Game Thread Spurs (46-17) vs Rockets (39-23) (Sun 03/08/26) [7:00PM CDT]

Damn this team is insane ever since putting Champ in the starting lineup
Nearly everyone here said HB can't/shouldn't keep starting. It was being talked about well before Champ was put into the starting lineup. When Julian first got into the starting lineup, he wasn't getting many points in some of those games, but his rebounding really stood out. Showed almost right away that he was much better at rebounding the ball than HB. Not sure why the coaching staff took so long to change things up.

I'd rather have CB than 2-3 good years of KD, tbh.
Yes, now that you mention it. Yes. I forget that the CB draft pick would have to have been traded to Phoenix as part of the package.

those physical metrics they showed on broadcast for amen are off the charts. Makes Steph look like danny ainge athletically
I don’t care about shit like that at all. Amen and Ausar are living examples of Charles Barkley’s deer trope. It’s a shame they didn’t go to college for one year and get NCAA coaching instead of fucking off with OTE. You can take away half of their offense by just playing back two or three steps.

The turning point was the day POP came to training center and talked to folks.

Since that day, you can see wemby being more vocal on D and O and team started to care of each other..

The beautiful game started coming back… Prior to that although we are getting wins, the rhythm wasn’t there.

How come the refs overlook most of the obvious elbows by Sengun STILL?
Those elbows are seriously blatant. How has the league not phone the Rockets to tell him to stop throwing them so blatantly?

I remember seeing pictures or him there. One or two of the players was sitting with him in the pics. When was that? Was the during the Spurs' slump?

Wemby sat and talked with him for a long time. So did Jeremy, like he was with his grandfather. Don't remember the others.

Pop's at the facility fairly regularly, I think. One of the commentators mentioned it the other night, saying Timmy picks him up and drives him in.

It’s after the loss to Hornets at start of FEB.

We are 5-5 something after that loss to Hornets.

Right from the next game I thought Wemby is alot vocal on both O and D. Team actually passing the ball to best available shot.

We literally shifted to next gear.

Thanks @Area 51.247 and @Wemby_Island
I didn't realize TD drives him in. I thought Pop was driving himself around at one point, or was that up to the restaurant incident? I'm guessing he can't anymore if TD is driving him in which is amazing of TD to do that.

Do you mean after that Hornets loss, the team was in a 5-5 stretch? That was around the time I kept saying the Spurs have to start winning to not be one of those pretending teams and start showing that they're serious about being a contender. I wasn't sure how it was going to go. Pretty pivotal point in the season really. Great observation in noticing the changes from that point on and what started happening for the Spurs to start making that turnaround. Some finer details you noticed that I didn't in regard to Victor being more vocal.

I'm so fucking tempted to log into my Spurstalk account just to bump that thread. My God.

Some of us did see it coming, is all I'll say... :st-smokin:
Tbf, pretty sure that thread was made before the 2023 lottery so at the time things looked pretty bleak. If Spurs didn't win the Wemby sweepstakes we're probably still in the lottery

KD really wishing the Spurs had shown him some love last summer...
Nah. KD is too principled to want to play on a team that junks up games.

"Tonight, we generated some good looks. We just couldn’t knock them down. I think that’s my emphasis: knowing how they’re going to junk the game up with some of their gimmick defenses, but also getting our guys who penetrate under control. It’s easier said than done,” Durant said.

I won't be fair because the argument was so flawed from the start - it completely focused on the "moment" (I markedly remember Gambit saying "the Rockets have Sengun, the Grizzlies have Ja, the Spurs have...??" - where are Sengun and Ja now for centerpieces?), and took no consideration to the quality of each team's FOs and their ability to actually follow through with a rebuild and turning to contention.

The Spurs hadn't yet landed Wemby, but were already underway with their tanking strategy, and have since made a number of great picks to support him (Rockettes passing on Castle for Reed is a very relevant example here). I obviously won't discredit Wemby's protagonism in our rebuild, but I don't particularly doubt that if we'd landed Brandon Miller or even Amen Thompson, the Spurs would've put a better roster around them than HOU or MEM have for their stars. That thread is a perfect example of only looking at the trees and missing the forest around them.

Ja Morant in particular - he would've been chewed out in SanAn for that guns bullshit... The first time it happened, lol. What wasted talent.

I shudder to think about this scenario... but had we ended up with one of those two (or worse, Scoot), then I think we'd be talking about Peterson/Boozer/Dyabantsa/Wilson right now and justifiably so.

I pray to the FSM that we have Wemby instead.

Tomorrow game might be preview of NBA finals.

I watched Celts games alot recently. They are not a great team in paint. But man they are loaded with 5-6 Julian Champaine’s who can rain 3’s.

Ehh, with Castle and Harper on the mix, added to Brandon Miller? That's a serviceable C away from making the playoffs IMO, but you're right, luckily not something we have to worry about. It's also a nice opportunity to point out that it has taken Castle and Harper to get here, it's not just the WembyShow, and those are 2 great draft picks by the FO (and yes I give credit for ""obvious"" picks, ever since the Luka draft fiasco especially so).

But hey, I'm not going back there to bump the thread for now, so it's all good :st-lol:
