What the Spurs need to find are the NAWs and the Barnes of the world. Afterthoughts by every NBA fan, but each with a lot to give.
I'll go a level lower and say that we could use another Champagnie or two. Keep shuffling third stringers until we hit gold.
We might be onto something with DJG.
As I wrote the other day, my moves for the next season would be something like:
1. Decline Champagnie's player option and give him a descending 4 year deal that would get him the same money like he would if we take the option and give him the extension a year later.
2. Offer Barnes a cheaper extension. Effectively pay two of them the same money we're paying now, just shift more of it towards Champ.
3. Find a competent third string big in the second round or free agency. Ideally someone young who can take over from Kornet in a couple of years.
4. Give DJG a similar deal to what Champ got a couple of years ago.
5. If Bryant develops into a legit contributor by the end of the season, we probably don't even need another forward. Ideally take another 3-D guy in the draft, but someone more ready. Or trade the pick away again because we'll need them in the future.
6. Jeremy is a lost cause as of now, just let him go. Maybe he stays on a qualifying offer.
7. If Bryant isn't ready and Jeremy is gone, get a bigger defensive forward for the bench.
If everyone is healthy and keeps developing on current trajectory, our situation is almost ideal. Basically just missing a legit wing for the future if Bryant doesn't develop.
If he does, we're good to go.
