Player Shams: Biyombo Returns on One Year Deal

Olynyk is 5th highest paid player on the team, cmon @scott :st-lol:
Don't get me wrong... Kelly also sucks and should be replaced (I wanted him sent off at the deadline to utilize his expiring salary)... but Kelly sucking doesn't excuse Biyombo being the worst player in the league.

Just wanted to reiterate this.
Potter is putting up 7.5/4.3/1.5 + 0.7 stocks in under 20mpg on .464/.375/.881 splits. TS% would be 2nd on the team behind Luke, Reb% 4th behind KJ, he is 5th on the Pacers in WS in only 408 minutes. This guy is not a stud, low ceiling but an actual NBA ceiling.
This isn't an I told you so thing at all, he just as easily could've proven a stiff--but he had exponentially more potential to be useful than say Ingram.
Time to stop roster "good locker room" only guys, emergency 6th string backups (JMac has 0 chance to play meaningful mins ahead of Fox/Steph/Harp/KJ/DV), absolute nothing talents (fucking Harrison Ingram).

We came into the yr with two guys- BB and Ingram-- that have no chance to NBA players moving forward. Sochan, Oly, LW3 & DJG all had at least theoretical upside. JMac, maybe not but he could shoot and 2 of our PGs were questions marks coming in. But moving forward they aren't.

Reaves, Reid, Caruso, VanVleet, Dort, McConnell= undrafted guys.
Brooks, Camara, Herb Jones= 2nd rounders.
Stop fucking drafting the Nunezs and Ingrams, and rostering BBs or even JMac, start fucking swinging and rostering someone with some upside. LW3 and DJG at least have theoretical upside/elite potential. We have a free roster spot, go fucking get someone with some upside. We have now cleared all the tanking flotsam and have a real team/roles for the first time in years.

We now have plenty of chemistry, plenty of vets, plenty emergency overlap. Go fucking sign someone for free with at least marginal upside, cuz sometimes that turns into Caruso or Dort or Camara.
Go fucking grab Highsmith for Sochan's spot, go find literally anyone that can catch a ball to replace BB, go buy Ingram a ticket to China where he may be able to make a team.
Great post. You left of your list the guy who we don't need to look any further than to prove that we should be taking these end-of-roster spots more seriously... the guy who is ON OUR FUCKING TEAM... CHAMP.

"Herr derr role players don't matter who cares about the 14th man on the roster" some will say while literally in a separate post talk about the extension Champ has earned.

There was a nice stretch run where we picked up Champ, Bassey and Mamu... we need to get back to that kind of stuff at the end of the roster. Even when we took a flyer on Stanley Johnson he looked like a useful NBA player.

Can't believe y'all gonna make me stan for Biyombo but I'll play MATFO's advocate tbh.

There's just a fundamental difference between being a player and an assistant coach. It can be a similar relationship but it's not just the same when you're talking about road trips, locker room shit, etc. Hearing shit from a teammate is just different than hearing them from an "assistant coach" tbh. It's why guys like Udonis Haslem / Nick Collison were given token roster spots long after their utility as an actual NBA player expired.

On the court, Bismack is absolutely terrible and clearly shouldn't be seeing any meaningful mins. But MATFO think highly enough of his off the court impact that he's worth a roster spot.

The bigger issue is Olynyk getting paid 13mil to wave a towel and BWrong not turning his expiring into a useful player at the deadline tbh.
I think the better argument for having Biyombo in this Haslem role could be made if we took our two-ways more seriously. There has only been 1 game this season where a two-way was used as anything more than charity minutes, the MEM game where DJG showed up big only to be rewarded by never playing another meaningful minute again.

We're in second place in the west so I'm not saying that we should be going out of our way to feature two ways... but if you're going to have useless Biyombo taking a roster spot to do what you're talking about... then at least have a two-C you can call up to eat up minutes from time to time.

As for Kelly, I'm not going to defend him. 90% of his usefulness expired once the trade deadline struck... no arguments there. But he's actually still a better player than Biyombo. If we were forced to play either of these guys, I'll take Kelly 11 times out of 10. I can't even trust Biyombo to win a jump ball over Kobe Bufkin for gods sake.

Agreed, the two way pipeline has been pretty ass the last few years. I don't really understand why DJG hasn't gotten more run since he's better than Lindy/Jordan. Assuming it's some "get over himself" bs from the FO.

But again, worrying about Biyombo while Kelly is on the roster making 6x more is like worrying about the hole in your shirt after you get shot in the chest tbh :st-lol:

Here's my last statement on a Kelly v Biyombo discussion:

Same, i can't argue Olynyk vs Bismack anymore. :st-lol:

There's certainly a lot going on other than on-court usefulness why we have Jeremy getting booted off the team whilst my man Bismack is still warming up the seats. The ship has obviously sailed but Jeremy vs. Bismack is not even a comparison, as anachronistic as Jeremy's seemed vis-a-vis the roster/identity we have going.

I still yell BIYOMBOOOOO to my heart's delight every time mofo gets to check in, though. Just rolls off the tongue, I don't know.

Love you Bruno, but what kind of backwoods logic is this?!?

"Biyombo being so terrible wouldn't be as bad if someone else weren't also terrible?"

Man it's too bad Kelly isn't Jokic, because then I might have a shot to be the Spurs' 15th man. :st-lol:

Biyombo hasn't been signed to be a productive player. Everybody saw how bad he was last season. He has been signed as a locker room vet presence like Kyle Lowry with Sixers, Garrett Temple with Raptors or Jeff Green with Rockets.

^ That's fine, but then it doesn't make sense to compound that by throwing multiple two-way contract slots in the garbage, per usual.

Jones-Garcia is the only one who might have a future in the league, but with his season ending injury, they now have a whopping 4 of 18 roster spots that are unplayable.

I agree. Keeping Sochan, instead of waiving him for nothing, would've been ideal over Bismack. Bismack and Kelly bring absolutely nothing to the table.

for sure. i think this was just them "doing right" by sochan and letting him get a clearer path to playing time. may bite us in the ass if we get hurt

Indeed. Beginning of free agency they'd lose him anyhow because they'd bid against themselves or not at all. I hate that he was waived over worse talent but Spurs always do good by their players regardless and I can't fault them especially since the Spurs clearly didn't see Sochan in their future plans.

The end of our bench is soooo bad. I cringe in the games that we're up big and I'd see Bimbo, Kelly O., McLovin, Sochan and CB out on the floor. That has to be the worst lineup in the league on a +/- basis.

Carter Bryant gets a pass, and now Sochan is gone. I'd love to see another reasonable move or two to fill out the bench in a way that could actually help this team in a pinch in this coming post season. (And I'm not sure an injured aging Plumlee qualifies as an upgrade.)

JMac/Lindy/Kelly/Bismack/Plumdog garbage time lineups are going to be LIT
