Game Thread Playoffs Round 1, Game 5: Spurs vs Blazers (3-1) (Tue 04/28/2026) [8:00 CDT]

I'd trade for Avdija for his whistle if nothing else. That said, kid is good tbh. Might not be #1 option on a contender good, but definitely a strong 2nd option. They have plenty of draft capital going forward with some nice young(ish) pieces so they could swing a trade for a star when someone inevitably becomes available.

Finally Champ started just hauling them up without hesitation. He was gun shy the previous games, and wasn’t really hunting for his shots. But tonight was different.

I would’ve put CB in when the Blazers was making their run at the 4th quarter. CB can up the physicality when some of Spurs players started being complacent. There shouldn’t be night when CB gets no minutes at all. It could stun that confidence that he already started to build

Lastly, I wish Spurs could’ve kept Cissoco. The kid is physical, can shoot the 3 and plays a lot of defense. He was Sochan was supposed to be

Honestly, the way the refs were calling the game CB would've done more harm than good tbh. It's not like the Guests did anything special; when Clingan and Cissoko were hitting their threes you just had to tip your cap. The issue was the team not running any sets for long portions of the second half on top of the refs taking the Spurs out of any rhythm. Would have been a good time for Mitch to go after the officials and pick up a T.

Props to Fox for an awesome fourth quarter, but I do find it weird that he doesn't do this for us consistently enough.. His days in Sacramento he was a menace driving to the paint and getting layups and buckets near the rim, but he doesn't do that nearly as often as he should and can. That's my main issue with Fox this season is that he settles for quite a few bad or contested jumpers, when his whole career has been built on speed and quickness driving to the lane to the rim. He did that tonight in the fourth quarter and I was glad to see it as he has rarely done that in San Antonio. We're gonna need more of this kind of Fox moving forward!

This is the best thing that can happen to these young guys.
Can't fuck around even when up 30.
I didn't get to watch much of the second half (just the end of the 4th where Fox took over). What happened before then? At half time, I thought the Spurs were all good. Didn't expect to see the Blazers made it a game? How close did they get?

Beside some lackadaisical play. I’m really pissed at Mitch and the staff about not putting Carter in who’s having a great series.
I was wondering WTF is going on in the first half with Carter not playing. WTF is Mitch doing?

Great win to close out the series, but doesn't sound like the team had a very good second half.
I guess the question is “is it out of the way”? That’s 4 games in a row now out with wild inconsistencies and point swings both ways, and we have struggled with that most of the season.

Yeah, darn. I thought the Spurs had gotten it in the first half when I was watching. Looks like they're still having issues being consistent within the same game. Can't have that if they're looking to make the WCF and beyond. Have to stop doing that and clean that up.

From the time David Robinson came to the Spurs to the time Tim Duncan came to the Spurs, the team only won five playoff series. They were upset literally every year.

I never take a playoff series win for granted ever. I'm always so relieved and grateful when the Spurs manage to advance.
Do you mean before D-Rob was on the Spurs they only one 5 playoffs series? I'm confused with the wording.

Loving the series win. Not thrilled with Wemby being reduced almost to role player status on this game, though.
Did he look to be a team player and then just sort of got out of rhythm, or was the team not looking for him at all during the game?

Wemby looks stoked man, guy just loves winning.
Swear he’s gonna be in unconsolable tears and enter depression if we lose a series

GOD it feels good to win a series again :st-cry: still believe Fox reads BB and we willed him into these performances. My fav part of the series was still Dylan’s break our party G3.

GSG
Dylan's game's the best because it was the biggest win of the series (Steph, great game 3 too), but then again Fox's past two games are great too. And Victors game 1 and second half of game 4, great too. Darn, Spurs have lots of great players. Just need to be more consistent throughout games if they really want to make WCF and further.

Shaq trying to bring back that bullshit about Admiral not giving him an autograph but EJ called him out.
Shaq is a fucking loser. I was just talking about him possibly lying about his free throw shooting excuse (big hands on why he was so poor) at the start of this thread or another thread. Looks like he's back at it again.

It was totally fine. The offense was cooking with him providing the gravity. There was no need to involve him more and there were no signs that Wemby was not fine with it. He was engaged as ever.

All was fine when the offense was rolling and everybody was hitting shots, but when the offense got stalled, in the 2nd half, it would have been nice to see some sets designed to get Wemby the ball near the basket.

I think it was a good experience for our mostly young team to realize it takes patience and composure to close out a series. So in that regard, the Blazers not just accepting the loss and climbing back into the game might have been positive in the longer run.
Going forward in the playoffs, I hope Castle isn't automatically guaranteed this big a role offensively. He needs to settle down a little, play with more poise on both ends of the floor. Wemby seemed to lack in energy at times but still was mostly dominant - even though he wasn't integrated into the offensive flow consistently enough. Fox was great, playing smart and decisive basketball for most of the game. I also liked how Champagnie got more shots than in some of the recent games. Vassell was fine, Kornet solid but a bit underwhelming, and Keldon still struggled scoring at and around the basket. Harper's ability to beat his man and get to the rim is so valuable!

Winning a playoff series. Wemby has officially accomplished more in his NBA career than Tracy McGrady ever did. Put him in the Hall of Fame.
