Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

Focusing strictly on 3rd String C candidates and backup PF options, here is my list of potential targets, with some rules.

Rule 1: Only focusing on teams without their own playoff aspirations. These teams are not giving up useful talent for SRPs. Thinking we're going to trade for someone like Goga is the same as thinking someone is going to come and be able to make an offer for Kornet. It's not happening.

Rule 2: Only focusing on guys suited for the role of 3rd String C or backup PF. This is why, for example, you won't see Jay Huff (who I've been talking up since the start of the season) on my list. That dude has graduated from a 3rd String C. He's a legit backup C who can fill in a starting role in a pinch (like Kornet) on an absolute steal of a contract. IND is going to want more than he's worth to let him go, and he's not going to be happy being a 3rd String C.

Rule 3: Only looking at guys we could reasonably get for seconds and matching salary. I'm not giving up an FRP for a third string C. Backup PF is more possible, but still unlikely IMO.

So, here are my targets (some of these guys might be hurt and out for the season... I'm not sure since some of them are very fringe):
  • Marvin Bagley III WAS
  • Anthony Gill WAS
  • Jarace Walker IND (this is not to be confused with glazing Walker. He's been a disappointment, but that's what makes him gettable here)
  • Mason Plumlee CHA
  • Patrick Williams CHI (contract is gross)
  • Jalen Smith CHI
  • Zach Collins CHI (only 95% joking... he's actually be a nice 3rd string C option)
  • Taurean Prince MIL
  • Kevon Looney NOP
  • Karlo Matkovic NOP
  • DeAndre Jordan NOP (Pelicans have 5 centers on their roster... weird... Jordan is as washed as Bismack, but I'd imagine slightly better... but only slightly)
  • Robert Williams III POR
  • Duop Reath POR
  • Jusef Nurkic UTA
  • Kevin Love UTA
  • Kyle Anderson UTA
  • Dwight Powell DAL
Honestly... pretty slim pickings. Bagley, Walker, Smith, Matkovic, Timelord interest me most. The others I'd rather just roll with Lunch Lady.

Obviously I'd be interested in Jarace, but for a 3rd C I like plumlee. He's strong enough to get in there and bang when we face more physical front courts.

I bet Sweeney knows exactly who he wants defensively. Might even be players he’s coached in the past. I think a defensive player or two is what they’ll seek at the deadline. We might have enough offensive firepower at this time.

Reath is probably the most interesting name on that list to me if we're talking purely about guys this season who are decent at defending and rebounding.

I don’t know what’s in it for Memphis to do this, but Landale works for me. if they crater he might be gettable for not a lot.

One idea I've heard talked about a little bit:

OKC's dominance is dampening the trade market, as teams realize it is futile to spend your draft capital just to get better and still lose to OKC now.

What prevents me from completely giving up is the two most dreaded words in the NBA right now: Calf strain. Shai getting stricken by the epidemic mid-series and all bets are off.. If you are an East team, for instance Miami given their Championship know-how, i would mortgage the future in for Giannis to become instant favorite to make the Finals and then hope something goes my way after OKC long reg season record chase and playoffs mileage kicks in. Don't think it is the right calculus for an Eastern conference team to just abdicate a path to contention.

wasn't it mentioned multiple times, that the identity and strenghts of this group is speed? so why think about some of the slowest footed center in the league as a trade target, even if they just would be 3rd stringers?

I would like PJ Washington from Dallas not sure how thst would be feasible though nor if worth the price Dallas would ask.
Yabusele if he could be acquired via trade could be another guy also and shouldn't cost much to acquire and would provide minutes off the bench.

That sucks. Spurs just need a bargain power forward that can play the spurs style of defense and hit the occasional open look.

I don't see the spurs making any big moves this year. Trading sochan if any teams see value could be the only reasonable move. That and moving from Olynyk.

Think they stand pat and see where this current roster takes you and tweak in the draft and off season.

PJ is my dream target for PF. If only they extended him earlier so they could trade him at the deadline, which sadly ain't possible.

Yabusele was another option, although Knicks fans say he's totally unplayable.

In the name of thinking about all possibilities, Ryan Dunn is intersting, though he would require parting with a draft asset if Sochan were part of the deal (say, FRP + Sochan for Dunn). OR we could just draft the next Ryan Dunn, next year.

A look at the game logs show that he began the season as a starter, but he lost the gig and is now hovering a little below 20 min/gm, so maybe there's an opportunity to grab him. Dunn is probably one of handful of players I'd be willing to do a moderate overpay for, as he would be brought with the set expectation that he's a long term rotation piece as a 6'8" combo SF/PF, one that could cement the Spurs quest to establish themselves as an elite defensive unit, AND, his 3 point shot is just good enough - and bad enough - to fuel threads in this forum with thousands of takes.

Mid-to-Long term, Spurs could be looking at the following collection of wings: KJ, Barnes, Champ, CB, and Dunn. All possibly key contributors to a lengthy playoff run, but all guys who will probably never rise above MLE-type money, which provides the Spurs FO the depth and roster building flexibility they are going to need ... which is to say that all our future max contracts will be tied up in Wemby and guards, so yeah, we better have some well-developed wings on manageable contracts.

And we still draft our 7-foot project in the next 2nd round.
