Player The "It's My Time" Busted Clocktower of Devin Vassell

Instead, true to the threads title Vassell very early in the shot clock and without even looking to pass, he forced a drive and lost the ball off his knee out of bounds for the turnover. Unforgivable sin? No not in a vacuum. But this guy and his lack of situational awareness continues to scream My Time. Kobme.

I actually didn't mind the idea, he just botched it. They were taking turns on Reed Sheppard at that point.

Include in trade package please.
I know it's only 1 (more) play, but I've seen enough. He refuses to be rehabbed.

Last night at a key juncture we had climbed back from what seemed like a never ending 10 pt Houston lead. Momentum is clearly turning Spurs way and another hoop with continue the 180 degree swing.

1 rebound in about 50 minutes the last two games.
Willingness to block out when ball is in air and position for potential rebound position can be had? 1 out of 10.
He and Fox both D- help Defense - positioning for rebounds.

Saver would be if this is lack of coaching but regardless, this My Time shit has to end. Not part of the Wemby Championship Era program.
I'm not as down on Devin as he works his way back... but I think it is fair to wonder if Devin might be available in trade discussions should an unexpected opportunity for a bigger move present itself.

And yet, they go from playing ~.500 ball without him to looking really good when he is back. He really looks like maybe he's starting to figure it out.

How many times a year do we say that's he's starting to figure it out

Our guys were so used to losing, even arguably stealthily tanking, that’s going to take time to bring in that winning culture. The mini-series with OKC helps, even the two-games win over DAL. It’s learning to trust the process and not deviating especially when down. It’s difficult when sometimes the biggest culprit is Wemby himself. So it takes time of the team winning together, but imo they are getting there. They’re having success, enjoying the wins when they execute correctly. Even Wemby nor Fox didn’t have to score much in a lopsided win over DAL, however it takes to win as a team. They will figure it out, including Vassell.

Count Devin was the MVP today

We need to come to terms with the fact that Vassell is more important to our offense than we would want to admit. That's way we have to sometimes live with his 4-14 nights because the spacing he provides is critical to the other ball handling guards who all three (Fox,Castle, Harper) range from mediocre to bad shooters.

His decent handle and midrange game gives the Spurs that fourth guard they need when their young PGs aren't having good offensive games. He and Champ have similar roles on the team, but Vassell is much more dangerous putting the ball on the floor than Julian is. Defenses have to honor Dev getting hand-offs or handling in the PnR in a way they don't have to with the other wings.

His biggest swing factor is if he can maintain defensive intensity. He's not going to be asked to lock down a side of the court like Wemby or take the main role of guarding the best opposing scorer like Castle or Bryant. But he is going to be asked to pay attention to his man, play passing lanes, get hands out under the rim and hold his own if he gets a switch. That's a lot of work, but it's what would take the Spurs from a tough out to a real peer to the contenders.

When Vassell is playing like he did against the Pistons, he is definitely a valuable player and worth his contract: solid fundamentals, no-nonsense demeanor, staying focused (especially on the defensive end), making defensive plays while staying within the scheme, capable of being anything from the second to fourth option offensively on a given night, being able to handle some playmaking duties and to put the ball on the floor when needed.
Of course, he has to be a consistent enough scoring threat for all that to really come together.

Cog in the machine. People don't understand how much we use him as a decoy. He's almost always part of any Wemby/Fox pick & roll action, screening and then popping out to the 3-point line. Teams know they have to guard him tightly, so he just creates a ton of space for those 2 by moving off the ball. Then when teams focus on shutting down Wemby/Fox/Castle you can just ride Devin. What are they gonna do? Put Duncan Robinson on him?

Also if there's one good thing he learned from Kobe, it's showing up in big games.

Kobe quit in multiple elimination games then got his ass carried in a Game 7 win against the Celtics. Falling for that Mamba Propaganda :st-lol:

Kobe showed up when his shot was falling. The rest of the time he just took low percentage shots at a high rate. The glory play over the winning play.

Congrats on the monthly "I can carry my own weight" game. We'll need more than a handful of these a year to go anywhere.
Carry my own weight? He carried the whole fucking team last night.
Do you expect him to average 25 a game in this system?
