Well, the All-Star Game is behind us, and with that comes what many consider to be the unofficial start of the NBA season. The holidays are behind us, football is over, and now is the time when casual fans start paying attention and the playoff picture starts to come into focus.

With that, I thought it was time to dust off the old spreadsheet and start watching the Spurs Magic Numbers. Past few seasons, we were sadly chasing Tragic Numbers in hopes of better draft odds, but the tank has been parked back in in the bunker and the Spurs are ready to start making some noise.

Coming into this season, the general consensus was that securing a playoff berth would be considered a success, but this young and spunky squad seems to have bigger plans. Believe it or not, that includes chasing the #1 seed. At the break, the Spurs currently sit second in the West and third overall in the NBA.

So without further ado, I present the Spurs Magic Numbers for 2026:

Notes and Thoughts:

-These numbers do take tiebreakers into account. So far, the Spurs have clinched their tiebreaker with the Mavs, Pelicans, Jazz, Lakers, and most importantly, the Thunder. Spurs have lost their tiebreaker with the Timberwolves.

-I won't be updating this daily (at least, not yet), but will provide periodic updates as things start to shake into place. I’m also starting with only the Western Conference.

-It's only mid-February, and the Spurs are only one win (or Kings loss) away from starting to scratch teams off their hit list.

So this is how many games that teams have to lose before being eliminated from contention? I'm confused

The magic number represents how many Spurs wins (or opponent losses) that San Antonio needs to finish ahead of that opponent in the standings.

For a bit more explanation

As soon as 5 other teams' numbers drop to zero, the Spurs are guaranteed to make the play-in

2 more zeros (7 total) means the Spurs are at worst in the 7/8 portion of the play-in

Another 2 more zeros (9 total) mean the Spurs will be in the playoffs guaranteed (top 6 seed)

Yet 2 more zeros (11 total) mean the Spurs get HCA in round 1 (top 4 seed)

A further 2 zeros (13 total) mean the Spurs would get HCA in round 2 if they win round 1 (top 2 seed)

One last zero (14 total, completing the list) means the Spurs would have the #1 seed in the West

Magic number to get 50 wins.

-As Magic Numbers tend to work, Spurs gained 2 points against Phoenix by beating them last night.

-With losses by Denver, Golden State, and Sacramento, Spurs also made up two points against those teams.

-Speaking of Sacramento...:st-lol: LOL Kangs :st-lol: Fox and Unc send their regards.

I'm gonna keep updating this with magic numbers like race to the 1 seed, HCA in the first round, playoff berth etc. But just nice to be close to 50 wins for the first time since like 2017.
Yeah we're definitely spoiled

-Still a ways to go but over the past few days, the Spurs have built some more cushion in the top of the chart (including vs Rockets, Nuggets, Lakers, Suns, Wolves, and Clips). Still have not made up any ground on the Thunder.

-Down go le Birds of le Bayou

-Along the way, Spurs happened to mosey into the 40-before-20 club so according to Phil Jackson, we are legitimate champion contenders...so we got that going for us, which is nice

Magic number to 50 wins.

Was very stupid to not re-sign him, especially with Kerr retiring. Our backup plans (to not getting Kidd from the Nets) were literally Jason Hart, Alex Garcia, and Shane Heal? Stupid PATFO. Bringing back Jackson and Claxton should have been the priorities, not pandering for some shiny pie in the sky object that was unlikely to come here?

The 2003 championship was the best euphoria, but the 2003 offseason was perhaps the worst in the history of PATFO. Cost Duncan the title of repeat champion. We could have probably won five in a row or at least 4 or 5.

@timtonymanu I prefer Smitty over Pat Mills, but not a terrible choice I guess because they both were winners. And Kornet's game is oddly a lot like Fabricio's game, not just the jersey number!

-Spurs have managed to close the Magic Number gap with the Thunder to within 1, still gonna need some help from them

-The Jazz has been silenced, Mavericks play the Thunder tomorrow so it seems like they are being put out to pasture soon

-As @Seventyniner eloquently outlined, the Spurs are very close to locking down a play-in spot (at the very worst)

-The Grizzles have fizzled. Spurs are now guaranteed to make the play-in, so all of our preseason hopes and dreams have come true.

-We are quickly honing in on the Clippers and Trailblazers which would lock down top 8 spot, but obviously playoffs and HCA should be the goal now.

-Spurs have 3 games remaining against the Nuggets and 2 against the Clippers, so those will be valuable.

-Spurs play the Rockets next which is also a big game. They would outright own the tiebreaker with a win on Sunday, so a win is worth 3 points. Otherwise it goes to division record where the Spurs have a healthy margin, but better to just put it in the bag.

1 more win until we can start up a 50 win season streak again

and .. just need at most 6 more wins to secure a playoff spot/top 6 seed.

GO SPURS GO!!!

-The Warriors have been slain and the Blazers have hit the trail. Spurs have a chance to put the Clippers out of their misery tomorrow, and it's looking like Kawhi could be unavailable, which was the style at the time.

-The Thunder simply refuse to lose games, so catching the #1 spot seems unlikely but still not impossible. As I type this, they currently have a comfortable lead against Minnesota in the 4th, so Spurs will get some help today either way.

-Regardless of what anybody else does, the Spurs can lock up the #2 seed with 8 more wins!

-As has been much ballyhooed, the Spurs are officially back in the playoffs for the first time since 2019! Get your dancing shoes on.

-With two more wins, the Spurs can guarantee a top three spot. Four wins locks up the two-seed and HCA through the first two rounds. Spurs could basically play .500 basketball the rest of the way and still cruise right in behind the Thunder.

- Houston, we no longer have a problem. The Spurs have now clinched a top 4 spot in the West.

- With 10 games left, we are on the home stretch and the Spurs actually still have a long-shot at the best record in the NBA. To those ends, I have added our friends in the East who are still alive in the Magic Standings. Detroit is the only who is poised to make things interesting.
