My sister and wife are wanting to plan out some trip to take with the kids this winter during one of the long weekends, maybe around President's day, MLK day, or something like that.

Anyway they've been talking about going somewhere in the South as something we haven't really done much of, and somewhat settled on either New Orleans or somewhere in Texas. They brought up Austin as a place to visit, and while I'm sure that's nice, I somewhat cheekily said lets do a San Antonio trip, showed them pictures of the riverwalk and they were actually surprised at how nice it looked.

We're all still trying to pin down a location. What are some selling points on doing an Austin vs San Antonio trip. And if the latter, is there literally anything to do other than the Riverwalk? Something kids would get a kick out of?

For real though President's Day is way better than MLK Day because January is peak cedar pollen season (same shit in Austin too). If it affects you it can be really nasty and you won't know until you get here. December 2021 thought I had COVID but tested negative twice on PCR, turned out it was cedar pollen making my throat feel like I gargled with razor blades and filling my sinuses to shit. A month later got the same shit again and thought it was just the cedar pollen, nope, tested positive on PCR. By mid February the cedar season really winds down. Then again games are definitely better around MLK as you have Milwaukee on the 15th and Minnesota on the 17th of January vs around Presidents Day you don't have a game until the 19th against Phoenix, and it's in Austin.

I don't know WTF anyone would do in San Antonio for more than a couple of days tbh. The Alamo and the museum are kind of cool, Riverwalk is a nice walk once, and the missions are nice to visit. Most of the stuff I like to do for fun though is a ways out of town, like Enchanted Rock is a fun walkup, Lost Maples has some nice hiking, there is some amazing BBQ if you go up to Luling (City Market) and/or Lockhart (Blacks, Smitty's, Kreuz Market) with all those places being open 100+ years. But you're talking 50-100 mile drives each way from San Antonio. And none of that hiking is anywhere near as good as the shit you grew up around in LA like San Jacinto or San Gorgonio. Could see a Space X Starship launch at South Padre Island if you time it right and get lucky, though you won't get to see it blow up most likely since that shit always seems to happen over Turks/Caicos lol. That's like a 5 or 6 hour drive from San Antonio though so would be more like a location to move on to for a couple of nights after staying in SA to check a game. I have planned out like 6 or 7 trips to go see them but have only managed to catch a launch once since they get scrubbed all the time, but at least only one of the scrubs was after I had already driven there.

Might get a kick out of all the German shit in Fredricksburg which is a reasonable daytrip from either San Antonio or Austin.

would austin be any better for a 3-4 day visit?

Personally for a 3 night visit I'd probably fly into San Antonio to hang out at the Alamo, the Riverwalk. and catch a game, then rent a car next day and head down to South Padre Island for a couple of nights at Texas' best beaches and then fly back out of Brownsville. Though maybe that's a weird itinerary in the winter on second thought lol. Gulf of Mexico is way warmer than LA area water though so the water temps in winter at South Padre won't be much different than summer water temps at LA beaches.
