Cog in the machine. People don't understand how much we use him as a decoy. He's almost always part of any Wemby/Fox pick & roll action, screening and then popping out to the 3-point line. Teams know they have to guard him tightly, so he just creates a ton of space for those 2 by moving off the ball. Then when teams focus on shutting down Wemby/Fox/Castle you can just ride Devin. What are they gonna do? Put Duncan Robinson on him?

Also if there's one good thing he learned from Kobe, it's showing up in big games.

Devin is our chess peice.

when our O sucks he is the one that gets you timely bucket. He will take off lot of pressure from our main players (Wemby/Steph and Fox).

He is one of our best perimeter D as well.

Man this team has been constructed in right way.

We need to keep this core intact as much as possible.

Holt has been on record that they are preparing to pay it. Also before the trade deadline about 20 NBA teams were in the tax. Most of them got out of it with deadline trades, but the majority of teams started the season being a luxury tax team.

Not necessarily salary/apron concerns but that will certainly be a factor as bigger extensions for Wemby/Castle/Champagnie loom. Just a matter of how the roster will evolve as guys like Harper/Bryant continue to develop tbh.

Devin is a good outside shooter, not a great one. Good defender but not a great one. His ability to act as a release valve for the offense has been pretty huge this year but can the absence of that be mitigated by Harper's continued progression? Time will tell.

If the team is lucky enough to continue their success these next few years, hard decisions will have to be made to keep the core guys intact. I'm sure not sure if Devin doesn't end up being one of those tough casualties tbh.

having the MLE is a huge asset for contending teams to continue adding legitimate rotation players. when you get into the tax, you only get the lesser TPMLE, and when you get to the second apron, you lose that too

While Vassell is doing better this year in terms of defending harder and making timely shots, his shot selection is not the most efficient. I am sure it is because the paint is a crowded place and this is what he should do, but this year, he is shooting only 8% of this FG from 0-3, 7% from 3-10. His shots from 10-16 is higher than ever at 18%, 16-3P is 3rd highest (12.5% in his rookie year and 13% 2 years ago) at 11%, His FG% from 10-16 and 16-3P is incredible (53% and 49% respectively) but his finishes in the paint are pretty bad now. His 3P% is alright. One thing is that he is going back to creating way less shots, where 64% of his 2P and 94% of 3Ps were assisted, this is closer to his first two years when he showed the most promise as a player. He can still create shots in a pinch, but that weapon is rightfully used as necessary.

its probably unsustainable but part of why his percentages are higher seem to be the quality of those shots is not bad. he's not putting on extended dribbling moves and taking contested turnaround shots anymore. he's curling off screens, taking a dribble to beat closeouts, and then pulling up when he has an open window

I don't see Vassell going anywhere. Johnson and him will have to take pay cuts as Wembanyama, Champagnie, Castle and Harper get raises on extensions, but Fox likely being traded within' a few years should accommodate that.

Crazy how we think everybody will just take paycuts for the younger players to succeed and thrive. If he's still shooting at a high clip by the 28-29 season, that man is going to get paid and go to the highest bidder if it's not the Spurs. These guys careers don't last forever, so money should definitelybe their #1 priority.

I'm not so much as talking about taking less than their worth or market value as I am a pay cut.

I'm also betting nearly a decade of sweat equity, perennial championship contention and hopefully a championship by that point will make them more amendable to taking slightly less if necessary.
