Nobody on the Spurs rebounded worth a damn. If they hadn’t given up so many second shot points they’d have won walking away even with the horrible turnovers. I lay none of the rebounding issues on Sochan, he was covering Luka much of the time which took him out of rebounding position.

I bet there is a prop vet out there on this. Something like o/u .5 makes a game.

As OP said, Sochan shooting the 3-ball at 33% on 3 3FGA should be step 1 for him as a goal. With his size and defensive skills and ability to guard 1-4 like he can, that is a $20M per year player.

Then after that, however long it takes, step 2 would be to get to 36% which right on league average and on about 3 to 5 attempts per game. Sochan hitting those numbers is a $25M per year player.

It’s not even realistic to talk about anything above league average. I’d be more than happy as a Spurs fan if he could peak at those numbers.

Sochans rebounding is fine, he’s always been solid there. Least of my concerns with him. Career DRB% is right around 17%.

Last season here are some players in the 16-18% range for DRB%

Siakam
Alex Sarr
Tobias Harris
Franz Wagner
Kevin Durant
Julius Randle
Cade Cunningham

Leaving anyone's feelings for Sochan aside, I'd argue that the Spurs don't have room for any $20-25MM players, unless its only on a two year deal before whatever Castle earns kicks in or if Vassell is traded. So at this point is he really just playing to maximize his trade value?

Those stats don't tell the story tho.

I agree Sochan's rebounding has always been fine, it's not an issue like other aspects of his game.

However, when he's facing athletic 4s-5s, he just can't exist and that's when we notice his limited athleticism and his lack of rebounding

He's really shining when he defends backcourt players and goes for offensive rebounds

Man let’s not go crazy. Step 2 is NAW and he makes $16 a year.

he sucked today, playing like a chicken. on the defensive end though, man... guarding durant like few others can.

I don't want to hear a damn thing about how Sochan's shot improved in the offseason. The hitch was as bad as I've ever seen it tonight. I like him, but I don't think the Spurs can afford to extend him and right now I would be looking to trade him. He's not a bad player, but he's not going to work on this team without a 3 point shot and man that shot is BAD.

I want him to do well, but Spurs need him to be able to shoot better. He'll be unplayable in big games and moments if he can't improve his shot. That'd be too bad because he brings some good things on the defensive end.

Combine the lack of shooting with the low IQ and it's a bad problem to have

In no world should he be extended for this team with soon to be championship aspirations.

We're ok for now, but before you know it Victor will be up for a Max extension, things after that are going to get dicey. Then it'll be Castles turn for an extension, then itll be Harpers turn. The most important player on the team is cheap as chips right now but soon enough he'll rightfully be the most expensive probably in the league.

Sochan's hitch you mentioned, the terrible shooting %, the low IQ, the running around like the energiser bunny on D with no plan. It's all bad.

With Fox and the extended and maxed Victor on the payroll Brian Wright is gonna have to get creative, he'll have to make decisions which include not signing players who don't fit the team

Summer workouts looking like a complete waste of time

He is the backup 5 at the moment. Which makes this tracking a little weird. It’s not exactly in his hands.

…but obviously he still has no idea how a jump shot works.

I was told all offseason how hard he worked on his shot and how much it improved. So I think this tracker is fair. Even Centers shoot 3s nowadays. And once Kornet is back Sochan is no longer a Center

Can we get him a rebound tracker while we're at it? I was told he's a good rebounder.

Fair enough.

Though it only took 2 games to know that he still is a terrible shooter. And we already knew he was going to be terrible because nobody in human history made that much progress on a jump shot in one summer while they also had a calf injury. But I can’t really throw stones as far as piling on this guy.

With all due respect to Mr @KobesAchilles... was anyone in our community actually buying those summer workout videos? Maybe over on Reddit, but it seems like we've all remained extremely skeptical. I'd even say that BaselineBums overall has the most realistic sentiment (what outsides might perceive as negative) on Sochan. Seems like the overwhelming consensus was not to extend and that no one was believing in the Instagam Shooter.
