in the mind to overpay for one of our own, but especially not for someone else's. I know there's alot of space, but I was wondering if the realities of this CBA might leave guys like him being underpaid? Then again, this is the NBA and it only takes one dumb GM to blow that hypothesis to hell...

In an ESPN article today titled "Trade questions for eight NBA title contenders; What each needs and what could be next", this was written about our Spurs.

Can we pause for a moment and acknowledge that ESPN is now lumping us in with "Title Contenders". They've witnessed the power of Wemby and we are the shiny new toy.

What they're missing: The Spurs have shot 3s at an average rate this season but still rank 17th in attempts and 18th in makes from beyond the arc. San Antonio has a variety of players who can capably space the court for Victor Wembanyama and playmakers Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper, but no feared shooter opponents are unwilling to leave on defense.

Certainly, San Antonio hopes Devin Vassell can be that kind of player. Vassell is a career 36.7 % 3-point shooter who has made as many as 2.7 per game, suggesting he'll probably improve on his current 34.7% accuracy. But adding an even better shooter alongside Vassell would make opponents think twice about unconventional defenses against Wembanyama that leave them exposed on the perimeter.

So far this season, only three teams have faced zone defense on more possessions than the Spurs, according to GeniusIQ tracking. -- Pelton

What they can pull off: Trading four first-round picks to acquire Fox should remove San Antonio from trade conversations. But with six first-round picks in the next seven years (two that can be traded), control of Atlanta's first-rounder in the next two years (a swap in 2026 and unprotected in 2027), three future pick swaps and 15 second-rounders, San Antonio has the draft capital to upgrade again. The Spurs also have $40 million in expiring contracts, including former first-round pick Jeremy Sochan. -- Marks

What's next for San Antonio? When San Antonio drafted what it considered to be one of the final players of its Wembanyama-centered rebuild, the mindset was to first find out what the Spurs have on the roster before making any drastic moves. Nothing has changed from that standpoint. In fact, the club added talent through the draft that it believes fits with Wembanyama (Castle, Harper and Carter Bryant). The Spurs also like the players they've acquired in trades and in free agency: speedy guard Fox, Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk. It's unlikely San Antonio will look around at the trade deadline, but don't count out the Spurs looking to add a potential role player who adds shooting. -- Michael C. Wright

The facts are a little off... we have 7 FRPs in the next 7 years (not six) and up to 4 can be traded (not 2).

Hopefully they're waiting for a fire sale from one of those bottom dwellers, snag a consistent 3 point shooter from them for Vassell, Biyombo, and a couple of the hundreds of the SRPs they've stashed for this reason.

Lamelo Ball is available now. Seems destined to be a king.

weird thing for Turner to say right after signing for 4/108?

Have they had a fallout?
LaMelo just said he was open to a trade. It seems like Kon, Sion, Kalkbrenner and McNeely have brought a more serious hooper vibe to the team. Just my amateur take.
Will be interesting to see what develops. Ja/LaMelo/Zion swap would be fun. Clippers might have interest in LaMelo.

I wish there would be someway to get in ss a 3rd team on what I think will be the upcoming Trae trade with Devin and/or Sochan and pull a couple shooters like Krejci and/or Kennard. A couple shooters like that would do wonders for this team.

Atlanta just signed Nickeil Alexander Walker as a free agent for NTMLE type money (technically they later framed it as a S&T into a trade exception, but whatever), and the Spurs signed Kornet for about 11 million. Combined, they're making about the same money Vassell is, and with the Spurs trending up, I'm pretty confident they'll pique the interest of lots of valuable role players in free agency. That's the cost of opportunity that often goes overlooked when talking about moving a contract like Vassell's for, admittedly, rather underwhelming value and expiring filler.

The only move I’d make anytime soon is something to upgrade 3rd string C. Whether that is for some SRPs or is a FA signing, I do not know. Micah Potter in Bismack’s spot would be fine.

Isn’t Olynyk providing quality C minutes? I like what he’s doing there

I view him as more of a PF, but he does fill in some of those minutes… albeit he’ll get abused on D one way or another. I guess getting clowned down low is better than giving up a wide open 3…

But I’d like to see more of a rim running 3rd stringer. Someone like… well, you know.

Actually Olynyk when healthy is providing decent minutes. Compare last years centers Wemby, Zollins and Biyombo to this years centers Wemby, Kornet, and Olynyk . I'm stunned we made it through last season at all.
All NBA players will get injured or need rest at some point (especially centers) but at least this year we have some decent backups, and in case of a real emergency we still have Biyombo. Big congrats to B. Wright for making center a priority this year, its clearly paying off in wins.

Biyambo was a much different player last year, much better.

Olynyk is Mamu, a plus offensive player who can’t stay in front of anyone or protect the rim on defense.

we should call up Nikola Mulitunov or Ryan Richards for that last center spot tbh

Robertas Javtokas, whateva happened there...
