Game Thread Spurs (60-19) vs Trailblazers (40-39) (Wed 04/08/2026) [8:30 CST]

yeah the immediate diagnosis was a contusion as opposed to a broken/fractured rib. contusions can be extremely painful and rib injuries tend to be more painful than most... but looks like a bullet has been dodged. he will probably still be in pain during round 1 of the playoffs but short of a direct blow to exactly the same spot, shouldnt be at too much risk for aggravation. its something else if you are a kickboxer with a contusion on your shin... you basically shoudnt compete at that point until its healed because if the high likelihood of direct contact at exactly the injured spot

tbh if it wasnt for the 65 game thing, good chance he'd just be shut down to allow it to heal as much as possible before round 1
I've had one before (contusion) and it was very painful to breathe when running around out there and certain movements were painful. You can play through it, but it's going to affect your game on offense. He's also going up against much, much better athletes that can easily aggravate it if hit on/near the same spot again. I wonder if there is some kind of vest he can wear so that it lessens the blow if he gets hit near the same spot again.

He's going to be wearing protection like Tyler Hero who wore a Flak Jacket coming back from his rib injury. That rib area will be targeted obviously. Especially getting elbowed off screens..
OK, cool. So a player has work a Flak Jacket. I feel better about it if he can wear something like that. Did it affect Hero's game/shooting wearing that jacket?

absolutely not. can just have some protective gear to avoid aggravation
Yeah, I'd opt for wearing protective gear. I don't want a repeat of that Memphis series where sitting out Manu for just a single game changed that whole series.

And still, I wonder, if the Spurs had a better backup center, could they have done this (sit him for a game or two?)?

you also know that if we match up with Phoenix, dillons brooks is going to target his ribs

Spurs currently outscoring opponents by 17 points per 100 possessions with Wemby on the court this season:

• 120.2 Offensive Rating (2nd)
• 103.2 Defensive Rating (1st)
• +17 Net Rating (1st)

MVP.

Hoping Champ can string some 3's together over the next 3 games tbh. He's at 193 made 3's for the year. Would be cool to se him become the first Spur to surpass 200 makes in a season.

Considering how horrible the Blazers looked in the 4th yesterday, he probably hits that mark tomorrow tbh.

Don't want to put bad juju in the air, but just for discussion's sake: how would people feel about our chances of taking down Phoenix/LAC without Wemby in round 1? Let's say he's still banged up and the risk of re-injury is fairly elevated still when round 1 starts...would you err on the side of caution in hopes that SA can take care of their 1st round opponent, or do you play Wemby and hope for the best?
Without Victor, we'd go from title contenders to beatable in round 1.

We could still win a round 1 series, but it could go either way.

Opposing players will even just hand check him on defense or swing that elbow backing him down on offense!
Depends how bad the contusion is, but if he's wearing a jacket, hits shouldn't be too much of an issue. It's actually going to hurt more if someone puts pressure on it.

Yeah seeing what happened to Wemby and the Spurs listing Castle as doubtful I’d just go ahead and punt tomorrows game, play everyone Friday and rest people again Sunday.

Smart to sit him. My guess is he plays 20 min against Dallas on Friday to meet his 65-game requirement and then they pull him, and then they sit he and the other starters against Denver on Sunday*.

Sit Castle and Wemby for this one, unleash Barnes and make Fox the deliberate centerpiece of the offense to try to work himself back into rhythm. Having #2 overall in the NBA with 3 games to play is a gift from the Basketball Gods to prep for the postseason.

Side note... kind of funny to me that Ingram and Miller are questionable - G League... isn't the G League season over? Are they questionable because there is an end-of-season pizza party at CiCi's they might need to attend?
