On the Spurs 3s during this game, I think the quality of the shots was better than when they chuck. Especially with Wemby, there are just times when he lazily defaults to the 3 and that drives me insane. I don't think that was the case in this game. He was shooting well, and they were daring him to shoot, so I want him to shoot in those type of situations. A lot of the other 3s were catch and shoot and not step backs or off the dribble early in the shot clock and I have no problem with the Spurs shooting those shots.
What a lot of people in the game threads fail to realize is the context that certain shots or deciions occur within. The Celtics were allowing the 3 ball and if they are collapsing the lane hard then you can't just keep trying to do that becuase that's how we get into our turn over ruts. And Boston is an awful team to do that against. The Spurs took what the defense gave but they did so in a way that they got good looks and didn't just rush down and chuck.
I wish we had an equivalent stat to xG in basketball (and maybe we do with the 2nd Spectrum stats but since none of us has access we'll never know) because I think that's a good inicator of shot quality in soccer and would be useful to have a quantified measure of shot quality for the Spurs. I thought the shots they took against Boston were fine and I'm ok with doing that even if we lose on the off night.
