Player Shams: Biyombo Returns on One Year Deal

Are we still feeling good about this? Last year he seemed capable-ish. This year he looks like he forgot how to play basketball.

He is fine as the end of the bench C who should be playing only in blowout minutes. As Wemby's primary backup he is god awful

But I have to retract what I said in the OP because as a third option C he is ass. I'd imagine Kornet/Olynyk/Sochan would all be ahead of him for mins at C so as a 5th option I guess he's fine but man he definitely seems to have regressed majorly from last season

I thought he would be ok in that role, but I'm reconsidering:
1) Wemby is awesome but will probably miss 10/15 games every regular season for load management (keeping him fresh for the playoffs) and minor issues if nothing else (contusions, ankle tweaks, muscle strains, etc).
2) Kornet is a more than capable backup but he'll be expected to play more games and MPG than he ever has, and it's already been proven some of that will be alongside Wemby.
3) Biyombo is appalling, in the non Wemby/Kornet minutes there's no rim protection at all and the defense collapses spectacularly
As a result, I think it'd be a good idea to find a third string center who can actually be halfway decent, to fill this and other needs (3&D wings) is where I think Spurs will need to part with some of their overpaid bench depth.
PS: we could have used Kalkbrenner :(

He's supposed to be like the 14th or 15th guy on the bench. Maybe we should have kept Bassey but the problem is injuries.

He does seem to have lost a step compared to last year, but he's also being stuck into a bad situation.

As a fourth or fifth big (or a backup on a tanking team), he's fine. Now that we have expectations of actually winning games, his poor play is being magnified, and it would've been hard to predict that three of the four guys ahead of him (Kornet, Olynyk, Sochan) would all be missing extended games all at the same time.

He's fine for a fourth center. Olynyk is the third string center. You're not getting a second center for a non-guaranteed one year deal so unrealistic to expect him to be that guy.

Absolutely terrible but show me a end of the bench big who isn't. He is literally what, the 4th or 5th string big. I can't really even blame the Spurs cause it's not realistic to think you are going to have 3 bigs out all at the same time. As they come back Bismack won't see the floor.

Reading now the initial reactions for the first time is quite hilarious to be honest :ROFLMAO:

I remember last season posting about how bad he was and that he only looked good because we'd be starved of any half-decent C play for so long...

And somehow he's gotten worse

His per 36 numbers: 1.6 PPG, 4.1 RB, 0 Blocks (he hasn't blocked 1 shot yet), 7.4 Fouls.

Somehow some people here thought this was a good signing :st-lol:

Dear God, how in the world can you get 1.6 points per 36 mins? I would have thought that you'd accidentally tip in a shot or something.

He doesn't look to shoot...like at all. 2 attempts in 44 minutes played over 5 games.

Which is a problem since he doesn't even give the illusion of being a threat when he is on the floor...and he isn't very good at the other stuff he should be doing like screen/rolling and rebounding.

He looks lost half the time and takes up tons of space on the floor. He def looked better the last half of last season.

Said this during pre-season, but I'd rather have whatever the heck a Micah Potter is than this guy

Said the same myself. Micah Potter has a 3 at least and didn't clog the lane. I wanted youth but the Spurs wanted consistency even if BB is a year older.

Oh Biz is definitely consistent alright, consistently terrible.

I am probably the only guy, but I was excited to have Potter. I think I actually recommended getting him last year as he seems like a big who can reasonably shoot and not be a ridiculously negative on D.

this is the exact reason why I was mad we traded our second round pick. Meanwhile Kalkbrenner is starting on the Hornets putting up 9 and 7, but we needed more cash considerations.

at least last year it was a respectable 10ppg, 11rpg, 1.5blocks, 1 steal and 3.5 fouls per 36

At least Mitch seems to recognize it quickly. There have already been a couple games where Biyombo gets a short stint in the first half and sucks, then is glued to the bench in the second for smaller lineups.

I love Pop, but I feel like he was the type to stick with his rotations despite the results.

So far, I'm loving Mitch's rotations. We were forever stuck in vet mode with Pop and never giving enough leash to our youth to make the mistakes that will help them learn to correct in the future. Pop became stale way before Duncan retired unfortunately.
