What are you listening to right now?

you mean 91

91 only... blood sugar / achtung baby / out of time / nevermind / ten / metalica black album / use of illusion / temple of the dog / badmotorfinger ...

not sure what happened in 91 but it is the greatest musical year ever
Nah I still feel good about saying 90. try listening to the second half of Nevermind. its an album with several "greatest hits" tier songs and some all-timer bangers, and they certainly reach higher highs than Wolfmother, but i dont think the balance of the album really holds up tbh. i think metallica black is a worthy entry though

i just think Woflmother is that good. then the band basically split up after their debut album and not much thats come from Stockdale and whats left of the band has come close to recapturing that magic. like i said, Wolfmother album is my scorching hot take, but i'll stand by it

Last year first weekend in October I went to Iron Maiden in San Diego and then Gojira, Spiritbox opening for Korn on Saturday. Wasn’t much there for Korn. That fascination died out in the early 2000s. But getting to see Spiritbox for the first time plus Gojira for a third, especially fresh off their Olympic showcasing was incredible.

Love the classics like Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, Anthrax, and enjoy a lot of Pantera and Slayer, but really into new groove Metal with Sleep Token and Spiritbox, and especially Silent Planet and Bad Omens. IMO, Gojira is my favorite modern Metal band.
I'm a huge fan of Gojira as well - I'm honestly surprised more bands have mimicked their sound

I highly recommend you celebrate their whole discography. Sundowning has some bangers, and you might really like Gods.
I'm hit or miss with them... some of their stuff I definitely like other stuff loses me...

I'm not into the whole gatekeeping scene and playing the "is this really metal" game. It's metal enough, and it's introducing a lot of new people into heavy music. I'm all for it.

Here's some blues seasoned with San Antonio. Saw Neal play at a little dive bar on the north side of SA back in the 90s (Wings??... It was on one of those artery streets running North-South, San Pedro, McCullough, Blanco, other). Great guitar player, and a helluva nice guy too.

On my way to New York City, but wound up in San Antone
I'm down here in Texas, I'm on my own
And I don't get the blues, when I'm stoned

I respect your love for Wolfmother tbh.. but objectively.. nevermind, 10 of pearl jam, achtung baby, blood sugar, out of time are game changing kind of album, albums that define or redefine a genre or so successful that you cannot compare. Now some albums talk to you in such a way they are right there in your personnal top 5 or 10. I have that with suicidal tendencies the art of rebelion for instance, a top 10 all time only in my personnal list.

Never understood that debate, nor find it really interesting. I'm unhealthily obsessed with them becuase it's just damn good music - which is all that (should) matter(s)

Agreed. There are just metal elitists out there (a group I'm not part of nor care to be)

Was listening to this podcast and the guy attributed at least some of this to the way music sales was tracked. Previously it was just some estimates of sales and record stores would always overestimate the popular main stream stuff. But when they started real sales data based on barcodes, the numbers were accurate and it turned out alternative music and country music sell much more than previously expected, which then gave the labels incentives to market them heavily, which brings them to more people. Not sure if that change itself added the boosters on alternative music but that helps.

Been listening to Prince Paul lately. He was the mastermind of the sound behind De La Souls incredible debut album Three Feet High and Rising, and think this album Prince Among Thieves is such a great work. The whole album is the story of an aspiring rapper and his gangster friend trying to put together a demo for a meeting he has with Rza.

Also love this remix Dan the Automator did for Beautiful Night from Prince Paul's first album

Dan the Automator and DJ QBert killed this shit on the instrumental version of Dr Octagon's album (like this version better than the one on the main album)
