Player The restricted-age video store section of Dylan Harper

I think what is being missed here is how much the media feel themselves to be the gate keepers of what is fair and what is foul in NBA awards. Victor was CLEARLY the best defensive player on the planet his rookie year, but since no rookie had ever won the award, they decided to continue that, and came up with shit like we were a bad defensive team. We were, but not with Vic on the floor, illustrating even MORE why he should have won the award.

There has never been a team with 3 consecutive RoY award winners, and I don’t see them having an appetite to break that tradition.

Weren't the Spurs like 6th, 7th rated defense or so when Victor was on the court his rookie year, but almost dead last when he was off? I saw some stat like that and thought how is he not DPoY?

I think they were top 5 with him on the floor. All the more reason to give him the DPOY as a rookie. I believe they were dead last with him off the floor.

Yeah, that's what I thought/remember. Once I saw that, it couldn't have been more clear cut, yet, like you said, they probably didn't want to give it to a rookie, which sucked.

The awards are a complete joke. Vic didn’t win because the overall defense was bad, but yet the Spur that anchored the perennial top 3 defense in the league for 20 years never won one.

But Ben Wallace won 4 because he blocked shit into the 3rd row and had cool hair.

Dwight Howard…..

Note: Ben Wallace definitely deserved to win multiples, but so did Timmy.

You could argue minute for minute Harper has been the best rookie

was about to comment about Ben but looks like you added that note. yeah... ben was both swatting shots and reboudning everything while also anchoring an absolutely elite defense.

Dwight was closer to what we've seen from Wemby, in that he was the one guy dragging an otherwise awful defensive unit to competence. rashard lewis, turkoglu, jj redick, .... not great defenders. Pietrus was a pretty good defender but thats about it. Nelson was ok defensively but they also went to the finals with Rafer Alston when Nelson was hurt lol

First game where you can say oh yeah Harper is a rookie and that’s a compliment btw

Thought he played great in the 1st half...making use of Wemby's gravity to drive to the hoop.

2nd half his shots were not falling and had a few possession get pickpocket by OKC...

But he still play good D throughout his time on the court

Is there a backstory / some insider info on who was instrumental in recommending Dylan to the Spurs?
Like when GNob and Parker were drafted sure RC got his name on the sign and good for him. But wasn't Presti or ___ really the ones who spotted at least one of them?

Have you heard anything in the HEB aisle or his Harpers dad being NBA mean he was on everyones radar?

Regardless i am in love with how he plays. 19 year old with playing style skills of a 30 year old perennial All Star.

The recommendation was that he was #2 in almost every mock draft, and we had the #2 pick.

NBA player sons do have a High hit rate, even when they’re not top prospects. See: Brunson, Jalen. Picked in the second round, now an All Star.

As said, he was widely known before his college season started. Even despite an odd fit -- the Spurs having two players already at his position -- it was a no-brainer, although I'm sure they did a lot of due diligence, asking around about him and meeting with him personally. But it was never really in doubt.

Also worth mentioning that if reporting is to be believed, the Spurs were offered significant draft compensation to trade down (Sixers reportedly dangled their 3rd pick + multiple future 1sts for example, fair to say similar was offered by Brooklyn/Washington/Utah) and yet the Spurs held steady.

The Spurs were locked in on Harper early in the process (after the lottery hit).

Unsubstantiated, but I heard that Wright was shopping at HEB and overheard some customers talking about the HEB Primo Picks food items, which prompted a discussion of the Spurs.

Some accounts say the customer said, while eyeing the Primo Pick blue corn tortilla chips, something to the effect of: "Nah, they better not pick another mother fucking Primo. They got the #2 pick! Just pick the guy that's awesome. Shiiit...quit dicking around. My cousin Rudy likes to show his junk. I guess I should tell him to try out for the Spurs. You know, right?!!"

Other rumors suggest that at this moment Wright had a lightbulb moment that he no longer had to pick shitty players to show, paradoxically, how smart he is.

It was a real turning point for the franchise at Aisle 11.

One of the silver linings in tonight's loss to the Knicks if the revelation of Harper's defense! And he sank four 3s.

Not even a silver lining, but a huge message to everyone.

Castle and Harper will be ready in no time.
If our current role players can't keep up, we're going to need some new role players sooner than expected.

Harper looking more and more like a complete player. We are spoiled to have him and Castle as the future of our backcourt.

Coming here to pay respects to my fav Spur, what an effort tonight, kid’s got the dawg in him. It’s like the anthesis of Wemby, I just always feel like something good is gonna happen when he’s around lol just cool calm and controlled all the time, always making the smart plays, and he’s still a teenager.

He is also currently my favorite Spur. Oddly enough I look forward to seeing him on the floor more so than Victor. There's just something about him and the way he impacts the game that is special to see.
