I think what is being missed here is how much the media feel themselves to be the gate keepers of what is fair and what is foul in NBA awards. Victor was CLEARLY the best defensive player on the planet his rookie year,but since no rookie had ever won the award,they decided to continue that, and came up with shit like we were a bad defensive team. We were, but not with Vic on the floor, illustrating even MORE why he should have won the award.

There has never been a team with 3 consecutive RoY award winners, and I don’t see them having an appetite to break that tradition.

I think they were top 5 with him on the floor. All the more reason to give him the DPOY as a rookie. I believe they were dead last with him off the floor.

Yeah, that's what I thought/remember. Once I saw that, it couldn't have been more clear cut, yet, like you said, they probably didn't want to give it to a rookie, which sucked.

was about to comment about Ben but looks like you added that note. yeah... ben was both swatting shots and reboudning everything while also anchoring an absolutely elite defense.

Dwight was closer to what we've seen from Wemby, in that he was the one guy dragging an otherwise awful defensive unit to competence. rashard lewis, turkoglu, jj redick, .... not great defenders. Pietrus was a pretty good defender but thats about it. Nelson was ok defensively but they also went to the finals with Rafer Alston when Nelson was hurt lol

Thought he played great in the 1st half...making use of Wemby's gravity to drive to the hoop.

2nd half his shots were not falling and had a few possession get pickpocket by OKC...

But he still play good D throughout his time on the court

The recommendation was that he was #2 in almost every mock draft, and we had the #2 pick.

NBA player sons do have a High hit rate, even when they’re not top prospects. See: Brunson, Jalen. Picked in the second round, now an All Star.

As said, he was widely known before his college season started. Even despite an odd fit -- the Spurs having two players already at his position -- it was a no-brainer, although I'm sure they did a lot of due diligence, asking around about him and meeting with him personally. But it was never really in doubt.

Also worth mentioning that if reporting is to be believed, the Spurs were offered significant draft compensation to trade down (Sixers reportedly dangled their 3rd pick + multiple future 1sts for example, fair to say similar was offered by Brooklyn/Washington/Utah) and yet the Spurs held steady.

The Spurs were locked in on Harper early in the process (after the lottery hit).

Unsubstantiated, but I heard that Wright was shopping at HEB and overheard some customers talking about the HEB Primo Picks food items, which prompted a discussion of the Spurs.

Some accounts say the customer said, while eyeing the Primo Pick blue corn tortilla chips, something to the effect of: "Nah, they better not pick another mother fucking Primo. They got the #2 pick! Just pick the guy that's awesome. Shiiit...quit dicking around. My cousin Rudy likes to show his junk. I guess I should tell him to try out for the Spurs. You know, right?!!"

He is also currently my favorite Spur. Oddly enough I look forward to seeing him on the floor more so than Victor. There's just something about him and the way he impacts the game that is special to see.
