Player The "It's My Time" Busted Clocktower of Devin Vassell

Everyone going to have bad games but vassels ups and downs feel like what you get from role players making 10-15 mil you expect more for ones making 25m salary that's the reality.

I don't hate the guy just expect more for 25m in the days of 1st and 2nd aprons
We’re not in either apron, so I don’t understand the hand wringing.

We are close and we have upcoming contracts want to sell high it is not this year it the next three years sorry he is not a 25m player. Now if they trade him in the summer so be it but I looking long term not just this year

His contract was structured very deliberately.

$29M,$27M,$27M,$24.6M,$27M

Now, keep in mind that as the cap rises, the aprons also rise, but salaries are set by contract . Every year, his contract is a smaller % of the cap. There’s a definite escape hatch in the summer of 2028, when his salary drops. That will be the summer that Castle’s extension kicks in.

There’s no reason to panic or fret about his deal. It becomes a better contract every year,

No comparison was ever made, just making a point that dinging a player, ANY player, for two isolated missed threes is dumb by pointing out that the GOAT shooter missed more than he made.
Already conceded the point, but since you and your strawmen seem determined to dig the topic back up...

Are you actually attempting to suggest that all the criticism thrown at Devin Vassell since he signed his contract is due to "two isolated missed threes"? Lol and lmao.

More than one of you seems to think that Vassell has somehow earned the benefit of the doubt that Curry has earned, because not a single soul on this planet has ever suggested that Devin Vassell should be making more shots than he misses. In fact, a big part of the criticism he receives has zero to do with his shooting. I've seen far more praise for his defense than for his field goal percentage.

The offense will always be inconsistent for a 4th/5th option. They key for him is to lock on defensively. If he can replicate what he did last night every game, he becomes untouchable. He played SGA as good as anybody I've seen.
Vassell got paid as prospective 3rd option on a contender, but as a player he clearly grades out as 4th or 5th option, .i.e. a role player. He shored up some of his lost value this year. Hopefully he keeps it up, especially in the playoffs, so Spurs have flexibility and leverage if they contemplate moving on from him whether for an upgrade or breaking down his salary to address other needs

it was awesome because people took turns guarding him and we are able to be very switchable. castle had some great possessions defending him, particularly late. even Harper walled him off several times in the middle of the game, and Fox had his moments making SGA's life hard. the fact that vassell is just another guy who can switch onto him and at least not get torched is a luxury. julian couldnt stay in front of him, but he's never really been a good man to man defender

but that block by vassell on SGA... i dont know if ive ever seen a guard block SGA like that on a middy

You highly mistaken. 10 million is TJ McConnell money.

I think the lingering of Devin hatred is just herd mentality. His career trajectory did take a dip in his post-rookie seasons and he was hurt as well, leading to a dip in efficiency and some defensive frailties. But he never wavered from delivering in big moments and his numbers never fell below mediocre, plus he always showed flashes of what he could be capable of. Now, in a team with set roles and hierarchy, he has started to deliver and live upto the contract that he got based on his potential. He is also an important cog in the Spurs team because of his ability to fearlessly take tough shots and make a reasonable percentage of them. There will be troughs now and then, but those are expected of a shooter. As long as he shoots 3s over 37% and keeps his mid range effective, no should begrudge his shot taking. His off ball defense has generally been good and he was lacking on ball, but this season, he has shown some good abilities on that front too. All I ask for from Devin is consistency now. If his shots aren't falling, he should just keep contributing on defense as he is capable of. That should be fine.

I think a lot of us haters really just hated when he’d try to do more than just shoot. The truth is the same as it was a year ago - if Devin is dribbling, your offense is unhealthy. If Devin is just shooting, he’s going to make a lot of those shots and your offense is likely doing well.

All those criticisms would still hold true today if he wasn’t replaced as an initiator by 4 other guys since he was drafted. Hes proven he can paint by numbers when the coaches a force his hand. Thats a big win.

If I can learn to love Devin, anyone can.

The time has come to leave the hate in the past.
Yeah I can’t muster much negativity about this team at the moment. I have plenty of grievances with the path to get here but this is all going swimmingly.

Okay. I understand now.

DV should be glad the fans expect him to be great and want him to be great. The fact is, to this point in his career, he has not been.

perhaps, but that's an entirely separate discussion.

Also he's the only player in the league that you hope shoots a contested shot lol. Seems like he's 100/100 on those.
The guys who grew up watching Kobe practiced low percentage shots because hitting it once out of four times is better than an assist three times out of four.

In December, he shoots better behind the arc than inside (43.9% vs 32%).
Darn. I didn't realize he was not shooting well inside the arc. I don't know how many shots he's had inside, though. I just hope he keeps improving on defense and finds consistency on offense. If he's locked in on defense and takes what he's given on offense within the flow of the game, he could be a very valuable role player for the Spurs. I'm happy that is looks like he's turning the corner. I won't say he's there yet as he has to show consistency, but I like what he's done so far. Great job turning it around and adapting to a solid role on the team.

Bottom line is Devin has played solid with some games that he has been a huge part of us getting us a W (@Den). His defense has improved and he makes a great fourth option as the record indicates. There is no way he is getting traded this year. San Antonio wants to see what they have with the full lineup this year. God, I hope Wemby stays healthy. Now if something becomes available in the summer, which is too good to be true yeah I can see it. Although, I highly doubt he gets traded during the summer as well, Possibly when his contract coincides with the young kids getting an extension. Positive vibes here….. and was pro – trade as well at one point. Not to mention, I wanted us to trade Keldon last yr, and I would never trade him now.

It makes a huge difference when you have a influx of talent…… GSG!

He is shooting 1.5 for 4.7 inside the arc and 3 for 6.8 from outside but that is just December, in November he was above 50%. I didn’t watch all the games in December but I don’t remember seeing a lot of layups, i.e. high percentage shots. With Castle and Harper attacking the rim, maybe he takes more jumpers.

Real talk

At this point on time, Vassell brings one of the most valuable thing for this roster... shooting. Cherry on the cake for the last couple of months he is bringing more than decent defense. He will have some hot games here and there and some off games but it is part of it and the team has been able to adapt. He has been a 3,5 / 4 so far.

If he plays defense and rebounds, nobody cares if he has a bad shooting night.

the valid criticisms of devin over the last few years has been:

a) he plays an iso heavy game and pounds the air out of the ball, couldnt adjust to become a role player
b) he had gone from being touted as a 3&D guy to a negative defensive presence and a league average shooter (came into the season with a career 37% 3pt average and 80.6% FTs)

so with that, you had something like a less explosive Cam Thomas, which... yeah

but this year...

a) he has clearly bought into a smaller offensive role, but has balanced that with being more aggressive when the situation calls upon him to do so
b) his 3pt% this year so far is 39.7%, while his FT's are up to 87.7%, much more in line with a shooting specialist. his defense has also been noticeably more consistent. even if he's not the lockdown ace defender that we used to think he could be... we dont really need that anymore with Castle's emergence (and potentially Carter Bryant down the line)

unless you think either of the above is a mirage, i dont see the urgency to move on. and its not like he's just doing this in a contract year. are his contract numbers great for us... no, not really. but its certainly not a problem just yet.
