Starting power forward ideas in the short and long term

Not sure which thread to ask this in, but what is everyone's expectations for this season as of now? Before the season started, I just wanted to make the playoffs and play a playoff series, but the young guys have sped up/accelerated the timeline, and sort of even expanded it. It may be starting now (contention), or if not now, close to it. Are the Spurs ahead of your expectations?

Right now my new expectations are to try and finish with a top 4 seed and win at least one series of the playoffs, and then see what they can do from there. That would be a very successful season. To do that, though, I think the team is going to need an upgrade. Maybe not a big one, but just a couple of smaller ones could really make a difference to the team winning a series with a chance to go further.

a playoff series win

Herb Jones.
Too small. We already struggle on the glass as is. Need someone with some size who can rebound and defend other bigger 4's. Jones is only 6'7 205 lbs and averages 3.5 Rbs a game... He's a SF. And he's not a good shooter either. He'd also be too expensive anyways imo.

Two iterations of young Spurs teams come to mind. One of them won a single playoff series and then lost when the point guard threw a behind the head pass out of bounds. That team was upset in the playoffs nearly every season for almost a decade.

The other one was super undisciplined, couldn't focus, and couldn't hold a lead. They won a title in a year where they came from behind in almost every series clinching game.

Fuck it. I want six. I'm not afraid to ask for it. This group is special. They know how to win dirty, close games. They love each other like the 13-14 team did. They have the best basketball player I have ever seen in my nearly six decades on this planet.

I believe.

I like Derrick Jones Jr as a possible option. Cheap contract and a Sochan- Jones Jr trade works. Okay shooter but good defender. Currently out due to MCL sprain but back soon.

Another idea that helps the Celtics get below their repeater tax situation is by getting Sam Hauser out of their hands. He is having a down season this year but I think Spurs should take a flier on a career 41% 3P shooter and who comes cheap ($10 million for three years) and a Champs/ Barnes replacement if it comes to it. A trade like this - https://www.espn.com/nba/trademachine?tradeId=2a4ks4dk
By giving up Sochan to the Nets, getting Hauser from the Celtics and Scheirmann to the Nets plus the Jazz second round pick to the Nets (trading Ingram, the 2WP to the Celtics) might work. This way the Spurs get Hauser as the PF backup and who is quite capable and make the scorching Jayden Nunn (in G league) the new 2WP (can they do it this way, cap needs?). The Celtics get below the tax line while the Nets get to take a flier on Sochan in a team with little expectations plus a juicy 2RP in the Jazz one (could be 31-35) in a loaded 2026 draft.

Throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks:

Blazers:
Sochan
Olynyk
Barnes

Spurs:
Grant
RWIII
2028 swap w/ Blazers/Bucks (Spurs get best pick out of the three)

Originally had it as their 2030 swap to add to the Spurs' roulette with Dallas and Minny but realized Grant's contract was shittier than originally thought.

They have had Vassell, Harper, and Castle switch on Jalen Johnson tonight. Does this extra height really matter when today’s NBA will have your guards and wings switch on the forwards we supposedly can’t contain?
Depends on the match up. They‘re not able to guard Randle or Gordon on the low block. I just want enough length at that position as it also helps with steals and deflections

Kornet
Keldon
Castle
Vassell
Harper

Obv Vic would be starting center but I'm frankly so happy with his impact off the bench.

If we finish top 4 and get rockets/lakers in our bracket, I can expect WCF. If we get OKC/Denver, I’d be happy with WCSF.

Before the season started, I rode with Wemby’s goal of top 6 (non-play in).

I see it the same way. Get home court in the first round, win the series and then play a hard fought second round. That‘s good enough for our first rodeo to gain experience

I don’t want the Spurs to give up any of the rotation guys, also don’t want to wait for the draft. I think the Spurs have enough 6’7”/6’8” dudes. A younger guy that’s kinda having a hard time getting PT is Zeke Nnaji. He’s 6’10” and an Arizona kid, so Sean would prolly go bezerk over him. Spurs don’t really need someone that needs a bunch of touches, maybe just need a workman that will eliminate some of these O rebounds that other teams are getting. His contract isn’t overwhelming either.

I wonder if Victor is the offensive PF and defensive C that everyone is thinking about, especially in a 4 out offense, with the upgrade a second string center/forward in Luke's mold: solid rebounder, screener, passer and interior defender.

We'd be better if we had Mamu instead of Sochan, tbh.
Terrible defender, but is rebounding well, plays smart and can shoot the ball.

It’s give and take, IMO. You may find a player who can guard those guys competently, but it’s likely they won’t be good on the perimeter defensively as taller players usually have less mobility. And, in order to get a guy who can do both - you are extremely lucky in free agency, you would pay a high price in trades, or you need a high draft pick.
