Game Thread Playoffs Round 2, Game 1: Spurs vs Timberwolves (0-0) (Mon 05/04/2026) [8:30 CDT]

Outside the obvious picks he did well selecting CB at 14, Keldon at 29, and Tre Jones at 41. However, there's been far more misses than hits tbh.
That's every team in every sport though lol no team hits on every draft

The fact that we got Wemby, Castle, and then Harper in consecutive drafts is fucking miraculous.

100%. Watch it again. Harper grabs the rebound with about 8 seconds and immediately looks at coach. Fox and Julian also look at Mitch while standing still. I believe Wemby even. Harper Passes to Wemby and they realize they need to run and Wemby rushes it back to Harper who starts his run with 5 seconds left. 3 seconds wasted. Those are crucial.
I dunno why some think it’s best to run and no timeout, if you wanna run with 8 seconds left anyway 1) Minnesota have 5 guys behind the ball on defense they’re not exactly down a man or lost and scrambling, 2) is 8 seconds really enough to get a great shot off full court? It probably, but in the playoffs that’s not a risk I take and especially not after they already wasted 3 seconds looking kinda confused. 3) if mitch wanted to run his players should have been well aware of that.
IMO Call the timeout and try to set up a 2 or 3 from the timeout even if it’s against a set defense or Gobert is in it’s not like Gobert was a nightmare matchup today. Make or miss I rather a time out. Julian’s look was free but a step back three pointer from him isn’t the best shot you want no matter what they say. I’d much rather if Fox or Harper had the ball at that moment
I guess I would have even been able to live with Fox taking the shot instead. I agree with you. I think it was a poor decision to not call a timeout. It ended up being an OK look, but I don't believe it'st he correct thing to do.

Now if the Spurs had multiple plays drilled in practice for these scenarios, great, but it looks like they didn't. Wasting three second not knowing what to do is crazy.

Thanks for going back and looking at it. I didn't want to watch it again. Did Harper look gassed to you?

That’s the thing. We’re only going to be able to have this kind of depth when Wemby/castle/harper are on rookie contracts. I feel like not enough people understand this.
We won’t have the depth but that’s countered by Wemby, Harper and castle being in their prime. Right now all three are just fractions of what they are going to end up being. This is arguably the worst that trio is going to be for the next decade

We can point fingers in a lot of different directions, but Mitch has got to be better. Losing your challenge early in the game with the score 11-8 is middle school decision-making. Every championship coach I've ever seen in the past would have called a TO on that last possession. We called a TO to beat Phoenix at that buzzer during the regular season, so I don't know why we would change in the playoffs. Lastly, no doubt in my mind Pop would of Hack a Shacked Gobert outside of 2mins when we were down by nine.

Absolutely, but BWrong fell ass backwards into those picks. He doesn't need to hit on every pick, but for the Spurs to maintain a top-tier rotation he's going to have to hit on several. Hopefully the Spurs can get lucky on some of these upcoming pick swaps.

Lol you damn well know Wemby still gonna be chucking 3's and his paint game will still be barging in from the 3-point line.
Don't hate the player, hate the game. lol That's just how basketball is being played now. It's almost (d)evolved) into a 3-point shooting contest.

exactly the front office does nothing but sell second rounders that they could have gotten serviceable PF or backup Center #3

But remember the young guys we have are going to get better. This is not a fully formed squad in terms of the talent.
Hopefully the coaching staff will go to summer school to get better too in order to “guide” these players and put them in the best position to win and improve collectively.

The organization prides itself on a family type culture. Hence management is unlikely to make the right call to ditch the bitch… I mean Mitch. I’ll be shocked if they decide to hire an experienced head coach.
Yeah, well, I wanted Mike Malone or Taylor Jenkins if I had a pick of a coach. People on ST turned me off Mike Malone saying he's a nutcase, but I still would have taken him. Denver should have fired Calvin Booth if the two were clashing that badly. I'd never pick the GM over a Championship winning coach. I'd get rid of the GM first and see how it goes from there before deciding on the HC. And I think Denver win against the Wolves in round 1 if MM was still their coach. He would have been on their asses all season about playing better defense and I think they would have been a better defensive team under him. Maybe not top 5 or anything like that, but still, he would have made them a better defensive team than the porous one they were this season.

Spurs also passed on Wemby's best friend Reynaud twice in the second round, though that might've been because he wanted to go to a situation where he would play minutes out of the gate tbh.
He liked NorCal because of his time at Stanford supposedly. So I’m less miffed about missing that one.

I've been a big fan of Mitch tbh.

That being said, he's clearly gotten outcoached, badly, these playoffs.

Diawara was also picked 51st by Charlotte who a few people here were high on in the draft iirc.

Yeah, that surprised me.

Ehhh hindsight is 20/20

The least the org can do is bring an offensive minded person to join this staff.

But what I keep saying, how mad could he have been if the Spurs drafted him? How mad could he have been playing with his friend and a great organization/team with a chance to have a great season? If the Spurs picked him, really, how mad could he have been? If he was mad at that, he didn't deserve to be in the NBA. The Spurs should have told him they want to pick him if he's there on the board. Second rounders dictating where they go is BS.

Mitch was supposedly a great offensive coach with the nickname the Maestro early in his career for knowing everything that's going on out there as a PG. He's never looked anything close to that to me.

Yea and harper is from new york and wouldnt mind playing in new york lol...Like teams give a shit where they wanna be.We had the
chance to get him and traded the pick away like dumbasses.Would of been a steal for us.Big miss from us.

Fuck reynaud tbh, draft him and let him tank his stock if he refused to play.

We laugh at Atlanta for bending over for Sarr but think that scrub’s excuse of liking north cal is acceptable.

Ok im just mad at the loss but the principle still applies
