Game Thread Spurs (54-18) @ Grizzlies (24-47) (Wed 3/25/2026) [7:00PM CDT]

well, great to see the team playing so well, but i wouldn't mind a little bit less of staring down opponents and laughing after every dunk to be honest...... sorry to sound like a party pooper, but there's no shame on being dunked on trying to defend and no need to be cocky every time... and the announcer, this tobey guy, who is very good at his job by the way, but..... "he emasculated him ?" on the Wemby's dunk.... seriously ??

I guess I don't consider beating a team in the first round an accomplishment. Particularly since the Spurs did exactly as well without Tiago Splitter in the rotation as I said they would. The fact that Popovich tried to throw Splitter into the lineup in desperation once it was too late is just proof that I was correct.

I thought the same way. That 2011 team had an extremely shallow bench, had Tiago in the doghouse for no reason, the Turd Towers were a massive liability, Dick Jefferson was a career playoff choker/bad on defense, Gary Neal being in the thick of the rotation was a massive liability, and even George Hill was a poor matchup for that series (really his primary purpose on our team at the time was for getting under Kobe's skin). The big 3 were all playing injured and Manu had a broken arm and missed game 1. That team was just fool's gold from the very beginning of that season. And with Splitter on the bench they had no answer for both Gasol and Zeebo Randolph. Like, either turd tower against one of those two was an automatic mismatch and the Grit N Grind Grizzlies had a very specific halfcourt offensive gameplan that they stuck to religiously to their credit. Their offense had a fairly narrow margin for error because Tony Allen couldn't shoot jumpers worth a damn but he was essential to their defense, so they essentially were playing 4.5 on 5 every trip offensively, but Gasol, Conley and even Randolph were so damn good at executing that offense anyways, even though they darn near always took at least 15+ seconds off their shot clock (slowest pace in the NBA at that time).

That’s what I’m talking about. Now I’m sad I missed the game.

The defense is actually 2003-2005 levels of good when they try to be. I mean, the Grizzlies literally scored 4 points the first half of the first quarter. But then they let their foot off the gas, and Wemby going to the bench always hurts the defense badly and seems to be when the other teams score the majority of their points.

they're a bunch of kids, let them have their fun. If it keeps them confident then I'm all for it.

I sort of- agree-

But id be ok if they just save their best and unleash it on okc…then it would be appropriate to let okc have it imo

This team is just on a different plane of existence right now. It's not the shot-making, it's not even Wemby being dominant - they truly get into a "flow state" for stretches where they are coordinated as fuck on half-court play executions. It's crazy to see such a young and relatively inexperienced team put it together at this rate.

Folks complained about the 2nd Q but that's the team taking the foot off the pedal, deservedly or not. When they want it, they tap into that gear - fully playing off of Wemby's roll gravity, Castle and Harper's (and Fox's) driving gravity, and relying on their spaced-out shotmakers.... And just bury teams.

In the last what, 15 games? It seems they've finally realized how to utilize Wemby without even having to get him "touches" - it's been quite a while since I've groaned at a badly-executed entry pass to a high-posting Wemby. They're running completely different stuff with Wemby as a "true roll man" and it works too well because every single team is scared as fuck of letting Wemby anywhere near the rim.

It really is only a relative lack of playoff experience preventing me from seeing this group as championship favorites, tbh. Just can't imagine them getting beat 4 out of 7 by any other team. Just crazy, crazy, crazy stuff
I thought the same thing about the Spurs in 2012 when they won 20 straight. Look how that turned out.

I agree that when this team is in the zone, they’re really in the zone. I honestly believe they’re playing like the best team in the league right now. But I’ve come to learn that that doesn’t necessarily mean they will win the championship.

The only problem is, you might rather be the #2 seed than #1 in the West.

You might play the Lakers in the 2nd round rather than maybe Denver or Minny.
To me, the benefit of having home court in a potential Game 7 against OKC in the WCF outweighs any downside from a more difficult first round matchup. That literally could be the difference between winning or not winning a championship.

The difference is facing Denver or Lakers
