Player BREAKING: Wemby Expected to Miss Multiple Weeks with Left Calf Strain; **UPDATE** Wemby Expected to Return Tomorrow for NBA Cup Semifinals vs. OKC

They're not built like Gumby either tbh.
Curry had two ankle surgeries and missed significant time in seasons before they won their first title. There was concern about his durability and he was on the trade market, supposedly. Seem to remember he went to work with a trainer to build up his lower legs and ankles.

Since Leonard's degenerative condition took effect, the Spurs have had terrible injury luck with their best young talent, especially when they're in the midst of making a leap.

They should be looking to replace Biyombo yesterday with a live body and need to focus on drafting a big for once too.

Good backup bigs were a concern going into the draft and there were ones there that maybe could have been had (Kalkbrenner being one of them that I really would have liked if Raynaud didn't want to be away from Stanford), yet for whatever reason, they passed on it. Seems to me, they're a bit clueless on what the team needs with all the guards they got. Not sure what they're trying to do with all the PGs, SGs/pseudo small forwards they're trying to play at SF.

Sometimes it feels like the NBA regular season is like a suggestive dance where what the public really wants to see is sublimated for just the right amount of time.

Why is there are a huge gap between the Pelicans and wizards game?
That’s the time that the InSeason Tournament goes to Vegas, and everyone else gets two seemingly random games scheduled.

Olynyk & Sohan can fill-in at C somewhat but they need an another true center STAT! Especially if this goes 2+ weeks. Might as well start scouring the free agents now. Bismack is done…..

?? We signed Kornet, and traded for Olynik. I think they knew they needed backup center help. At some point, players good enough to play don’t want to be 3rd string, so you’re left with the Bismacks of the world for that spot.

I think even though Harper’s happened first, he’ll be out longer than Vic. He was in a boot right after the game, and Victor isn’t in one at all.
Listening to Zach Lowe podcast yesterday it was mentioned that the boot doesn’t mean much negatively anymore. It used to be sign of a serious injury, nowadays it is used to just prevent movement and flex to maximize healing in the first couple days. The example cited was Jalen Brunson turning his ankle/being put in a boot the other day yet being listed as day to day with a grade 1 sprain.

Vic may just not have been in a boot due to not doing an MRI initially.

It's actually the opposite. With everybody shooting 3's and playing fast as possible at all 3 levels ( high school, college, pro's) basketball players move WAY more now than they did even just 20 years ago. If you just look up stuff like distance traveled and dribbles per game now compared to say the late 90's the numbers barely reflect it's the same sport being played.

Bigs used to spend most of their time in the paint playing foul line down. Now every big has to at least show on a pick n roll no matter where it is, if not just straight up switch. As bad as the Kings are look at how many times Luke had to guard in space yesterday. Imagine somebody like Ostertag or Dudley trying to do that, they wouldn't last 20 games.

Also the fact that now we know enough about some injuries leading to other injuries, so when you get the first one you sit so you don't get the second one. I imagine plenty of players back in the 80's and 90's played with calf strains and that's why they 65 on their 4th ankle surgery and haven't been able to walk straight since they were 40.
i think that argument can be made to a degree in basketball but we are still seeing way more nagging soft tissue injuries keeping players out in the NFL at the same time, as both leagues have traded toward scaling down practice and offseason conditioning

Rather have Wiseman than Bismack

This sucks. Get better soon Vic.

Kalkbrenner would have had no choice if the Spurs drafted him. What's he going to do, sit out? We're not talking free agents here. Drafted players don't usually get a say where they go.

Luke Kornet hasn't played big minutes throughout his career to prove either way if he's durable or not. Sure, they probably had him as a target in free agency, but what if they didn't get him? They passed on being able to draft a big like Kalkbrenner. Olynyk wasn't even on the radar during the draft and they wouldn't have known they'd trade for him. He also is coming off of an injury and hasn't played many games the past few years, so again, not proven a reliable option lately. Hopefully he has a bounce back season as it looks like we're going to need it.

Great explanation. That's what I thought. It's just to limit movement to allow better chance to heal quicker. Doesn't mean it's super serious. Back in the day, it usually was a sign of serious injury.

It's just the eye test that Dylan's looked worse because we saw it happen in the game. Victor's, no one even noticed. Maybe he didn't even feel it until after the game.

Not to get all Armchair Hematologist, but I wonder if they're holding him out so long to make sure there is no deep vein thrombosis type of situation. Obviously, they want to be cautious for possible Achilles stuff moreso, but I'm just trying to figure out all the angles.

it is literally just most teams aren't going to mess around with Calf Strains anymore.

Like I said in another thread the Spurs were blessed with Duncan in the sense that during his first 6 years he only missed 9 games. He was super durable. To no fault of his own I don't think Victor's body is ever going to be durable enough where he can play close to 82 games. On a sidenote this is why the Spurs paid a lot of money for a guy like Fox so he can carry the team while Victor gets these type of injuries.

I remember that BPodz play with the unnatural leg sweep but even worse was right after that how he got crouched behind Victor's legs as Vic fell. Trying to trap a knee in hyper extension. I'm gonna be watching that Bpodz closely now.

Call it the Haliburton effect and there have been other examples so teams are exercising an abundance of caution.

Is there any video of that? I'm really starting to think Steve Kerr is telling his guys to do this shit.

This is a real kick to the nuts.

CSB: I’m old and was hiking and camping in New Mexico. Got a Charlie horse so bad laying in my tent one night that I stained my calf. Calf strains are real. I was limping around at least 3 weeks.

It's good to hear from people that have had calf injuries. It shows they're not a joke. How long did it take for it to come good? I guess the ones I had must have been really mild then as I was still able to play basketball with them. I do remember walking around/limping a tiny bit when at work/doing day to day stuff, but usually it wasn't too bad when warmed up.
