Starting power forward ideas in the short and long term

Spurs have enough offensive talent to go with a defensive minded PF in the mold of a Toumani Camara. Even if he still has a long way to go, Carter Bryant might be on the road to become that.

I'm not sold on players like Collins, Hachimura, Wade, Bey or Yabusele being upgrades over what Spurs currently have. Aldama might be too offensive oriented for Spurs' needs. Right now, I'm on team "let's do nothing until the end of the season".

the thing is we got Sochan and Olynyk's expirings on the books right now. If we wait until the offseason there are not contracts for trades left (if you don't trade our 9 main rotation guys) and we'll only have the MLE. So I'd rather make a move until the deadline, even if it's just a small upgrade from Sochan as a bench piece.

I wonder if they'll continue to prioritize a big wing or revert to a true PF. Now that most of the current generation of bigs have adapted and honed perimeter oriented skills, teams are playing bigger lineups again.

I still think they probably prefer a big wing, but I don't see them touching the rotation in season short of a season ending injury. Sochan, Olynyk and maybe 2nd(s) is the most I could envision.

Come the off season, if Fox is traded, I'd expect it addressed through that. If not, how Barnes closes the season probably determines the direction. Finish strong and 2 years at MLE money could be on the table. Look washed and they probably turn to one of the oft mentioned stopgaps.

can trade those two together for John Collins who himself is expiring, though im not sure i'd start him right now

Would be an upgrade, but not really what we are looking for. We got enough offense on the team. I'm hoping for Brian Wright to pull a rabbit out the hat with a move none of us see coming.

Carter Bryant is the long term option. Really just need a bridge year or two... so the anticlimactic answer is to resign Harrison Barnes for a team friendly deal and gradually witness a changing of the guard in 2026 and 2027.

I like how you asked how we would prioritize skills. I'd rather focus on that than naming the same guys over and over... so here is how I would rank those PF skills that you identified.

1. Shooting
2. Rebounding
.
.
.
.
3a. Big wing ISO defense
3b. Perimeter switchability
3c. Passing/connectivity

I want to note, that a 6'10" guy with the first three of these things is likely a max player, which is why I kind of have the first two separate from the rest and I acknowledge that anything else is kind of a bonus skill.

I'm willing to sacrifice on defense and have a Temu Lauri Markkanen at the 4 because I have Wemby and/or Luke behind him to offer rim protection, and I have good perimeter defenders in Castle, and I hope Harper, and Devin seems to be showing some of what we saw early from him. I need this guy to be strong enough to not get bulled over in the paint with just enough quickness to stay in front of our man. Basically, if Keldon was 3 inches taller, he'd be perfect (though I don't love his 3-ball... but it's good enough).
If shooting + rebounding are the 2 overwhelmingly most important qualities, realistically in hierarchy you're probably looking at:

Lauri Markkanen

Healthy Porzingis

Bobby Portis

Santi Aldama

Jalen Smith

Mamu

Wonder if it's worth it to revisit crazy eyes Bobby as a bridge 4. I don't think he's particularly good, and as an overall player he's certainly worse than guys like Aldama and either but he can rebound (Keldon level), shoot (4 3PM/100, 48% so far this season), is on a reasonable contract (3/44), can probably be a backup backup center, and is probably more available than these other players if Milwaukee wants to dump Giannis

At this point I’m not overly hung on shooting as long as the guy is halfway decent. Doesn’t have to be deadeye or anything, just someone who can keep the defense honest.

On offence id rather have someone who can pass and dribble somewhat, like a new age diaw. The spurs have the most success when the ball flies around the court this year and the PF could help bring this to another level.

On defence I agree with the majority. Rebounding but also quick lateral movement for perimeter defense. Again, doesn’t have to be some host level guy, just a good smart defensive player.

Funny enough, I'd value mental attributes that Keldon also has: unafraid to muck it up in the paint and fight for boards against bigger players, and unafraid to take a shot (I can do without Keldon's occasional tunnel vision though). From both a skill and a mental perspective... Keldon is the right kind of guy, he's just too damn short.
KJ is taller than one of the best rebounding forwards ever, 'The Round Mound of Rebound' aka Charles Barkley. Rather have a persistent, unafraid mucker than a 6' 10" nonbanger.

Can we just start feeding Taco Cabana to Keldon Johnson?

They have had Vassell, Harper, and Castle switch on Jalen Johnson tonight. Does this extra height really matter when today’s NBA will have your guards and wings switch on the forwards we supposedly can’t contain?
