Player Sochan's Extension Watch

the spurs paid murray coming off a torn ACL because he showed what he could be. even if jeremy was completely healthy, with the body of evidence we have about his play, he wouldnt be extension worthy.

the caveat is if he was healthy enough to play in eurobasket and really balled out there and showed something new, and continued that in camp/preseason... there'd be a conversation. but im not a big believer that in the 2 offseason months prior to eurobasket he developed his game more than he has in the past 3 years
All good points, though Murray had a one time injury whereas Jeremy is always hurt (though that didn't stop Vassell from getting extended either)

Thank God. It’s possible he still has a future with the team but no reason to overpay him at all.

Hope he has a good season tbh. Nice to see the FO seemingly weaponize upcoming RFA.

So glad Jeremy is going to have to sing for his supper. If he signs with us this summer, he will have earned it and made me shut my pie hole. My money is not on that outcome.

I think the page has turned on the Spurs having to bend over backwards to keep players happy and the Spurs reputation intact. The Wemby Effect is real, as are several of the players around him. It’s a strong possibility that this summer attracts more talented players to replace Sochan.

Also, my read on Sochan's body language and zoned out expression on the bench seemed to indicate this was the expected outcome.

this likely means that any progress Sochan made over the summer was not enough to impress the coaches

I would have been fine with an MLE-sized contract but I doubt Sochan gets offered more than that in RFA next summer. I hope Sochan continues to improve and makes matching an MLE deal from another team worthwhile next summer.
Didn’t you constantly say he was going to be making 20-25 million a year and kept telling me that offering him more than the MLE was the only way to keep him.

Whelp it seems the Spurs agreed with Ole KA rather than all the other armchair experts

Dude shot fade away and pull up 3s all summer and posted them like that was supposed to impress anybody. Spurs saw that shit and were like wtf are you doing Rodman. Park your ass in the corner and learn how to do a proper goose neck

I’ve got not doubt it’s the sideways fish kick out he does with his legs on the jumpshot.

I’m rooting for Sochan, but I’m not holding my breath in that 3 point shot coming around.

That’s the thing I noticed too. How is that even possible, that jumping straight up and down is too much to ask? It also just leaves very little room for debate about the whole thing. If your legs are doing that, your energy transfer is obviously imbalanced and I don’t even know anything about basketball.

They must be able to size this up at practice. Eurobasket would have been a minor piece of the puzzle, probably.

I have always struggled with grasping the fact that someone can make the NBA and spend three years in the NBA and still not be able to shoot a jump shot with basic proper form that doesn’t look like it’s the first time they’ve every shot a basketball.

It’s bizarre but yea.

Lil General catching strays! Give our mans a break, he's only like 4 feet tall!

Jeremy might get an offer sheet from one of these bum ass teams (probably not either LA team), then spend his entire career being a loser

Won't be anyone's first option though, plenty of higher profile RFAs to fight for that cap space. In any case, if he raises his profile enough it'll be good news for the Spurs, either to match or to squeeze assets from interested teams by the threat of doing so.

Sign and trade could work too

Curious to hear your guys thoughts on what kind of impact not coming to terms on an extension will have this season. Specifically speaking to how many resources (ie playing time) will be spent on Sochan. One point of view is that we could spoon feed him minutes even if the roster fit ain't great in order to show case him and perhaps drive his value up a bit for trade purposes. Or perhaps we go the other way and essentially move on from Sochan a year early leaving him with scraps of playing time.

Obviously, if he has something to offer in the way of winning basketball I would expect him to get playing time. I would argue though that has not been the case as our best stretches of basketball the past 2 seasons have "coincidentally" occurred when Sochan was out due to injury. The roster fit for Sochan is clunky due to our lack of shooting and now it appears MatFO has perhaps even less incentive than ever to play him.

The Spurs are known for trying to do right by their guys so I doubt they would intentionally not give Sochan the opportunity to show his value this year but at what point does that conflict with our pursuit of wins?

I imagine Jeremy will get the same opportunity Lonnie did when they didn't extend him.

Lonnie Year 3 - 60 GP 38 GS 25.4 MPG 11.2 PPG on .523 TS%
Lonnie Year 4 - 70 GP 6 GS 23.0 MPG 12.1 PPG on .512 TS%

I have this lasting image of Sohan playing in the FBC against the Knicks last season. He was working the post, but just getting absolutely clobbered by bigger players. I remember thinking “there’s no way this dude can sustain that kind of physicality over the next few years”. Not sure how he fits on this team. Maybe as a 3 and D player but he’s gotta work on the three.

Nicely done by Wright, thats another win for him. Now is not the time to extend players with blatant flaws, many injuries and someone who's shown little signs of improvement in skill, shooting and IQ in 3 seasons.

MATFO have had it somewhat easy with Victor being on a rookie deal while having a team with low expectations. The era of low expectations has come to an end and money will be tight from here on. They just extended Fox, then It'll be Victors turn, then Castle, then Harper if they both pan out well.

Wright has gotta be smart, there's no room for loyalty contracts now with the CBA and especially for players with such glaring flaws. Consider this non extension a win for Wright. It's a big year for a bunch of players if they have hopes of getting paid and sticking around
