I am probably the most vocal of Sochan supporters over the last two years or so, and I still think he is someone who can be very useful in the playoffs (yes, his shooting sucks, but his perimeter defence is really good and versatile), but oddly enough, this year I am not as high on him as his rebounding and defence has dropped off somewhat.
So far, in a very small sample, Sochan seems to have cut out 10 feet to 3pt line shots entirely. Of the 27 shots he took, 10 of them are 3 pters, 3 are from 3 to 10 feet, and the remaining 14 are all from 0-3 feet. This isn't his highest percentage of shot attempts from 0-3 feet in his career (last year, when he shot 54.6% of his shots from 0-3, was), or he is on track to shoot more 3 pters than he ever has (he is shooting 4.4 3PA per 100, where as he shot 4.9 his 2nd year and 4.4 his rookie year), it's just that he is shooting a lot less shots. He is shooting 12 FGA per 100/8.9 per 36, which is about 30% less than the first 3 years (17.1 FGA/100 and 12.9/36 mins). Not sure if it's because his role has shrunk on offence, he doesn't know what is going on in offence, or he is instructed to get out of the way.
The bad thing is, if he's shooting less, well wouldn't he be doing more in other areas? Not really, he is rebounding less (a lot less, especially offensive rebounds), his assists has stayed pretty much the same, he is turning the ball over a lot more despite his usage rate dropping a lot, he isn't protecting the paint more, he is fouling a lot more, and the only positive so far is that he is going to the line at a higher rate (only because he is shooting less FGs) and shooting better.
Despite the improvement in shooting (again, on a VERY small sample size), I felt he regressed in everything else, and those are the things that made Sochan Sochan.
