Game Thread Spurs (40-16) vs Pistons (42-13) (Mon 02/23/26) [6:00 PM CST] on Peacock

If we're talking spacing, they're similar to the Rockets.
Non-shooting big and a Thompson twin that will get the Simmons treatment.
But unlike the Rockets, there's no way we can put Wemby on Thompson because Duren is going to bully anyone else and Cade would cook them in PNR.
We need Castle/Wemby defense for Cade/Duren.

Pistons are a great team, but I'm honestly not that worried about teams that can't get hot from 3 and run us out of the building.
We did well agains the Thunder and the Rockets, I expect more of the same in Detroit.
I'm not saying we'll win the game for sure, but we'll at least be in it until the end.

And I'd say it's a potential statement game for Wemby in MVP race. If he drops a ridiculous statline beating the best record in the league on the road, he'll have to be taken into consideration.

Wonder if NBC will show the game on cable or if subscribing to Peacock is our only bet.

This might be the matchup for some French Vanilla.

Kornet can't play more than ~25 minutes on the highest level, doesn't have the legs for it.
Wemby's limit since the injury has been 34. I think this is the game for him to play 36 minutes.
Meaning we can get 13 or so minutes of French Vanilla if needed.

If Kornet really is breaking down, then maybe drafting a player who can play some or all minutes at center would be wiser. That would bring Hannes or Cenac up in my draft rankings.

I odn't think he's breaking down, it's just that he never played serious minutes in his career.
He's an elite backup when he plays backup minutes, but his effectiveness goes down as the minutes go up.
He averaged just 27mpg while Wemby was out. Mitch would've surely played him 30+ if Kornet could do it and stay effective.

But yeah, I agree that we should get a project backup big to develop and have him take over from Kornet in a couple of years.
Ideally we get that player in the second round.
Kornet is turning 31 this year, it's not like he's young.

In theory we should match up well against this pistons team
Agreed. We have a few guys to throw at Cade and deal with his physicality, including Castle, Vassell, Harper, Bryant. They have some wings we could cheat off of in Ausar and Holland.

I could see Durens physicality giving wemby some fits on the boards though

I saw somewhere that the Pistons are pretty weak on defensive rebounding %.

I'll pretend it's 2005 game 7! It would be killer to see these two teams in the Final. Albeit that series almost gave me a heart-attack and I was much younger!

Best spurs final series tbh...even though the 2014 finals revenge was sweet.

Manu playing like fmvp in the first 2 games...then getting blown out in game 3 and 4.

Tight game 5 that went into OT and Horry's heroics saved us. After the left wing 3 by Horry, Rip Hamilton buzzer shot on Tony almost gave me a heart attack. Lucky the shot was not close but I remember Rip had the height advantage and Tony height did not really give him a close contest...

Not sure what happened in game 6 but we just lost.

Game 7, Pop shortened the rotation to 7 players and Brent Barry was playing the backup PG. Down by 9 pts in the 3Q but Timmy came up huge and started the run that brought us back...Manu came up huge as well and hit some timely 3 to pull away.

I think we low-key break up Pistons as Larry Brown left them after the loss. Ben Wallace left them after the 2006 playoff loss to Heat.

First real litmus test for the team in a hot minute. We should match up well enough with the Pistons to take this, but I'm a bit concerned about Detroit being overly physical with Wemby. Hope he's well-rested for the game!
