Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

I’ll caveat this by saying I don’t see the Spurs making any trade of significance than other to maybe add a better 3rd string C (I’ve brought up Jay Huff multiple times but he may have played himself into long term backup status for IND at this point) or taking a flyer on a PF prospect. But I definitely can’t see us trading for a proven PF. It will cost too much and be too disruptive for how the Spurs like to operate, IMO (but I could be wrong).

So… fitting that bill I think we need to look at these king of players:

• Vets on contracts larger than their current level of play commands, but are still capable. You want to look for them on teams who need to cut salary or make room for younger players to get playing time. Guys like Barnes and Olynyk. Barnes was an example of the Kings needing to shed the last two years of his deal. If there are guys like that with multiple years (Jerami Grant would actually be a good example if you could put together matching salary in expirings). It’s best to look for these guys on teams that unexpectedly need to blow things up. Maybe they thought they’d be able to compete for the playoffs but now it’s clear they won’t, for whatever reason. POR, LAC, MEM, DAL, MIL(?) might be some good targets to look at
• Guys who will need to get paid so it might be best for the team to monetize them now. IND with Mathurin (who we don’t need) and Walker (who some of us would like to take a chance on) are examples. Eason at HOU would fit this bill, but they are contenders and he’s a part of that, so they’d rather worry about it in the offseason where they’ll still have RFA rights.
• Straight up reclamation projects. Who are the Jeremy Sochan’s on other rosters? Guys who had something to make a team draft them high but have low value right now and need a change of scenery for one last chance to make it in the league. Think of Jalen Smith leaving PHX. The Suns had given up on him but he was decent in IND and now in CHI. Still not up to the potential of a lotto pick, but still a valuable bench player. We need to look for those kind of guys.

Danny Wolf not getting any PT in Brooklyn. If there's a way to convert Sochan into Wolf, I'm here for it. It took two seconds to pull up Nets media article wondering if the Nets made a mistake taking Wolf over Kalkbrenner... probably, but I still think a 7-footer with playmaking skills and an ok 3-point shot could carve out a spot in the Spurs rotation. Would love to have a shot of getting a Markkannen type player on a rookie contract.

Love that. Of that group Por, Memphis, and Dallas look like teams that might have what we'd be interested in. Another slim scenario (yes I'm still trying to figure out how to move Devin), if we can find a team trying to reduce salary next year maybe we could package Olynk and Devin for a contract that goes past next year but expires a year before Devins. Saves them short term money and saves us a little long term money.

doesn't really fit with this team tbh. He would've been a good fit next to 3-point shooting Wemby. He'd still be an upgrade, but I'd rather have a 3-and-D forward next to in the paint Wemby.

Yeah seems like Sochan and Olynyk would the right trade package. It's about 20 million and they could even throw in a Biyombo to make it 23. 3-and-D PF should be the target. Can we fool a GM into Sochan being a valuable top 10 pick?

Aldama's contract is $18.5M this season, $17M in the two following years, with the final one being a team option.
Sochan and Olynyk combine for $20.5M.

I think those two and '26 SAS/ATL FRP would be fair value.
I guess it depends on Spurs scouting department and if they really want someone in that #15-20 range.
We have 3 SRPs and can trade up into late first round to get a third string big.

Grant is a career loser by choice.
Also not what we're looking for.
Averaging less than 4 rebounds for his career despite being 6'9.

If he was on a reasonable contract I'd be fine with it, but 32/34/36 is too much. And he'll be 32 before the end of the season.

the main reason why I brought him up was because Portland surely wants to get off his contract, so we wouldn't have to add any picks and could just get him for a bunch of expirings. He's overpaid, but only for the time of Wemby's rookie deal, so it lines up. The guy played in the playoffs for 4 years straight (3 in OKC, 1 in Denver), so I wouldn't say he's a loser. Him seeking a bigger scoring role while being 25 is not a red flag to me either. That's a business decision at the end of the day.

Last season there was that fight between Aldama and Bane, I guess not an issue anymore, but that entire roster looks like they're fed up with each other.
If they decide to blow it up and reload, Aldama will surely be available.
A lot will happen until the deadline.

There is short term overpaid and long term overpaid and the Spurs should be fine with short term overpaid (for this season and next, IMO).

Devin (though performing well in his role) is long term overpaid and that might make him tough to move unless an opposing GM thinks he can still be unlocked in a bigger role. Barnes is an example of a guy who is probably overpaid, but it's short term (only two years left when we acquired him). Olynyk is another guy who is short term overpaid, but only 1 year left so no big deal. Porzingis is a guy we were allegedly interested in in the offseason, also overpaid... but expiring so again... no big deal.

I don't think Jerami Grant fits this because he has this season, next season and then a player option in the season after than (when Wemby's extension will be in effect). It wouldn't be terrible, but it's not ideal. Ideally we can find a guy who has one year left after this one.

Examples of vets who generally fit this criteria from Teams I'd target, contract wise (though maybe not on the court fit wise). I'm assuming all of these guys will exercise POs where they exist. Not all of these are overpays, but they are deals a team might want to get off of if rebuilding. I didn't look at rosters of contenders because they aren't looking to get off useful players unless getting a better player in return.

• DAL - Klay Thompson ($17MM this season and next)
• MEM - KCP ($21MM this season and next)
• MEM - Aldama ($18MM this season, $17MM next season, $17MM TO the season after that. You covered above why it might tough to get him though)
• MEM - Brandon Clarke ($12.5MM this season and next)
• SAC - Demar ($25MM this season and next)
• SAC - Monk ($19MM this season, $20MM next, $21.5MM PO after that)
• LAC - Nephew ($50MM this season and next). I'm not saying we should go after Nephew... but we probably would be find bringing in $50MM if it rolled off after next year. I'd have to run the numbers, but I recall this being okay when we were looking at Durant scenarios
• CHA - Bridges ($25MM this season, $23MM next). No way we ever tough this guy
• CHA - Grant Williams ($14MM next two seasons)
• CHA - Josh Green ($14MM next two seasons)
• CHI - Jalen Smith ($9MM next two seasons)
• IND - Jarace Walker (next season is the last year of his rookie deal). Just wonder if there is a scenario here where IND thinks they won't want to extend him and would rather just get off that $8.5MM next season to make room for a top 5 picks salary. Would they do Sochan + SRPs for Walker? This would get them off of Walker's money next year and give them some SRPs. They seem to like our SRPs (we've sent them SRPs the last two drafts).
• BKN - MPJ ($40MM this year and next). He's been discussed at length and I don't really like him and I don't think BKN is looking to get off this money. They honestly kind of need it to hit the salary floor and he becomes a very attractive expiring next year when they might actually want to do something.
• MIL - Kuzma ($22MM this year $20MM next). This would be a scenario where MIL completely falls apart but I actually want no part of this guy unless it's a sneaky way to get Ryan Rollins... who we were rumored to have an interest in but I'm don't think we have a place for. No one else on MIL fits the bill.
• GSW - Buddy Hield ($9MM this year, $9.6MM next year, PO for $10MM after that). What if Steph misses extended time and GSW completely craters? Draymond and Kuminga would also be on the block... don't really want any of these guys but Hield would be an interesting shooter at least... but not really.
• UTA - Kyle Anderson ($9.5MM this season and next)
• NOP - Jordan Poole ($32MM/$34MM). Yuck... no reason to take him on our team, even if they were including unprotected FRPs to take him. We're past this stage of our team where we need to do this.
• NOP - Not really this criteria at all... but would they move off Karlo Matkovic for an SRP? Would just be 3rd string C

Slim pickins out there as far as realistic trade targets who fit salary perfectly. There are guys with longer term, reasonable contracts, but I didn't spend a lot of time searching for them. But these are generally the rosters I'd look at. I don't know why anyone else would be selling right now.

Since you mentioned Kuzma, Bucks are probably looking to move him.
They're desperate and know if they don't make a serious run this season, Giannis is probably gone.
Yesterday I saw some reports that they're interested in Lavine, that's how bad things are in Milwaukee right now.
With that said, Spurs would never go for a negative IQ player like Kuzma.

I've brought up Grant, but more so as a replacement for Barnes and means to dump Johnson.

With both playing so well, that no longer makes sense.

Aldama is not worth what it'd take to acquire him and between his below average shooting, limited mobility and rim protection, is more of a good third big than starter.

There are some players on that list that I like here. Going back to Grant though, they only trade i can see I'd do for him is Devin + ballast. I know they probably don't want that, but it's the only thing I'd give up for him... maybe a 3rd team taking Devin could get it done..

I thought he was adequate in limited minutes for the Spurs last year and a great shooter to boot ..so letting him go was a mistake in hindsight.

Yeah, unfortunately, I agree now. I was OK with letting him go due to his lack of defense as I've always been defense first, but really, maybe the Spurs should have given him one more chance to see if the new coaching staff could have helped him there. Corliss and Sean Sweeney might have made a big difference and helped him become a better/passable defender/rebounder (probably not, but it was worth a shot). Should have given him one last opportunity with the new coaching staff . Just his personality alone and what type of guy his is was worth keeping him around for. And seeing how bad Bismack has been, I would have rather that spot gone to Sandro (We do need a better 3rd backup center, though).

If Sochan were the price, I would not hesitate to make the deal. Highly unlikely Sochan could even fetch Wolf at this point, so moot.

If the Bucks blow it up Bobby Portis would make some sense but his defensive metrics have fallen off the face of the earth so far this season so its probably a pass.

I still like the idea of Sochan for Kyle Anderson at the deadline. KA just turned 32 years old and is on a very modest two year deal. Prefect fit at as a backup PF.

Sochan/Olynyk/Bismack plus the Utah second rounder works for our old friend John Collins.
