Is our championship window already open?

If yes, what should the front office do to maximize it? (Hint: it isn’t trading away Vassell for picks)
If no, then why not and what should we do to open it?

I may be overreacting to 3 games, but it looks like Wemby is good enough to win a title NOW. We should be going all in to win a chip before we get off these rookie deals. That means trading for talent and immediate help, not for future picks.

Hit me w your thoughts BB fam.

I’d say we’re at the starting stages of the window being opened, but there is still some effort required to push this creaky old window wide open.

That may or may not mean a trade. I’m happy letting things roll as is for now (meaning the next few months). I think there is something to the idea of smaller lineups centered around Wemby. Let’s see how those look against better competition before declaring what the “must address” weaknesses are.

We’re still young as hell, so there is some education that needs to take place on its own.

I want to say yes, mostly because I'm riding on a high believing that both Wemby and Harper can get to the basket at will. I really don't believe that MATFO should do a whole lot at this point as I'm optimistic that the chemistry on this team will come together is a very forceful way, soon. I'm mean I'm in favor of making deals to improve, but I think the possibilities will be much, much bigger as we near the trade deadline.

Patience is a virtue.

you are overreacting ... the team is good enough to reach the playoffs (maybe directly, maybe over the play in) and then learn their lesson with a nice first round exit. thats how it works.

Absolutely it's already open. This year everyone is super cheap on contract. Now's the time to win early. We're playing well without Fox or Sochan or even Olynik. We're missing 2 starters, a backup big, and a backup shooter, and we have the best net rating in the league, and we're 3-0.

If Wemby is a top5 player in the league and it looks like he is, the window is absolutely open because in the end it always comes down to everyone's health and top teams are rarely all healthy.
I said it before, I'd make another significant trade at the deadline if we're better than 30-20 record at that point
There will be a lot of unhappy high end starters in a few months, we just have to wait and see which of them are realistic targets.

It might be cracking open...and by that, I mean it would take a miraculous run with this group to make the WCF this season, let alone go all the way. At least it's not sealed and nailed shut like it has been the past 5+ seasons.

In recent history, we've seen the likes of teams like Phoenix, Dallas, Minnesota, and Miami beat the odds to make runs to the Conference Finals or Finals. Houston was way ahead of schedule last year and added KD.

Realistically, I think we are still a couple years of development and a couple good moves away from being solidly in the "contender" tier, but we can dream for now.

If Castle and Harper can improve their outside shooting…
If Fox can stay healthy…
If Kornett can stay healthy…
If Wemby can stay healthy…
If, If, If, If…
I think that the Spurs could go toe to toe with anyone, but still bow out by the 2nd round.

The window is opening and the main objective is to get better at winning. Plenty to work on before adding pieces. Wemby/Fox/Harper/Castle/Vassell/Kornet/KJ/KO will be a strong team and a tough matchup for many teams. I also think that Harper is the wild card here. If this is the bottom rung of his potential, we might be a step closer to contention. Defensively we are looking much improved and our rotations still suck sometimes, like 3rd & 4th qtr vs Nets. Offensively we look like a young team that hasn't found their efficiency yet. Again, vastly improved from last year. I'm hoping that Fox integrates well with what's working and adds to some things that aren't. If Wemby stays mostly healthy, this window could remain open for a long time.

Sort of a cop out but it's too early. Hypothetically speaking if Wemby really is a top 3 player at this point, and Fox comes back healthy + plays like an all-star caliber guard, and Castle proves he's taking a major step forward this year, and Harper continues to play like he did yesterday...sure, we maybe have a chance. But all of those things being true at the same time seems pretty unlikely and even if they are, I think we still have question marks.

Generally speaking I think it's pretty reactionary to act like we're contenders at this point.

It's like the 1990 team. They could get hot in the playoffs. Maybe a few lucky breaks this time. It's a young team but with a mix of vets. We'll see!

we got Wemby and Fox. If this team is a top 10 on offense and defense by the trade deadline we are a contender and should look for an upgrade at the 4 spot. We probably won't make the finals regardless, due to lack of experience, but the window is absolutely open if you're top 10 on both ends and have a top 5 player paired with an All-Star.

Still way too early though. We might see a dropoff after teams have enough tape on how to defend our team by daring our guards to shoot. We'll see.

Time is now, but no rush on trades unless a good deal is on the table. No need to force anything now or even this year.

They’re….already doing that.

NOLA did it. Fox ain't back. His shooting percentage will matter in this case and will obviously change the entire offense. I know you think within 3 games we might "turn the corner", but it takes a larger sample size than that.

I read "winning" as "winging," the first time, which also works.

I’d say that Wemby is good enough to win it all now and a healthy Fox probably is too. Kornet is good enough in his role.
Is the rest of the roster championship level?

Castle and Harper undoubtedly have the talent, but we don’t know yet if they can elevate and be consistent performers right away with so little experience and seasoning.

Vassell and Keldon look like elite role players so far. If they keep this up all season they’re absolutely good enough.

Champ is fine. Every team needs guys like him.

Unc Barnes is showing his age. He needs to find some gas in the tank. That’s the position (PF) where we are definitely not good enough right now. Sochan could help but he’s so limited. If my answers above are YES, then PF is where I’d be looking to go all in for a winning player.

Probably an overreaction but it's exciting to see the team come out strong and work through mistakes to come out with W's these last two games. Truthfully, I'd like to see how they respond to a loss before I think about a championship window. Moreso, two losses in a row. At some point in the season a team is going to hand them their asses but that's par for the course. I'll be happy to eat my words if that never happens. But if they have the focus they've had these last few games, playoffs here we come!

The only real championship contender to me is OKC right now. They struggled to put away Indiana, but are more seasoned now. So, to me they are the benchmark. Can SAS go toe-to-toe with them in a series? Maybe not yet.

Our roster right now is absolutely talented enough to be a championship team (if everyone is healthy).

I Believe.

As much as I'd like to trade Vassell / Keldon / Sochan for future draft picks, if we are serious about the playoffs then we'll need them for depth.

What we really need is for Mitch to drill it within them to rotate on defense. Wemby is covering for everyone's poor defense and making them look better than they really are.
